Pike Underwater Footage of Follows and Strikes
Snidley replied to PUMP KNOWS's topic in General Discussion
Very good footage. Shows how close they follow without biting. Those Scandinavian lures look awsome especially the Westin ones. Heres some Rapalas that we don't get here https://www.normark.fi/kalastus/vieheet/rapala-vieheet They have videos when you click on the picture of the top 3 lures. The Scoop is a copy of a Luhr Jensen Quiver which I have and have fished for salmon with no luck. Maybe pike is the proper quarry which would be weird for a Luhr Jensen product -

I have a lefty Daiwa Zillion 100SHLA (7.1:1 gear ratio) Also a 7'3" Fenwick Elite Tec cast rod in heavy action rated 12lb to 25lb. The reel is $160 and the rod is $90 Both are in excellent condition Paul 647-951-9142 (Oakville) -
I use single hooks for most of my hardware. I always try to fish close to the bottom so single hooks will help a great deal with hangups. You can use traditional siwash hooks and twist them a bit yourself or you can simply use a large regular treble and cut two of the tynes off. Musky guys often take one tyne off trebles leaving two pointing out from the bottom of the bait. It leads to better hookups and saves expensive musky baits from getting chewed by hook rash which can wreck wooden baits. This is particularly. the case for Lake St Clair trolling lures like Woodies which would barely last one outing trolled with big trebles.

I'm told by very good anglers that the main reason for going with light to extremely light braid (10lb down to 5lb) is stealth. Braid makes noise, in the water and going through your guides. The super light braid is a lot less noisey and therefore in high pressure,or with super negative fish it can make a big difference. It's similar to using fluro leaders or thin diameter leader. Some anglers believe, some think it's hokum.

A couple of things Rizzo. I would be interested in hearing what OMVIC has to say about this issue. I find it hard to believe that you are the only agrieved consumer burned by this scam. Also I have in the past had issues like this get resolved when a notice to appear turned up at the dealership and the warranty provider. I think that these pricks don't realy take a complaint seriously until such time as court paperwork turns up and they have to prepare a court defense. Small claims can offer a solution and there are cost effective paraleagals that specialize in small claims. A succesful claim would include reasonable legal costs in addition to the disputed amounts.

I will repeat. You are the cat. Do not expect the car dealersahip to be helpfull as this is not in their best interest, burning customers with shady financial instruments is in their best interest and consequently this is what they will do today and in the future. It has always been so in the auto trade, including at Toyota dealerships. Hopefully for Rizzo pressure can be brought to bear by OMVIC or the courts or even the consequences of consumer pressure. The lesson to be had here is that finance, be it at car dealerships , at chartered banks, financial planners, brokerages, or insurance entities is a frightfully unethical business built and run by scoundrels and sanctioned by our authorities. This is unlikely to change now or ever. As the saying goes "man is wolf to other man" Protect yourself as best you can by resisting any sales inducement that seems to be a "no brainer" or too good to be true in your favour. ESPECIALLY IN FINANCE

Same guy that bought the Honda outboard has a Ram diesel 2500 for towing 3 snowmobiles and, at work, a welding rig. He has had nothing but trouble with it but there are very few options for his circumstances. You want to buy an FCA product keep this thread in mind and remember the stink starts at the head and moves down. If you have options look elsewhere, and at all times beware of backoffice closers at car dealerships. That's where they make their money and it is always at the customers expense. Warranties are best when offered by the manufacturer but if you talk frankly with Chrysler/FCA dealers they will tell you that there have been numerous issues with factory warranties FOR THEM. This should not effect you as a retail customer but keep this issue in mind when you have a warranty issue and they can't find or solve the problem. In there car business there are many ways to skin a cat. You are the cat.

Back in the day Toyota dealers used to sell an extended warranty called International Warranty. It was NOT in any way affiliated with Toyota other that they seemed to be the largest, but not only, group of dealers selling it. That was a great warranty that did pay out, EXCEPT when they went bust, leaving everybody holding the bag. As I remember there was no recourse through the dealers and there was lots of bad blood, but people kept buying Toyotas. Now imagine a warranty company that goes bust covering Toyotas, with no refund ever offered re non use of warranty service and compare that to a warranty that covers Chryco's AND offers a refund in the unlikely event that the warranty is never used and I give you TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE. Hopefully Rizzo gets his refund but I think anyone who has read this post should consider NEVER buying vehicals from or extended warranties for Chryco/Dodge/Jeep or the Koreans, or the coming Chinese brands. Needless to say if Russians still sold cars in Canada they would be super suspect too. Many in the car busines would also look askance at Nissan, Mazda, GM and Ford as well but that's a big chunk of the Automotive business. Even the Germans do not make cars as reliably as in the past and I've heard lots of complaints about engines in Honda/Acura as well. I will add that Honda small outboards are suspect. My buddy bought a 2017 Honda outboard that had rpm issues out of the box and after much back and forth re fixing the motor Honda gave up and said they could not fix a brand new motor. They have offered a complete refund that has yet to be paid with dealer comments saying it's a problem with all 2017 Honda's up to 9 hp. Makes it hard to carry a positive mental attitude about modrern manufactuing. Auto finance/back office has always been a den of thieves to a level that would curl your hair.

Seems to be one issue in this discussion that permeates the thread, Dodge/Chrysler. Maybe that's a signal to refrain from purchasing anything from this firm. When I was in the car business years ago this firm was a subject of many negative issues and on many, many occasions. This problem was corporate as well as at the dealer level. Rot starts at the head and migrates down the body, so to speak.

Hey Rizzo sorry to hear of your beef with the dealer. Have you contacted OMVIC? My buddy is a used car dealer and he says they can really put the boots to a dealer in Ontario for all things shady. To me this seems very shady

It's less about distance and more about the feel especially with spinners or, when jigging for them, the feel of bottom. With Steelhead they often like a slowly spinning spinner which you can feel with a baitcaster much better than a spin reel imo. When jigging spoons or plastics feeling the bottom is paramount and with a casting rod I find bottom feel is enhanced especially if you use braid. When I try to jig with a spin reel I can do it but I lose a lot of lures and I don't get the great fish catching action that you get from a casting setup. You can cast 1/4oz spinners with a cast setup with good quality equiptment but I would say distance will not come close to a spinning setup particularly since you pretty much have to lob such a light lure on a long rod. Overall nothing beats catching Steelhead or Salmon on a casting rod as far as I'm concerned

The Magic Lure, anyone recognize this spoon?

This lure is the exact duplicate of the "Miracle Spoon" https://www.ebay.ca/itm/Fishing-Spoons-Blue-Fox-Pixie-Dardevle-Hotrod-Flash-Bait-Mepps-Unknown-Lot-13/142723346171?hash=item213af96efb:g:EKEAAOSwXOhabgYK On the back is the logo FLASHBAIT. I have both brands of spoons and this is the original that Phil copied or bought. The only difference is in the brightness of the orange paint and that may be due to the age of the Flashbaits. This does not change the fact that the Flashbaits and Krinkles REALLY work. It's also interesting that the Nebco company, the firm that made the original Flashbait came up with the original version of what we know as the Blue Fox Pixie spoon. For anyone traveling to northen Quebec to target landlocked Salmon around Lake St Jean, the Pixie is the go to bait up there. -
I make my own in line spinners and I also handpaint,/ repair old balsa crankbaits (usually with nailpolish or acrilic water based paint from the art supply stores like Michaels). Go to Angling Specialties in Mississauga for the blades, metal bodies, clevis's and wire for inlines and swap meets for the old balsa or plastic cranks. I look for old Bagley or Rapala balsa cranks especially the ones that are full of bite marks as they are the really cheap ones and the bite marks show that the fish like them already. As far as air brushing there are some guys that can really paint well but for the casual painter the preparation and cleanup are not worth it. I also tie feather treble/siwash hooks using swan feathers I pick up out of the water in spring and fall when swans molt out in the lake or river, Swan feathers are really much better than chicken feathers that you find on comercially tied trebles.

Phil, Phil, Phil. The much sought out Wrinkle Spoon (aka MiracleSpoon) has a predicesor. At the Hamilton swap meet I found what I thought were 2 small size Wrinkle Spoons. Low and behold one of them (naturally the oldest looking beat up one) has the lable on the back saying, Flash Bait, made by the Nebco company out of Minnesota. Further investigation on EBay shows many of these spoons BUT, they are all old and mostly beaters. The ones I purchased were virtually identical except the orange colour is not the same (the Flash Bait's orange is darker, duller and in a less curvey pattern). The old story of nothing's new under the angling sun appears, again, to be true. The swap meet itself was, as always, excellent -
Not only for fishing but polarized glasses really help with reading a green in golf. Yellow lenses for that application.

Braid tangles (and probably mono tangles too) are best addressed with the use of a small size crochet needle. These little needles have a small dull barb at the end and all you need to do is dig into the under lying deeper line on the spool to find and then pull out the loop that causes the birdsnest. I bought mine at the dollar store and then glued it into the top of a big balsa float so it's easy to handle and will float when I drop it in the water. It really saves a lot of line as I seldom, if ever have a birdsnest cutout. As for spinning reel line I prefer Nanofill but any good braid in lower line test ie 8-14lb will work well. I always use a fluro or mono leader as tieing directly with braid to lure results in less bites and lots of tangles at the lure itself.

Osprey Spiritual Performer (OSP) Lures
Snidley replied to SaugaPikeSlayer's topic in General Discussion
HPF crank , Power Dunk crank and Asura jerkbait are all big winners especially for Steelhead. They catch bass too of course. A friend uses the Rudra and says it's good too. They are all VERY expensive even for a Japanese lure. HPF cranks are a common knockoff crank and I'll bet even the knockoffs are good and cost $2 vs $20 for the real deal -
There is no "might" about it. You will find outstanding deals especially if you are interested in used gear. Look for lures with bite marks, don't buy mono/fluro line as it will be old but braid is often one of the better buys at the show. 2 floors now as well. I bet they get 2500 people.

Oshawa pier could be dangerous if ice covered. The water there is at least 20-30' deep with huge rollers and it's a long way down from the pier to the water level, with few ladders. This year it is also under construction but in truth it is no worse than Bronte pier or 16 Mile pier most times. Those stupid handrails make getting to the side a pain . The old marina has always been a trespass as are the marshaling yards just north of the pier itself. For those that don't know it is also verboten to fish off 16 Mile Pier after dark even in the summer months. No lights is the reasoning. Bronte pier(s) are both legal anytime but comon sense is required especially if the water gets as high as it did this spring/summer.

Good hunting Rob. I just talked to Phil at the above number and he does still have Wrinkles, Nastey Girls, Nastey Boys and Predator spoons to sell. He is willing to take calls re getting some for your tackle box and he is located in Mississauga. He has a charter fishing boat that goes out of bronte as well. We did not talk about the Nastey line but they were killer spoons as well. -
