  1. We use the chlorine water treatment when we're on backcountry camping trips. Two small bottles, mix the solutions together in a water container and you've got safe drinking water in 15 minutes. You can probably pick it up at a lot of different places, I buy ours at MEC. Mike
  2. Looks like the ingredients of a great meal... St. John is a fun lake to fish. Mike
  3. Talked about this with my geek buddies, the consensus was not to upgrade to VISTA, and to wait until you have to buy a new machine that will have the specs to run it properly (it'll come pre-installed in many cases anyway). Mike
  4. I've been ready for the spring since Jan 1! Bring it on... Mike
  5. Sounds like fun, I've always wanted to visit Cuba. Looking forward to seeing some pics... Mike
  6. Don't know the answer about differences in North American and European fish, but I would be cautious about trying to import species into our waters. We've got a poor track record of knowing what the impact is of these kinds of transplants, whether on purpose (introduction of smallies into trout waters, for example) or by accident (gobies!). Mike
  7. Cool vids, I love watching underwater videos of fish in their natural habitat. Mike
  8. Roger, do you only work Saturdays? I've been to BPS a few times but never on a Saturday, usually during the week if I have reason to be around there or on Sundays... Mike
  9. Sorry to hear about the close call with the pit bull, you should definitely call it in. All dogs are supposed to be licensed, which is a relatively minor thing, but pit bulls are supposed to be muzzled whenever they are in public areas, which is not a minor thing, esp. if it's acting in an aggressive manner. Call the Toronto Animal Services, the number is (416) 338-PAWS (7297). Tell them where you were and describe the dog for them, it may have just gotten loose from one of the residents but they should follow up on this. Mike
  10. Great report & pics. I'd have to agree with douG, you should think about whether you'd like to submit one of your reports to a magazine like Ontario Out Of Doors. Remote locations (at least to us southerners), great scenery, and you tell a good story. Justin Hoffman writes for them regularly, and there are some other folks here who also write for magazines. Mike
  11. I don't know anything about towing a boat (not a boat owner) but I learned a lot from this thread. Thanks guys for the different opinions and information. Mike
  12. Great report, Wayne, sounds like a great weekend. Hope you enjoyed that laker, trout is my favourite fish to eat. Mike
  13. I've fished Kahshe a number of times, there are also pike, smallmouth, and walleye. You might be able to find out more about the species if you find the Guide To Eating Sportfish. Will tell you how clean the water is if you want to keep fish but will also tell you what species are present. Mike
  14. Congrats, one step at a time. Think about all the money you are saving without buying those one or two packs an outing, save it up and spend it on something fishing related, whether it's a new rod & reel, more tackle, or a guided trip you might not have taken otherwise. Keep it up, Mike
  15. Very sorry to hear the news... Mike
  16. Very good advice (as you'd expect from a retired firefighter), we change the batteries in spring & fall with the clock change, and we also have two CO detectors, one on each floor. Mike
  17. Congrats, that's a heckuva prize (must have been a good contest!). Heard great things about Beauchene, hope you have a good time. Mike
  18. Global warming doesn't mean we'll always get warmer weather... The average temperature has been going up but one of the bigger concerns is major weather disruption. Some places will go through droughts while other places will get torrential rains leading to mudslides & flooding. Nastier storms when they do happen. It was plenty cold for my morning walk with the dog! He didn't seem that keen on being out for long, even with his fleece coat. Mike
  19. My wife likes to fish, but not for a long time and she gets bored if she's not catching. Here's a pic from last week in Florida, her first saltwater fish, a jack crevalle. Gave her a really nice fight, and it was exciting to watch because the water was boiling from what was probably a school of jacks busting bait right in front of the dock where we were casting from... Mike
  20. Sounds like a great trip! Great pics too, esp. seeing open water & bass at this time of year. Also liked seeing the border marker, never seen one before. Mike
  21. That's great. I would be really upset if we lost our dog and would hope somebody who found him would call the number on his tag, or check to see if he's micro-chipped (he is). Mike
  22. Hi Dave, Glad you got out, I'm still up for an ice-fishing outing with you, just let me know when & where. Mike
  23. Count me in! Mike
  24. I keep my plastics in a couple of Plano boxes, along with a box of jigheads in various sizes & colours. Mike
  25. Good advice about forcing yourself to stick with a lure. One of the things I've found is that I'll rely on the lures I have the most confidence in, esp. on a new lake, so I don't put in the time to get used to a new lure. Head out one day with just some crankbaits, no spinnerbaits or spoons, and keep at it. I'm sure you'll hook up. mike
