  1. You poor man. Early morning you walk out the hotel door and there is a stocked pond just stacked with C & R piggies. The grounds keepers become your private cheering section as you pound the banks. They have bass charters out of 3 different locations. They will provide everything. They even have a 2 hour kids session at Ft Wilderness. They also have pontoon boats to rent. I've fished at New Orleans, Ft. Wilderness, Pop Century and Disney downtown. On my last trip down we took my mother along. She had never been to Disney. We booked a 1/2 day charter of spinnerbait and shinner fishing. What a hoot. I went fishing every morning before breakfast. I go nowhere if there is no fishing!
  2. I've been to Florida a few times to get some bass fishing down in Kissimee in January and February. Feels kinda strange to walk out of your hotel in the heart of Orlando and start catching bass and bream. I think the City of Orlando had 30 stocked lakes in the city last time I checked. I've fished in Disney as well. What a hoot. I could like that kind of G2G.
  3. The pics in the cutting room sure do bring back memories of the Soo TJ. There would be 5-6 of us carving, cutting and blending and stuffing 200lb. lbs of sausage. All done while washing down a couple of gallons of homemade wine. Me being the new member of the party got to dig in and mix the sausage blend by hand. Right up to my elbows. Had to blend in a little bit of pork so the sausage didn't get too dry. Half would go in the freezer, the other half packed in oil to become cured dry sausage.
  4. Fishing season never ends. Just get to save a lot of coin putting fish on ice.
  5. That would be a tough situation to be in. You're caught between the rock and the hard place. If you call the MNR to have his license and PAL revoked, he may hate you the rest of his days. If you don't someone will eventually get hurt. I realize you don't hunt but maybe you can get a hold of some of his hunting partners and feel them out? Or is he a lone hunter?
  6. The kinda boat one could really use fishing them rocky lakes up north
  7. Bugs the heck out of me every time the son does it. Maybe he does it to spook the follower on my lure? All you hear is WHACK! fish gone.
  8. I'm sure that if you can include dad in all the other parts of the hunt other than shooting, and given a camera for spotting, he won't mind too much. Remember, you are asking him to give up a part of a way of life he always knew and cherished. Nobody, young or old , likes to be left behind. I know old timers who go up to the camps even though they don't hunt and hardly fish anymore. One of my friends brings his 85 year old dad to the fishing camp and it takes 3 to get him safely in the boat. So what! IT WOULD NOT BE RIGHT TO LEAVE HIM BEHIND. My uncle is 74 and is trapped in a body that requires leg braces for simple mobility. He can't go fishing by himself in a boat or onshore. We move heaven and earth to ensure he comes out fishing for as much as he likes. I'm certain, from the nature of your post that you love your father dearly. Despite his age and health try and find a way to help him realize a sad truth and still maintain his dignity. Get him out fishing more? You will both feel a lot better about it in the long run.
  9. Looks like a right respectable hunt, and you obviously have a solid hunting party that works well. I may have given up hunting several years back, but I still appreciate a good hunting report or story. Still get a hankering for bear, moose and venison too. That young lad will never forget the exact details of his first kill. WTG
  10. Yes the police have their regular blitzes every few months, RIDE, etc... But take a good look at the number of individuals who are charged after the accident. Also take a look at the number of people who, despite getting caught are still in posession of their licences. As for those who regularly drink and drive, they don't drive along the usual routes where we all know the spotchecks will be. If you take a look at FNA's list of rarely enforced HTA offences, you should notice that the sheer volume is beyond the scope of the police even if you doubled their numbers. A lot of the charges are incurred as a result of an accident. One simple case in point. (I got to see these all the time when I worked in hospital admin). A co-worker at our facility was brought in as a trauma case during a typical long weekend having sustained critical life threatening injuries in an accident. After investigation, they could tell from the skid patch and damage to the vehicle that he was doing 60 over the limit. They could tell from the distance he travelled through the windshield into a field, that he did not wear a seatbelt. He was not caught in the act, and their was no active enforcement. Accident or injury were not prevented. He was charged, and punished after the fact for speeding, no seatbelt, and the biggies, reckless driving, criminal negligence causing death. Not that those charges would matter to a paraplegic. Nor is it likely anyone will successfully sue a cripple for wrongful death when his insurance was declared null and void. The point being made, enforcement with punishment should be proactive to prevent such grisly little stories. regretably, all too often, the punishment is applied as a reaction and consequence of such unfortunate events. You need to take a closer look at the score card, not just the final total.
  11. Odds are a ban on cell use will be difficult to physically enforce. Same with drinking or seatbelts. You will eventually get 80-85% voluntary compliance. Your vehicle insurance is only valid while you are complying with the law. So if you have an accident while breaking the law, your insurance is null and void. Its a standard clause in almost every policy. We comply because we have something at stake to lose. We have families, homes and careers. Things that matter personally. How much would you lose if your insurance did not cover an accident? That portion that doesn't comply do not understand personal consequence. Young, single, no ties, money to burn, egocentric, don't care. Whatever the excuse you pick, that is the portion the police have to target, and most will slip through the net. No different than DUI's, or highway racers doing 180+, or the thousands that drive our highways without insurance .
  12. A knot, or nautical mile, is not the same as a measured mile but is appx 10% greater than a land mile. If travelling 30 knots the = roughly 33mph. On shipboard, speed was never expressed in knots beyond an estimate. Engine speed was gauged strictly by rpms.
  13. Why would I need to mask my scent fishing. FIngers almost always have a layer of worm s--- on them, or the smell of food, or fish or slime. OF course it helps it you lather up with plain soap instead of them scented girly soaps. Then there are the young fellas who wear so much aftershave they smell like a cathouse on a Saturday night. You are either fishin, or trolling for a different kinda trout, but you can't do both.
  14. There are thousands of turkeys in Scarberia. They mostly originate from the darkest depths of Agincourt. Best place to witness the mating ritual; Scarborough Town Centre. Best place to hunt down the male of the species; Brim & Eg Beer Store.
  15. Here's the wee thing all tuckered out and staying close to the mama dog. All the tackle has now been put away, and boxed. no bare hooks.
  16. I've experienced a Southern winter in Georgia. Everybody bundled up in winter parkas and toques. Me, i"m walking down the street in shorts and a tee Almost cold enough for trousers.
  17. Ever since Children's Aid took away my baseball bat, "told ya so" just doesn't seem to sink in quite the same way
  18. Danged Jacks'll hump just about anything, live or dead. Too funny.
  19. That one fish would still make the trip worthy.
  20. We did the Emerg vet years back with another cat on a weekend. What was obscene was the lodging fees charged. $75 per 6 hour shift, and when we opted to take the cat home they threatened to call in the Humane society. I don't care about all the fees to look after our pets when they are sick, but $300 a day for boarding per day? Our vet called them up and straightened them out. Actually Hugh, our vet, is what the old timers refer to as a "good ole fashioned horse doctor". He cares about the animals in his charge. No bull, no nonsense. A real country vet.
  21. Actually, the vet and I have known each other 12 years now. His boys spent a few years with me in cubs and scouts. He just never gets out fishing anymore. Besides, whats a perch dinner or two between friends.
  22. Haarlem's fine. Somewhat groggy and very skittish, but she'll be fine. The wife will survive as well (drats). She got clawed up a lot worse than me when I was busting off the lure. I do not want to do that again. I would have never gotten the hook out of the kitten's face. Went in through the lip and up into the nostril. I kinda like Blaque's idea of giving someone a custom nose piercing. I just gotta shake my head. The son is an adult. Not some young boy who has still to learn about common sense.
  23. I don't know how many of you are pet owners and animal lovers. We currently have 2 dogs and a kitten. For years I have always been worried about one of the dogs getting hooked or snagged. Always ragging on the son to put his tackle away Well the young kitten got into the son's stack of rods and got stuck on a rattling bait, a Frenzy, that he left tied on. I knew nothing til the one dog came upstairs whining and talking and kept running to the stairs. There was the kitten caught up in the rods and lines with one treble through the lip and one in the paw, as frantic as all can be. Took a few minute to untangle her from the rods and cut the lure off the line while holding her firmly so as to not hook herself or me any further and busted the treble off the lure. Down to the vet to sedate the cat and punch the barbs through without the cat suffering any further. The cat will be fine. I just have to pay off the vet with some fillets in trade. Don't know why my son chose to ignore my warnings. He had a dog that chased baits all the time. I'm sure I will calm down later, but his lures will be put away or his St Croix rods will be out on the stret
  24. I guess it would depend on how tough things get. I don't think it will change too much. Simply put, modern Canadians have gotten too used to supermarket conveniences. As an example, I went to an annual fishing camp in the spring on Nippissing. We decided that every body should do all their own filleting rather than dumping it on 3 of us. Now there are 40 guys there. At the fish fry us fish carvers were smart enough to keep our fillets separate. Let the other guys spit out bones How many people actually know how to carve meat off a quarter? Those skills are lost to most people. So I don't see the catch ratios getting too high.
