Well today had book the day off because of the mild temps but most importantly was looking forward to hitting my favorite lake for eyes Unfortunately for me the eyes were no where to be seen but managed to land my first fish of 2010 The day started on a positive note when I looked at the thermometer from my kitchen window..... it read 0C Left home at 6:30am and got to destination at 7:30am.... not a soul out on the lake so proceeded to drilling 4 holes to start with. Had 3 set lines rigged with #3 Octopus hooks tipped with dead minnows and a jigging rod rigged with a Buck shot spoon tipped with a minnow head. Ice was good with 10" of black ice, no wind and over cast. Had steady action on one set line but could not get any fish to commit A couple hours went by before I was able to ice this big brute on the jigging rod and boy, was I ever happy to finally see it on the ice..... the battle lasted a fraction of a second, check it out After that got a few hit and miss and at 1:00pm called it a day. Got back home around 2:30pm. All in all was a great time spent on the hard stuff and looking forward to do it again Hope you enjoy Leechman

Since I could not access the site Sunday and Monday decided to hit to work shop and create an oversize crank bait with rattles from the scrap pieces of pine I have.... Had to find 4 pieces of equal thickness for this project and it was a long process in the making Once I found them, began putting it together...... here are the pieces that I worked with Glued them together in pairs..... after carefully measuring and marking the outline proceeded on the band saw.... once that was done, drilled two holes on each halves for the rattles..... here's the result Glued those two halves together and here's the result Started molding the piece with the dremmel.... couple of pics.... Light sanding.... Now at this point the piece was not completely round so I had to improvise.... here's what I did Some more sanding and was able to add the eyelets.... couple of pics.... result Now I was able to proceed to the next step..... painting First coat of white Then applied the color pattern Finish product..... a few pics!!! Along side the 3" ones to give you perspective Hope you enjoy!!! Leechman

8" augers vs 6" you ask??? a little more efforts drilling with an 8" is all that I found out. I used to have an 8" and everytime I used it, cursed it.... Last year bought a Sub Zero 6" and it's so much easier and very happy with it. Like mentioned in other replies..... don't knock the blades or use excessive force while drilling..... that will prevent from damaging them. As far as tipups goes well I make my own from pine cause up here in QC we are allowed 5 lines per person and it would be too expensive if I bought them. Mine are rigged with plastic spools and have 10 adjustable holes so that I can set them very light or very heavy depending on the species of fish I'm targetting Here's a few pics, first the adjustable holes Plastic reels Different designs Leechman
