A website in the US actually writes articles about Canadian only market Rapala rods and reels, products that I NEVER see, and I'm a tackle junkie. They must have the worlds worst salesmen distributing their stuff.

Bob I noticed that you use Otter boards. I've heard about them and they look like thewy track well. What are your thoughts on them vs other boards?

U.S. Supreme Court rejects Asian carp measures
Snidley replied to Fish Farmer's topic in General Discussion
I watched them shock the "shwa several years ago. They brought up lots of small fish, in fact that's what they were after. I have seen video of a shock boat on the Mississippi and they brought up hundreds of fish with every go. Most of them were Asian Carp too. I do believe with a war chest of $156 Million there could be an effective shock boat developed if there is not an appropriate one being built today for this purpose. Our collective governments are pretty lame but they do understand electricity. I think -
Last time I was there we got 9 fish in the morning from 9am till about 1pm. Frankies were in the lure mix as well. Some very nice fish too. Truly a superior fishery. I've heard that there are approximately 50K Muskies in Lake St Clair. I guess how big those Muskies are is fairly important as well.

I'd love to buy beer for $18 a 30 case but I wouldn't buy Canadian beer that's for sure. There's also the point that in the US smokes and booze are cheap but repairing the damage from those two vices is very expensive. Up here it's "free" (sort of) but you might die in line before you get fixed up.

I was surprised that while trolling St Clair there was not more emphasis on the specialty lures that are so key to success there. They did show two specialty St Clair lures but the key there are Producers, Woodies, Gotcha's, Fingerlings and Lokes. I guess they were using the Joe Bucher's that sponsor the show but the guys I know that work St Clair wouldn't give those Bucher lures any face time.

I have two favorite teams, the Leafs and whoever is playing the Sens. With that said the Sens have "rebuilt" in one year and will be in the playoffs this year with a decent seeding. I am always concerned when any management in pro sports can't hold a civil press conference treating every question like the party that's asking it is an idiot. Community relations is part of the job in show business after all.

U.S. Supreme Court rejects Asian carp measures
Snidley replied to Fish Farmer's topic in General Discussion
Lets see, we can overfish every other fish using nets but we can't over fish Asian carp using electro shocking (which stuns every fish in the pool and allows the harvesters take the entire school of carp and spare the game fish too). I very much think we can if we have the will to do it. As a by product I'm told that Asian Carp (both species) are very good eating (unlike Common Carp). For sure the Asian population thinks they are excellent for the table. Just how many commercial electro fishing boats would $156 Million buy anyway? Sometimes when you get lemons you need to make lemonade. We are stuck with quagga and zebra mussels and due to their effects on water clarity smallmouth fisherman have made lemonade by catching many more big fat smallies today than in the past often using Gobi lures to do so (double lemonade really). I certainly agree that hiring inspectors in an environment where we need productive job creation is a very good idea to head off further invasive species from impacting the largest inland waterways in the world. The electro fishing could start immediately by the way. -
Great to hear you released her. Nice fish!

If anyone has ever seen electro shocking done in the Mississippi you would not believe the numbers of these huge fish in that river. Why not spend some of those millions on a fleet of electro shock boats and start harvesting. Sometimes solutions don't have to be high tech. -
I see that the cost of a movie went up $2 over the weekend too.

"We"ve got to keep our eye on the long term outcome" Yes we do. Like learning to fly fish with dart flies since Asian Carp will be the only thing to catch once they swim past the electric barrier in high water. The US Supreme Court pulls another one out of the hat. :wallbash: -
Personally I don't use soft plastics much but I agree if you shop at the retail outlets around the GTA you will be paying a lot for bags of brand name plastics. I am on the email lists of all the discount websites in the US and I find that brand name soft plastics are the most frequently discounted, often deep discounted, products offered. Websites like FFO-tackle.com, Overstock baitandtackle.com, fishandsave.com, as well as Basspro, Cabelas, tacklewarehouse's bargin bins often have plastics at $.75 to $2.00 a bag. The only thing is you need to carefully monitor the price of shipping because it can be very costly if you don't. Share the order with several buddies and this cost can be mitigated however. I believe there's a chap on this sites for sale section that regularly carries and extensive line of Yammamoto plastics for $5 a bag and you can pick them up from him ($5 is good but Overstockbait was selling that brand of plastics for $2 a bag just last week). Consumers really should learn to up their game if they are truly concerned about the price of any goods. If you roam around with your chin stuck out every retailer will take advantage since that would represent human nature.

Since Hobie does not make Floatcats anymore this is what I would buy if I was in the Oakville area http://images.cabelas.com/is/image/cabelas/s7_321998_999_01?rgn=0,0,2000,2000&scl=5.2631578947368425&fmt=jpeg&id=1sk7ybHucCp31RAjHGQgqx

That's a great article. Reminds me that when I was allowed on Spoonpullers.com the powerboat trollers, a group that would not be that upset if they rolled over a silent sports aficionado, all commented on how they could not see Kayak Joe when he was out deep with them trolling up salmon (he goes out to about 150ft). I'm betting that the rag toppers can't see him either. Personally I never go past about 40ft (about 1/2 mile off Bronte) and my kickboat sits much higher than the kayaks. The whole point of the article reminds me why I prefer the kickboat for fishing and that the other option I would take is the Foldcat.

The price on that one is attractive but the seat position would leave a lot to be desired. Canadian Tire has the Bass Hound for $1200 and the Sun Dolphin for $1800. I have a buddy with a Bass Hound and I have fished off it at least 50 times and it is a very fishable dureable unit but after a day of fishing you are tired/stiff and you need a pickup truck to move around with it. I still think paying the extra money for the Fold Cat would be worth it and it deflates and can be transported in the trunk of your car. If in fact a standup kayak is viable that is also a great option as flipping to cover is somthing I cannot do from my Hobbie (and I would like that option for some of the swamps around here).

I think the Vaughn store is a pale shadow of the majority of US stores. I think that Canadians can actually get a better deal from the online BPS operation than our retail store. This is especially true since they lowered their shipping to Canada. Basically the Vaughn store does not carry most of the stuff I would want from Bass Pro Shops and really, their prices are out of line. That whole mall basically sucks IMO. Sail coming to Southern Ontario with 3 stores doesn't help either.

Think Daiwa Luna or Millionaire CVZ as much superior to a regular Calcutta (the spool is much better especially for big fish like Musky). On the other hands a Calcutta TE is the best there is in a Musky reel. I never thought much of round Abu's myself.

You sure wouldn't be sneaking up on the fish in that Mokai. Man that's loud.

It's all personal opinion of course but I would suggest that a roto molded polyproplyne ( same material that Kayaks are made from and not an inflatable)kick boat with oars is much better for most fishing around Oakville than a kayak. You may be able to find a Hobie Floatcat around (they have been discontinued) and Cabelas carries a knockoff version for less than half the price (about $500 landed up here). Kayaks are great....for exercise and to some extent for trolling for salmon out in the lake. They are not the greatest thing for casting from however. It's all about poor body position and stability. Earlier a guy who owns a Hobie kayak says he can stand on his kayak and that would be good but I would bet that can be difficult at times, especially in rough water, wind or with a truly big fish on the line. Depending on how much money you want to spend a Fish Eagle Foldcat is another option. A rich guy on the Credit has one and I have seen it up close. It is an inflatable, and generally I don't really like inflatables but they are such a quality build I would look at one of them for about $1900.00. The Foldcat is more like an actual boat and although you can row it I think most people use a trolling motor on them. Don't get me wrong a kayak or even a canoe can still be a lot of fun for fishing just not optimal in my opinion but both a kayak and a canoe offer alternative recreational uses beyond fishing.

Great video but someone should demonstrate to that guy how to land a fish as well as the merits of a life vest.

Just got my brand new Hobie Pro Angler!!!!
Snidley replied to justwannafish's topic in General Discussion
I use a Hobie kickboat but the launches are the same. Be carefull in Toronto Harbour/Toronto Island as the cops will want to see a harbour permit. There's tons of launches around the GTA, virtually every waterfront or stream essentially, but also impounds like Montsberg, Island Lake, Shades Mills, Valens and some others around Hamilton are the ticket. I've had my Hobie for about a dozen years and I still consider it the single best thing I have ever purchased, period. Nothing beats hooking up with a 30lb Chinnook, in the middle of the night, on a bass casting rod. They hit so hard its like a haymaker to the noggin.Thank goodness there's no more standing on piers with loogans or battling the crowds onstream for me thanks to my Hobie. -
The gold one in the picture is a Supreme XT from 2 years ago. I have one and its a great reel but except for the thick bail (like a Diawa air bail) it is the same as the plain Supreme, which is also a great product. My only complaint with the reel is that the clicker on all 5 of my Supremes failed. The drag still worked but it seemed strange watching a Chinnook pull off 200 feet of line without a sound on a spin reel. Pure Fishing did send replacement spools so all is now good. $76 is a great price for the Supreme XT, I paid $99 for mine. FFO-Tackle.com has the plain Supreme for $68 less whatever discount they offer that day BUT shipping can be expensive from them. All my reels are 40 size and they don't make the Patriarch in that size or I would be tempted to try one. For the price you would pay $200 for Shimano of a comparable quality and that reel would weigh significantly more, not being a magnesium reel and all. FFO gets Sorons all the time as well, but they are not magnesium reels to my knowledge. The range from $60 to $80 over there depending on the bering count.

I have owned that model of BPS hardbait and in my opinion they are junk. I would most definitely recommend the BPS XPS minnows, particularly the 3 1/2 inch floating stickbaits (the 4' ones are pretty good too). They are a knockoff of an old Yozuri bait and they catch everything from Bass, Walleye and Pike to Chinnooks and Steelhead. Their shad style bait is also very good. I also do very well with XPS Balsa Boogies for Chinnooks. If you wait for the BPS Spring Classic they are usually on sale either at the Vaughn Store or online. I've bought them for as little as $1.99 USD.

Like Drifter said. I suppose deals are subjective. 25% off what original retail price would be one question I would start with. I'll stand with what I said about the deals issue. No question seeing new stuff and meeting friends is also worth $12 to most anglers BUT at some point the cost of goods effects all hobbies including angling. I for one hope Mike and the boys at Fishing World get in the swing of internet based stores because when I watch the sales of goods on Tackle Warehouse, American Legacy Fishing, Tackle Experts, Land Big Fish, FishandSave, FFO-Tackle, Overstock Bait and Tackle, Fish USA etc I realize just how out of wack the price of fishing gear is up here (with the exception of Le Barons and Fishing World...sometimes) and to date I have yet to see a viable web based fishing site in Canada including the new Cabelas site based in Manitoba.
