  1. green is visible fairly deep in the water column, which explains why it's such a good colour, here's a graph and a link, soon as I read up on colour absorption I think it explained why black/purple is my fav colour to pull on lake O 1/2 oz jig with a white tube or grub is a must for me, if I can't get them downriggin soon as I mark baitfish or big arch's on the screen i'll pull the riggers up and jig http://www.educatedangler.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=921
  2. WOW your video's make me miss fishing back home, beauty fish, cool video's too, gopro's are something else, but I find they work best in optimal conditions (obviously lol)..I never get good footage when I drag mine out, early morning or tends to be foggy/raining/crappy weather in general that net isn't causing those musky any more stress than a set of 7/0 trebles and 100 lb braid ripping them to the boat...you guys got the fish in the net and subdued before you attempted to land/bring them in the boat, no sticks involved and not thrashing around on the ground...that net is only causing the anglers more stress...I bet if you do lose a 50+ from a sketchy net job it'll be your last time on the water with that net!! great post
  3. I like it, better than the xl IMO less stretch than xl and much better handling than xt...I like it for bottom bouncing winter steelhead when it's too freezing cold for braids
  4. the manager's name I dealt with a few times was Pavo..but doubt he's still there, been a few years I guess you could question ethics here, but just say the rod is less than a year old
  5. thanks for all the feedback....i tried electrical contact spray and still had to replace the relay, they were fairly cheap so I bought a backup set to keep in the boat it was a sad weekend for my boat...bad relay and I found a leak in my transom, right below the motor mount into the wood in the transom...it's amazing how much a little hole can take in per hour....cleaned it, sanded a bit and some 5200....bone dry again
  6. the customer service desk in vaughan lacks any shred of customer service skills in my experience...go to the fishing counter and ask for the manager, i've exchanged 2 broken rods without a receipt
  7. hmmm, jumping straight to mining activity is a pretty big speculation....approx 24 dead ciscoes on a large body of water during the middle of summer? sounds more like summer kill to me, although this typically impacts warm water fish in shallow water with large amounts of vegetation, summer kill also impacts cold water fish, like lake trout and ciscoes, as they require both oxygenated and cold water...when they seek the depths of the lake for cold water there is less dissolved oxygen content when there are hundreds and thousands of fish kills, not just a few isolated cold water fish, then it's a bit more reasonable to look at other factors any storms up there lately? I've witnessed what a lightning strike can do, less common though
  8. "Anglers will need to commit to the adjustments they make since it is not possible to change the brakeweight settings on the fly without a quick access sideplate. The benefit of this design is the solid feel we experienced earlier as well as extra protection from corrosion for the spool bearings as well as the frame. " http://www.tackletour.com/reviewicast2012calcuttapg2.html I have a 401 that I've used equally downrigging or jigging in salt, bottom bouncing/drifting tidal waters, trolling and casting for pike and musky...corrosion has never been an issue, just rinse in fresh water and dry with a towel, clean it completely after being submerged in salt the review of the drag somewhat alleviates the idea that it's hard to adjust if only they just sealed the quick access side plate, then they'd really have perfection
  9. I'd splurge on the 300 yd spool, if you're concerned about tying a leader and having extra knots to fail, then why have a knot between you and the salmon when it's got a 100 yds of line out on you? I've never had a fish come close to spooling a 4000 series spool on me, and the spoolings I have witnessed were IMO wrong gear and not enough capacity or cause they let them happen, laughing and hollering with a loose drag lol...tighten the drag and put side control, make that pig work for it I use about a 4-6' leader of 20/25 lb big game just for extra abrasion strength when you're close to landing him, bumps some zebra mussels, touches the pier, garbage debris that i always tend to find, etc...I don't trust 15 lb braid around sharp stuff I tie a 12 turn improved albright that has never failed for me and passes easily through the guides....ball bearing snap swivel to change spoons easy
  10. does anybody here own the calcutta D? it looks like you need a screwdriver to open the sideplate to adjust the brakes? that would be the deal breaker for me they could've moved the handle inward and kept a traditional star drag, that new drag doesn't look like it would be as easy to adjust with cold fingers and gloves did they finally detent the spool tension knob like it is on the conquest? I'll buy a few more TE's that are locally in stock before I get the new model
  11. failing all else you could try the wavespin lol http://www.wavespinreel.com/
  12. 30 lb might be too heavy for a 1000/2500 size reel, not sure what size reel you're using...but nothing wrong with using 30 on a 4000 size or larger as everybody else mentioned, close bail manually and pull line tight helps, becomes second nature after a day or two the biggest thing to help is to change the line lay on your spool...most every reel comes with extra spool washers, add one or two washers so you get a forward taper in your line profile...will help to eliminate tangles and add a few feet to your cast
  13. learn something every day, thanks ..I had thought about that but figured cutting through chop takes more power than on flat water, or I guess that concept only applies to paddling lol
  14. boat load, water conditions, wind, temperature have all been relatively the same....boat load unchanged, exact same in the boat every trip....weather has been stable, maybe a few degrees difference but not drastic....it seems like every trip i drop a tiny bit of mph a month ago i could hit low 40 no problem in chop, last night on glass i was only just breaking 35 not a speed demon by any means, just making sure there's not another problem
  15. I'm looking at a cover from these guys right now myself...considering a custom fit with the travel tuff material...it sounds like installing snaps on the gunnels is worth the effort compared to bungees?
  16. Thanks for that reply, very interesting, I'm experiencing a similar thing right now...local shell is closed for reno's and paving the lot, I try to run shell 91 or chevron 91 and top speed is 41-43 on gps and dash guage past few weeks(3 tanks @ 20 gallons) i've been running gas with ethanol, my top speed has dropped to 36/37...would 3 tanks of ethanol cause that result? I'll be buying some seafoam regardless now
  17. do you have the ipilot? i've heard it can only read the gps from hummingbird products?
  18. thanks for the help, bad relay it was had a heck of a time trying to follow the wiring from the pump, tried googling and youtube, "they're here and there, behind a cover you need to unscrew, behind the starter, etc, etc"....and then I just stepped back and actually looked at my outboard...and voila, there they were!! way to make some extremely more difficult than it should be in case anybody else goes through this with an omc o/b, here's where they were on my '97 90, I highlighted them in red now I just need to order a new relay on tuesday, anybody recommend an online place with fast shipping?
  19. I have a 1997 90 Johnson, yesterday I was drifting with the sock out and came into some shallow water, sand bottom, I touched bottom but not very hard at all, drifting at maybe 0.5 from a weed flat into sand I trimmed up and started the motor, got out of the shallow water and it wouldn't trim down? I made the mistake of trimming full up, so now my motor is locked up at max trim...it was a long putt back to the dock with the little honda 8 lol whether using the trim on the remote or on the port side of the outboard i can hear the pump running when I press trim up when i press trim down it is dead silence, nothing is happening I really don't think running into shallow sand damaged anything because I was drifting so slow....from some reading i've read so far I think it's an electrical issue, otherwise I would hear the solenoid clicking??? the pump isn't getting any current? I'm far from a mechanic but can figure most stuff out, hoping somebody can point me in the right direction it's on a 17' lund vhull, have had the boat 6 months now, first issue, the owners manual didn't give any info on how to trouble shoot trim problems...the boat is used 50/50 fresh and salt water...so I'm thinking corrosion on a wire somewhere? on the plus side the pike fising was on fire, caught a chunky 39" on the first cast....thanks for any advice.
  20. MTO handbook says "don't change lanes in or near an intersection"...I think the correct answer on the test is 30 m trucker was probably into the process, but you're still not at fault IMO...if you went to the collision reporting centre i think they'd take side with you...take pics of the intersection and your truck debris on the road, measure the distance from the corner to the debris (probably too late now)
  21. I think there's a need for some type of system to educate some of the morons on the water/new boaters...as for the effectiveness of the testing, whole other story there when the program was first implemented there was no central registry, to my understanding there now is...go to the boat smart website and email/call them i took the test the first year it was introduced and recently lost my card, it was painless to get a new one, 5 mins on the phone, $30 for 3 cards, at my door inside of 2 weeks...last time i replace my drivers licence it cost $15 for 1 card they will email you a temporary licence to print off, good for 60 days while fishing i've never been asked to show the card, only to look at any fish we kept and make sure there was no booze every time wake boarding or jet skiing they've asked to see it....

  23. there's a distributor/warranty centre in north bay if I remember correctly, should be able to find it with a google search pretty easily...i have it buried in my emails somewhere if you have trouble finding it
  24. geeze, lots of biologists around here I have personally witnessed pike grab my walleye on the stringer, head shake like crazy, keep the walleye in its mouth and roll, ripping the walleye's jaw open and swimming away perhaps not an alligator death roll so the biologists can call it whatever you want, it didn't give up the walleye and rolled (white belly upside down in the water) and thrashed around until he got my fish you've never had a musky leave a puncture wound on a fish???
