Mike, you can use the stock transducer that comes with the unit on the ice with a little ingenuity. I dunno about you but 99% of the guys I meet on the river are there to have a good time and usually are more then willing to lend a helping hand.

If you can see them, they can see you, I wouldn't waste my time trying to catch steelies in 2ft of riffle water. Keep walking until you find some deeper pools/runs.

A medium spinning outfit, some 12lb braid some jigs and half a shrimp.. Should be able to catch all kinds of stuff right off the beach.
