  1. Thanks Brandon, I always enjoy watching your instructional videos. Nobody likes seizures, I got set on AP while working on HDR's and I use it way too often. I want to try a time lapse of my own, but I don't own that timing gizmo that you used. Is is possible to do with just a DSLR/tripod? I have a Canon 40D. Ps, did you name your dog after your favourite camera maker? Good choice
  2. I recently opened up the cottage in Parry Sound area and I agree this is one of the worst blackfly years I can remember. I was outside putting the dock in for ~2 hours with a bug net and was still amazed at how many blackfly bites I had. Looks like the mosquitoes are in strong, but really who is surprised? I've come to expect this as a necessary part of having a secluded cottage over the years, but for an inexperienced outdoorsman it can be overwhelming. Bug spray, bug nets, long sleeves and gloves. Out on the water the bugs are usually fine.
  3. a fantastic report as always, Mike. Your underwater shots from the DSLR really tempt me to invest in an underwater case. I can't imaging how weird it feels to intentionally dunk a 2000$ camera haha. Great report, great fish, great pics. Glad to see you are healthy as well
  4. Ughh putting the dock in with swarms of blackflies always gives me a nightmare, at least you get SOME relief out on the water with a little breeze.
  5. I agree with with the fly comment, nice report Aaron those are some great pics
  6. I love those underwater shots, thanks for the report!!
  7. Hello OFC! As promised, here is a quick fly report from this morning. I was a little weary of leaving the comfort and safety of the center pin at home and venturing out armed with only a fly rod. Luckily the fishing was great, and the choice payed off in the end. Unfortunately, I was by myself for the whole day, except for a brief visit by a good samaritan , so the pictures aren't the best. The trib I fished was very low, as was expected for this time of year and given our lack of rainfall over the past week or so. Most of the fish were found in only a few deeper pools and under some log jams. A lot of my go-to pools were surprisingly empty, a good indication that the season is quickly coming to a close. I arrived at first light, and it only took a few minutes before I had the first fish on. For the next fish, buddy arrived just as I was fighting it and offered to take a pic. I realized shortly after that my cork was covered in fish slime. Not a pleasant sensation. For these next two, I moved downstream and drifted under a tempting log jam. Somehow I left there with all of my flies. Wish I cleaned my lens first!! Here is a nice release video for my biggest catch of the day. It pretty much sums up how calm and peaceful the day was, except of course for when steelhead were jumping 3-4 feet clear out of the water! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dEr0MkC48eU The gear I used was a Sage VT2 8 Weight rod with a Sage 3880 CF reel with SA 8wt floating steelhead line. I can't stress how much I love Frog Hair as fluorocarbon tippet. I tied 3 lb since the water was so clear and didn't lose a single fish. I took a pic of all of the flies that I used today and labeled it in case anyone is interested. Fly fishing has a steep learning curve, but once you dive it the feeling is like no other. The best baits were single egg patterns, but I got one on a san juan worm as well. I'll also admit to cheating and using roe bags to get at the deeper fish in one or two pools Here's a nice shot of the scenery to go out on, hope you enjoyed this report
  8. Reading all of the misinformation in this thread has made for an entertaining Tuesday night! Keep em coming boys! :rofl2:
  9. An awesome report as always , Mike. I love the underwater shots. Beauty reels as well, I hope to grab an Islander in black for myself as well
  10. Haha I hadn't seen that until now, and it was even better. I love the blank expression that Donald Trump has while everyone rips into him. Here's the best line from Meyers: "Donald Trump owns the Miss USA pagent, which is great for Republicans because it will steamline their search for a Vice President" :rofl2:
  11. I think there are many absent fathers that have been playing hide and seek for a lot longer than 10 years
  12. http://wimp.com/correspondentsdinner/ This was from a few nights ago at the annual White House Correspondents dinner. Basically, Obama addressed his birth certificate, his birth video, and the celebrity apprentice. It's a bit long, but worth the time to watch the full thing, it's hilarious.
  13. I think people take issue with the rules when some are enforced and others are not, or should I say, the rules are enforced for some and not others. I don't want to start a fuss, but there were times when my posts were deleted for violating the rules, and other posts that broke the same rule were allowed to remain for whatever reason. This is something I have talked to other mods with, and it has been settled, but you can't deny there are double standards. One particular post about a idiot joke stands out in my memory. However, as stated by everyone else, if you are not a poo-disturber, you don't need to be anonymous.
  14. With a family, I agree Pog is perfect. It's small enough to let the kids play in the beach area and not worry about waves/boats ect.. We also stayed at Mew one year. I can't remember if it's Mew or Pog, but one of them had one of the nicest sunsets I've ever seen (rivaled by Sauble Beach) Cannisbay is really nice too, but we found that the sites were really close together. If boating/fishing is your thing, I would go for a nice calm site (Pog or Mew) and just take the 10 min drive to Canoe lake (canoe rentals are right there anyway) for fishing.
  15. I've had this debate with my family over the past few weeks. Why does anyone still care about monarchs? I understand that Canada is a dominion of Britain, but really how has the royal family impacted our lives as Canadians other than the occasional, obligatory visit? Maybe it's a generational thing, but I couldn't care less about two strangers getting married.
  16. Everyone has their own beliefs about safety. It's not my place as some random on the internet to pass judgment on the choices you make as a parent. I was riding motorcycles with my brother before I was 8. Just be careful out there and put safety first. I will, however, comment on the etiquette of taking a toddler to a river where other people will be targeting steelhead. It's sort of like taking a baby to a movie. You can't reasonably explain to a baby, "You aren't allowed to cry here, please stop". All you can do is leave the theatre or not bring them in the first place. If I was fishing a pool, and someone showed up with a toddler, I would be pretty upset. Same thing goes for dogs that aren't well trained. I understand you want to share the experience of fishing with your little one, but if it's about the fish, start with a pond. Kids don't care where they see their Dad catch fish. I'm sure your little one would be thrilled to see Dad catch fish from a pond.
  17. LOL you guys are far too responsible! That was epic. I agree, the Freddy Claw was far more lethal than the samurai sword.
  18. Thanks for another awesome day of fishing Dave! Let me know when you want to get out next.
  19. I know a several people that have had to dish out big money to save the life of their family member and pet. It's costly, but I wouldn't think twice if I found myself in their shoes. On a bit of a different note, I hate how some vets hugely inflate the cost of their treatments based on demand. Every year, we wait off buying heartworm pills and other annual treatments in Toronto because it is half the price in Sundridge (and many other rural vets). Even considering the gas both ways (we just wait until we open the cottage), you are still saving 150+. It bugs me how a vet can look you in the eye, say "your beloved animal needs this" and charge an insane markup. I understand every clinic has their own expenses to stay a float, but when does greed become a factor. </rant>
  20. I think this is what he's referring to: Spinning Rods: http://ca.wholesalesports.com/storefront/g.loomis/home/fishing/fresh-saltwater-fishing/spinning-rods/c0-c20-c201-c20102-b100330-p1.html Casting Rods: http://ca.wholesalesports.com/storefront/g.loomis/home/fishing/fresh-saltwater-fishing/casting-rods/c0-c20-c201-c20101-b100330-p1.html It's always nice not having to deal with customs too.
  21. awesome fish and great shots
  22. haha I thought of this as well. That's really interesting. I've never seen such an unexplainable colour pattern.
  23. Aaron, your Niagara reports are always a treat. Fishing like this is on my fishing bucket list for sure. I can never get over the nice turquoise colour of that water. If I didn't know better I'd say you were smashing steelhead in Cuba! Thanks!
  24. Decided to hit a river that I rarely fish anymore and it paid off big time. I was almost certain that I would lose this fish twice under a nasty log jam but both times I managed to pull her out. Likely a PB, with less than a week to go before a major trip on the opener. Decided to really blur the shot since it's a pool that many people often overlook. I know I promised a fly report, so hopefully it will come next week! Cheers, Chris
