I just placed an order with Outlet Bait and Tackle for a sale they are offering (www.outletbaitandtackle.com ). Up to 70% off on some really good stuff. Salmon and Steelies will be in soon and I like backbouncing so I grabbed Hot Shots and Kwikfish ($2.00 each after discount) as well as some Chatterbaits and plastics. There's lots of stuff but you have to be careful re shipping to Canada. I wanted to get jigs and spoons BUT to get USPS Ground shipping you have to limit yourself to 4lb. or under. My total order is about $85 for about 39 pieces and the shipping is $17. There will be tax and Canada Post brokerage (usually it's $5) but the transport costs vs the cost of goods is reasonable IMO. They are also offering a $6.95 alternative discount to those outside of the USA in lieu of free shipping so that came of the top as well. Once you get into priority mail or courier the shipping costs get way out of line with this firm IMO (Priority Mail was $40+for my order). This is my first order from these guys and I have not received it yet but I have seen posts from others here saying they are ok. Please post if you feel differently and I will let you guys know how the transaction went from my end. Don't know when the sale ends as yesterday they claimed it was the last day but I just put in my order (I could not get it processed yesterday for some computer reason that eludes me).

If thew object is too save bite offs from small Pike I use 30# saltwater hard mono leader. I use the stuff from Ande since it's good as well as cheap. 30# is still a small enough diameter so as not to ruin the action of most lures used for Bass or Pike. It almost never gets bitten off but I would go much higher in line diameter/lb. test strength if Muskies or large pike were involved

They are very tasty apparently. The Potomac is not loaded with them but they are there to be caught. They actually have a decent fight to them and many anglers like catching them, except for the teeth. A nuisance for Bass anglers similar to hammer handles here.

Nipissing Walleye fishery in 'crisis': OFAH
Snidley replied to kickingfrog's topic in General Discussion
Steve makes a great point. Why don't they break out the shotguns and salvage 100kg of walleye and walleye forage. If they get good at it I know some other spots they can address as well. -
Funny thing about Sheepies and attitudes about them. In Louisiana guys enthusiastically seek Red and Black Drum and they are essentially sheepies, especially Black Drum which look identical. In Australia they target what they call Jewfish (not Goliath Groupers) and they also are dead ringers for Sheepies. I get them locally to about 14lb. and I not only do they fight really well at that size I look so forward to catching them that I have a specific set of lures that will max out a day fishing for them. I have eaten fresh water Drum and they taste much like an ocean fish BUT they rank very high on the contamination scale, much like the Salmon, Steelhead and Lakers found locally. Only retards would eat them from around here risking cancer for a feed of local fish. Killing them for another made up reason is not only illegal but also a further example of how stupid some people really are.

100.000 Walleye Stocked in Hamilton Harbor
Snidley replied to Fish Farmer's topic in General Discussion
Bravo Capt Hooked. It should be obvious to all but either limiting catches substantially or stocking to make up for the mortality of kept fish are the only way to maintain a good fishery. Unfortunately the MNR seems to think that a hands off approach to stocking and law enforcement will work and , like virtually everything government, they are wrong, wrong wrong. -
That Cdn Tire paint is UV paint which is different than glow paint. UV paint is invisible to our eyes but visable to fish and other creatures. We can see glow paint and it applies to nightime fishing or fishing in stained water, or really deep I would think.
-
I have not used Blue Fox glow in the dark spinners but I have used Mepps glow spinners and they worked at the Notty. The Mepps glow paint is not bright, just a subtle glow that makes them slightly more visible. The fish species that respond best to Glow paint are Salmon and trout. Personally it's glow spoons that really perform for me and the fish species that likes them best are staging Chinnooks in the lake. I have had good success with commercially produced glow in the dark Hot Shots, Lymans, Kwikfish, and Hot-n-Tots, all for Chinnies. My best glow in the dark producer though is a glow in the dark J-13 painted with glow in the dark paint (on the bottom of the lure) by me.

I learned the Grand from a buddy who grew up beside Simms locks. The walleye's tend to hold in holes that are really just depressions in the river but deeper than the water around them all the same. They are a morning bite as well as temperature sensitive (it's too hot right now). Usually small, shallow running baits are the key to hookups even in the dirty water of the Grand. My best walleye bait is a shallow Shad Rap in pearl with red eyes (sort of a custom paint job I did). I don't fish it but below the Dunnville dam is also a noted walleye spot but you have to share with lots of boaters.
-
I fish the Grand all the time south of Caldonia (but not as far up as the dam). It is an excellent spot for Walleye, Smallies, Sheepies, Pike, Gars and even Moonies. To do well you need a shallow running boat of some sort (I use a Hobie pontoon boat). Up around Bantford or Paris it's also really beautiful but the fish are really scattered so hooking up is sporadic. Below Caldonia and above Dunnville the fish are much more concentrated so the actual fishing is better..

I vote Sea Eagle Fold Cat http://www.seaeagle.com/FoldCat.aspx. Rolls up into your trunk plus I've seen one in person and they are very well made (unlike most inflatables). I've also seen something lately that bears investigation for kayaks. Personally I don't like canoes or kayaks for fishing because the seated position is not optimal for casting. They are great if you like to troll but casting is just not that great from a canoe or kayak. Now Scotty downriggers has come up with stabilizers that attach to a kayak so that you can stand up and cast or flip. If they are good quality that could be a real find and you should look at the option if you are considering a Yak.

I find these types of post amusing in a pathetic sort of way. Many of the same guys that find this act of wasting 3 small Bass a shameful travesty that should be harshly punished, and they are right of course, would consider retaining the biggest of big Kings(or 5) for "the Derby" to be righteous harvest in a lame attempt to cash a cheque. Tens of thousands of big salmon, including the very biggest fish, are slaughtered so a very few anglers, an even smaller number of charter captains and one despicable family business can profit. The derby anglers along with roe anglers kill tens of thousands of much scarcer animals for what can only be considered the most colossal waste of a resource in this province. All with a nod and a wink that this is ok and that (the wasted Bass) is horrible. In fact it's the same thing with the caveat that the the slaughter of our pelagic s is massive and most anglers rightly catch and release Bass. Think it over before rationalizing your behaviors or pointing fingers.

It's a small thing but even so, good for Rob Ford. I actually sympathize with people walking on a board walk with guys slinging lures out there. I've seen some pretty careless pier chuckers and a busy boardwalk with lots of non anglers and kids could be a recipe for eye /head injuries etc.

I'm Glad We Don't Make Stuff Here Anymore NF
Snidley replied to bushart's topic in General Discussion
Lots of great Chinese fishing gear like Lucky Craft rods, Jackal rods, Airrus rods, some Daiwa Steez rods, Dobyns rods etc. My contact in the rod business tells me that the Chinese manufacturers have better equipment to manufacture rods than any North America firm. It's about the perimeters of manufacturing and the originating specs provided by the designer. An eye on quality control is also paramount -
North American marketing leaves me astonished time after time. The car the new Dart is based on looks awesome and if it drives like a true Alfa Romeo it would drive well too. Yet the Chrysler honchos dredge up an old name and remove all of the cool styling from the originating car. I guess I just don't get it. Here's a vid of the Alfa the new Dart is based on. http://www.alfagiulietta.com/Default.aspx#/spot

Best reel for cranking in big inline spinners?
Snidley replied to Fisherpete's topic in General Discussion
Te reel Jim Saric uses is a Daiwa Millionaire CVX re badged to say St Croix. I've owned a Millionaire CVZ which is an upgraded CVX and I've owned Callcutta's and a Callcutta TE. I would say the Calcutta TE hands down among those reels. The comparable Daiwa offering is now called a Luna and I have never run one however the CVZ was a much better reel than a regular Callcutta but not nearly as powerfull as the TE. I've heard the Revo Toro's are good reels but I have a Revo STX and it's ok but not anywhere near a CVZ or a TE (except for the 20lb drag). -
Canuck2 has hit the nail on the head. The buyouts of employees that are then rehired as consultants is a very expensive proposition in this province but there is no choice. The insanity of the Liberal government in Ontario, (in fact in any province and on the Federal scene as well) is mind boggling. They are essentially a criminal element that also insists on a political correctness in hiring practices. It's a process that funnels incompetents into the unionized playpen that is now our civil service. We draw from various ethnic, racial, gender and sexual orientations without an over riding emphasis on being able to do the job resulting in an organized cluster of malcontents that can't perform even the most rudimentary functions without outside help from consultants that are often former civil servants themselves. The only solution is to De-certify the union, ditch the current staff and start over with people who want to work now and into the future as well. It won't happen until Ontario achieves "Greek" status when no investors will underwrite the bonds that finance this debacle. At that point insolvency will write the rules and over paid slackers will be out on their ear.

I'm with Ohio Fisherman. I loved those Storm Steelie Warts They cast great and they draw strikes from Bass, Pike, Steelies and Walleye. They are from the "old" Storm moulds so they are excellent fishcatchers. I lost my last one 2 years ago. Still bummed about it.

I was looking to buy something off the St Croix web sale as well. I asked about brokerage since I had been burned before and they explained to me that a 2 piece rod can be shipped USPS parcel mail and would cost around $20 to Canada but a one piece rod is too long for USPS so it has to go courier. They warned me it was a significant cost and $80 surely is exorbitant. They did have some great deals at St Croix recently but my taste runs to 1 piece rods and shipping by courier tears it for me.

OldBassGuy...(not so)contrite poacher unable to see signs. Send help!! or glasses By the way ignorant jerk would generally be applied to lawbreakers and poachers not those that point the offenders out. And definitely your bad

The Bass are 2-3lb. The Sheepies are 10-13lbs. Big difference. They really pull and you actually sacrifice some gear to get them.
-
To emans point they really need to cull some of the pike to get back to the excellent Bass fishery that used to be Montsberg especially on the Raptor Center side. When I started fishing Montsberg there were no pike on the Raptor Center side of the lake. You could run 10lb leader and never lose a bait to biteoff. Now I run 30lb hard saltwater leader because without it you will lose 5 or 6 baits to hammer handles ( I caught about 60 dink pike last time I was at Montsberg and I only fish the Raptor Center side). At some point the management of Conservation areas need some latitude on fish management tools as well. They are Conservation areas after all and the management should be permitted to conserve desirable species like Bass with C&R only and bait restrictions. The real bottom line about Montsberg is that the shore fishing is pathetic. For the life of me I can't understand guys getting up early in the morning driving to and then spending $10 to park to fish such a lame place for shore fishing. That some guys will actually poach the spot for that extremely low level of angling success is truly mind boggling.

Years ago when I was in Law enforcement there was a lady name Susan Ing and she made her name on the police commission. Her focus was racial profiling for Asians. She insisted that there should be no "Asian Crime Unit" in the OPP or municipal forces. What always gave us a laugh was that The Royal Hong Kong Police force stated that not having an Asian Crime Unit when your jurisdiction was a major destination for Hong Kong Chinese was basically insane since, in their opinion, Hong Kong was the epicenter for Organized Crime IN THE WORLD and, in addition, the victims of this criminal activity were inevitably Asian. They were right on both counts. Identifying the perps and their origins is part of understanding the problem and allows authorities to address it effectively. I do agree that native born Canadians are also frequently guilty of stupid abuses of our fish. Witness guys who think you can kill females of the fish you like to catch for their eggs (as bait) (which represents almost all shore based steelheaders)and still have a sustainable fishery or guys that kill thousands of the biggest fish of a target species for prize money(which represents almost all Salmon trollers)and expect great returns year upon year. There couldn't be a more whitebread group of "sportsmen" in the province and they are abusing an even more valuable resource IMO but unfortunately their abuse is legal so we can't do anything about it
-
Funny story. I talked to an enforcement officer at Mountsberg years ago . He was a new recruit and had just gone through sensitivity training. He rightly pointed out that the new Canadians keeping zillions of little panfish/pike were really doing serious bass anglers a favor because these fish predate Bass fry. All true. Same guy several years on. Not so charitable to the various crews found at Montsberg and Valens. I wonder why? I do recognize that racism is a blight and is stupid however at some point aware people must point out that there is a group of new Canadians that are taking advantage and liberal types have to at some point recognize that they are just full on saps for giving them cover. We are at that point here, in the USA, in Europe and I bet in the countries were these folks come from as well. There are lots of goofs out there, many from foreign lands but lots native born too and there's lots of liberals to give them all cover as well. Bottom line poaching is illegal and apprehended perps need to know that there is a fine and possibly confiscation as a result of the transgression even for those who don't speak the language or don't "understand".
