hey maureen, if you have to go to beaverton afterwards, i would take hwy 12 both ways, you'll pass beaverton on the way so you'll know how to get back there later. it's about 1h from beaverton to oshawa. i don't know how much time you'd save on the way using the 400/401

honestly guys, ice fishing is what you make it. someguys are content to sit anchored in a boat and throw a bobber over the side and wait all day - i am a run and gun fisherman and like to boot around to a bunch of different spots and put my lure in front of as many fish as possible when this same active approach is taken when ice fishing, it's really pretty fun - great way to get outside, get some exercise, get a meal for dinner etc. not to mention, all of the electronics that they have for the hardwater now make it entertaining to just go out there even if you don't get bit - pretty cool watchin those perchand pike on the aquaveiw! i really enjoy fishing on the hardwater (almost) as much as softwater. hope that i see you guys out there some day! darcy

i headed out to gilford today at around noon to check the ice and to possibly wet a line (if safe). when i arrived there were about 15 cars parked on the road and as many guys out on the ice from the shallows to almost halfway across the bay. most were either straight out or a bit to the south. after grabbing a scoop of minnows from Terry Goy i walked along with the spud bar to test the ice thickness - between 3 and 4" of ice (3 of blue and 1 of white). the ice was rough in a lot of spots and i didn't feel all that comfortable out there. a few more days will mean another inch or two of ice. punched 4 or 5 holes on the way out to 12' of water and marked some weeds and at one spot some fish for a minute but couldn't coax a hit. at 12' i said "no further" and after a bit i headed in. the east wind definately didn't help the cause and i didn't want to tempt fate too much even with a float suit and spikes. so no fish, but two good things on the day were: 1 - tried out the new lowrance x-67c ice machine and really liked it - great unit so far. 2 - it was as cold as a witches teet out there and at any pressure crack that i saw, new ice was being made. probably going to try to head out on wednesday and fish hard - really only tried one presentation today darcy ps - exercise extreme caution if going out on the lake - take a bar and check the ice often

canal is a shallow, manmade lake, about 1/3 to 1/2 of it is a product of the locks on the trent system. lots of small pike in this lake and some alright largemouth bass. i've also caught a few decent smallies as well but nothing like you'll get on simcoe. there are also walleye in canal but they are few and far between. it is an alright alternative to simcoe but there are many kawartha lakes that are waaaaay better fisheries, within 1 to 2 hours of canal.

i have the aquaveiw scout (since last feb) and i rate it as ok. it is definately a cool toy, it's pretty entertaining to see the fish and it's handy for identifying bottom structure/weed types etc. the downside is that it is very cheaply built. for the amount that those things cost, i thought that it would be constructed a bit sturdier (ie - the knobs for brightness & contrast) also, camilj makes a good point with respect to visibility as far as a good purchase, don't know if it was worth the money but whatever, i have it now so i might as well make good use of it

my breakdown for a typical year: boat 60% trib 15% ice 25% although i really only fish from boat in the summer, fall/winter brings trib fishing and ice fishing (weather permiting of course). i try to get the boat out as early as i can in the spring. regardless, i try to get out at least once a week(year round) to do some sort of fishing.
