I did a little exploratory work to check out a couple lakes. Here's the tools of the trade My main destination lake, the trail deteriorated quickly, I thought this is good, not a lot of people getting in, got too nasty with too many blow downs, and I had to turn back there was more of this than any signs of people I mentioned to the owner of the local bait store that I had tried to get to this lake, he said "oh yeah, great brookie fishing eh?" -I couldn't make it, how did you guys get in? "we went in from, uh, well, I can't remember" (I don't blame him at all) "there's a big grow-op in there too, you could easily get shot or killed sniffing around there, been there for years" I guess I'll try again in the winter on the sled damn walleye! here's my Dad in his element we used to fish here a lot, 25+ years ago, a lot of great memories, things have changed since then, more pressure and far less angler etiquette a laker on the spoon

I don't know the rational either, but I totally believe in lunar cycles, but mostly for walleye when fishing dusk and after dark I remember when I had an aquarium with 3 bull heads in there, most of the time they would sit still, side by side, under a rock, but sometimes they all would be swimming all over the tank for short periods, I believe when they did this it would correspond to when the fish would be biting, and the animals at the zoo would be super active, and the dragon flies would be all over the place etc..

I also believe deeper water species (lakers) respond differently to weather and pressure changes than warm water species I can remember a few times, when the weather was changing from a clear, stable weather system, with a nasty storm looming, and the fish just went bananas, as if any fish that could find the bait would desperately take it, I believe it's the change in pressure not the clouding over of the sky, you can feel it yourself when a big storm is approaching

my GPS hunt and fish activity meter, says tomorrow (Thursday) is an excellent day in Haliburton I know where I'll be when the sun is setting tomorrow

very cool, it's fun watching a game down there, walking in with shorts and flip-flops I saw the Leafs down there a few years ago, it was a blast, blue and white sweaters out-numbered the black and white sweaters

I remember touring around the Yukon, it's all white spruce, at the campsites there was free firewood (spruce), I thought it was pretty interesting that the wood doesn't take long to season up there because of the dry climate, thanks Drifter, you must be loosing a lot of daylight up there, it's a magical part of the world though, I want to go back -
I'm not really a tackle head or tons of fishing gear guy, but for a bait caster, I would say spend a little more now, you will have it forever, it will work great, no let downs I went through a muskie phase for a couple years, this labour day weekend, I went to the French and did a little targeting of muskies, pulled out my Calcutta 400, what a sweet machine, it will be around and working great long after I'm 6 feet under I also used a Curado for a couple years, for muskie, casting heavy line and heavy baits, it's not ideal but worked fine, the reel is still fine after all that abuse I'm a Shimano fan

thanks Knuguy it's funny how ads for firewood racks and furnaces are popping up above my post, smart advertising, except they don't realize, as I might have said before, I'm cheaper than dirt -

sweet, thanks grizz -
a trust everyone's opinion here, more than internet searches, that's why I would post a stupid NF question like this I've had my cottage for only 4 winters, I know some of you guys have burned wood for dozens of years I've got a lot of Red and White Pine, cut, split and dried, from the wind burst storm in July in Haliburton. Is it ok to burn in my wood stove? I've heard no, the creosote is dangerous and may cause a chimney fire, and I've heard it's fine, only White Birch is to be avoided any input would be appreciated

for the record, I don't mind tax dollars being spent on something like this, I think it's a step in the right direction even though we've already taken too many steps in the wrong direction a sturgeon story- French River, 15 years ago I can still picture my buddy, in another boat, fishing walleye, in the evening, gets a bite, sets the hook, the fish stays deep and pulls, he goes "oh yeahhhh" 2 hours later, and almost a half km down river, we can't pull the fish enough to tire it, he tightens the drag and says "I don't know what else to do" and leans on the fish, the hook straightens out, we never saw the beast I can remember being in a bay, a little after dark, French River, what I assume was a sturgeon jumping, sounded like a cow jumping off a cliff and hitting the water, scared the hell out of me

I've got some pretty good memories from launching at Queenston, perch weren't involved though

yeah, I hear ya, they're heavy and hard to carry though the racing canoe caught my eye because it weighs 20 to 25lbs, perfect for bushwacking into lakes that don't have portages -

yeah, it's brutal, I only go for a paddle when the weather and water are warm, and I'm in my bathing suit exactly!, when I get around to it, that seat is gone, and a yoke goes in -
a 16', Souris River Prospector, in ultra light Kevlar, it weighs a claimed 42 lbs we bought it used from the Portage Store, it's pretty beat up, that's fine because it's going to get even more beatings from it's new owner on the topic of canoes, I bought this cheap off Kijiji a few years ago, and hope to convert it into a light, back lake portage boat, I haven't got around to it yet it's some kind of racing canoe, with the high seat/ center of gravity, it's as tippy as hell, paddles fast though
