  1. That's really cool. Being 60 million years old would imply that they were around while or just after the dinosaurs were wiped out. Very interesting find.
  2. Thanks guys. Like I said, I've never really targeted pike, only caught by accident. But bass isn't open and the perch seemed really small at Island Lake when I was there, so I figured maybe pike would be a nice change. I've heard the reaction strike is the key for pike too. Now that I've got a better handle on the lakes I'll likely be casting next time. When I have some time, I'll likely stop by your store as my tackle box is never really fully stocked lol. As for Guelph Lake, it is pretty featureless, but I was locating fish along the shore at pretty much every weedy spot, especially around the big island. I also noticed a couple road beds that ran through and figured that might provide some structure. The north side where the main river flows in is full of snags and submerged trees, and locating fish there wasn't difficult either.
  3. I was out at Island Lake two weekends ago and Guelph Lake Last weekend, both for the first time hunting for Pike. Since I was new to these lakes I spent most of the time trolling with spinners, cranks, worm harnesses and spoons but couldn't locate any pike. Found lots of bass, perch, sunfish, etc., but had trouble locating pike. I also don't recall ever intentionally targeting pike on any of my other fishing trips, they always just seem to be the thing I catch when bass or walleye fishing. Any tips on colours or presentations that might help bring them in? Any tips are appreciated. I'll likely try either of these locations again this coming weekend, and will give a report with any of the tips provided . Thanks!
  4. lol - the honey badger... There was one of those nature documentaries on PBS a while back about the honey badger. This guy had one in his nature preserve for some reason - I think someone had it as a pet and realized eventually it wasn't a good idea. Anyway, he eventually had to take everything out of it's open air pen because it would move sticks, logs, rocks etc. to the wall and climb out, destroy the house and harass the other animals (including lions). Even when everything was removed he would roll up balls of mud and then climb out. Not to mention it also figured out how to open the latch on the gate too... As for the lions, the owner of the sanctuary said the badger would run between the legs of the lion and bite his testicles. However, the second time it didn't end well for the badger. He survived, but barely. I didn't realize even the badgers in this part of the world were so ferocious. I'll be well served to keep my and my dog's distance.
  5. There's this too... why does every fish need to be posed for? Or do you just need an opportunity to hold it 6' in front of you and make sure you have the wide angle lens on the camera so the fish looks 3 x the size it actually is?
  6. Again, it comes down to the people in the field to take the brunt of the legislation while the pencil pushers and lawmakers get to feel like they've done something. Kudos to them for putting some practical sense into this matter
  7. That's awesome. Best I've ever done is catch two perch with a jig and a 2 inch trailer. One took the jig the other took the trailer. Same worm too the greedy buggers
  8. All I said was it's not a good idea to post the pic. Since this topic is readily viewable by the entirety of the interwebs, you don't need to encourage the mouth breathers out there that it's no big deal. Not saying it is a big deal, we just don't need more people doing it. And yes, it's a smallie - we do have more than enough of those as it is. 1 fish isn't the end of the world, 100 and then there might be an issue, even if they're released again they've still left their spawning beds unguarded. It's a complicated issue. I know I've caught fish out of season when targeting something else - especially bass. I just don't tell anyone! Good job on the first fish though- there will be many more to come, I'm sure!
  9. That is one of the fattest perch I have ever seen at the bottom of the first pic! Sometimes a little ripple helps. If you can't see them, they can't see you, and usually that helps them forget why you're there.
  10. Trout can turn on and off seemingly randomly. Glad you weren't targeting the bass, but you probably shouldn't post photos of fish caught out of season.
  11. Creepy as all hell sure, but those kids could rock your socks off. Cool tune too!
  12. I don't think it will spell the end-times if you're forced to stop using lead split-shot. There really is no "safe" level of lead exposure either. But the thing is, it's not an end user issue, except here. Lead is banned in electronics because it makes for unsafe work environments (ever wonder why electronics fail and overheat more often now?)
  13. Yeah, to properly do it justice all the way from Walkerton to Southampton you need at least two days. Last time I did we stopped in Paisley the first night at the campground. Starting anywhere further upstream towards Hanover or Durham is a waste of time. You'd end up portaging further than boating.
  14. pretty much confirms my opinion, thanks guys! Although I did get an email from the GRCA saying the MNR stocked 500 Browns and the GRCA put in an additional 240 rainbows yesterday in Rockwood, in case anyone is concerned
  15. Man, what a rip off! I thought everything there was supposed to be $1-$2 lol
  16. I'm taking my young cousin fishing this Sunday and was trying to decide where to go. Looking for a fun and easy place to get to and have narrowed it down to island lake in Orangeville or Rockwood park. I'll be bringing a canoe. Any suggestions or tips on which spot is better this time of year? I know Rockwood stocks trout and island lake should be good for crappie and perch. Which would you choose? Thanks
  17. Man people will simply not stand for these wind turbines...
  18. And I just finished reading this... http://www.macleans.ca/society/life/seniors-and-the-generation-spending-gap/
  19. My goal is to get out as much as possible to justify my spending and see if my sudden obsession with fish will carry over to next spring when I hopefully have enough saved up to afford a boat.
  20. I remember a story of a contractor confusing the sanitary and storm connections on a bunch of houses in a subdivision resulting in some "brown trout" swimming in the stormwater management pond
  21. Aww, looks like one of the admins/mods didn't appreciate my South Park reference .
  22. Golf course I used to work at had goldfish in the ponds... not sure if that counts lol
  23. West of Orangeville on 109 there was a line of about 9 tractor trailers that couldn't make it up the hill out of town this morning. Too much ice
