bushart replied to Leecher's topic in General Discussion
Looks Good Leechman What are you going to use for a ring to tie your line to?--Are you going with a small eyescrew into the body or something through the bill. Are you painting it White? Bushart -

My son is home this weekend for a visit so it was off to the lake and found the fish in familiar old haunts. Windblown rocky points ---classic looking smallie territory. To top off the old school pattern they were hitting tubes --low tech but always a good weapon at times Bushart

No expert by any stretch here Holdy but possibly the boyfriend should shop other financial institutions till one gives him a mortgage on his own. Thus that institution would then pay off the joint mortgage closing the contract with that bank (of course there's always penalties) and get a lawyer to ensure she's removed from leins. Other option is sell the house for costs and start again. Bushart

Well, Well, well..... Wonder how this story plays into access to navigible waterways---remember the story Bill M told about landowners-around that saugeen creek-and that if you can run a canoe on it your gold. I guess it's true..."All pigs are created equal but some pigs are more equal than others". I seen this crap going on in the past with outfitters putting their US hunters on stands on "CROWN" land and them getting upset when Joe the Canadian deerhunter walks under his treestand. Bushart

Good Luck --I hope it'll be for you---very physically and at times emotionally taxing. On a side note---If I was a computer type guy and looking for a career with good pay and job security Electricians in industry play with PLC's more than pulling wire----or Robotics and it's programming is the future. I was a tradesman most of my career-----hard to be out of work--pretty fair living also. Bushart

A few outside points first... Well long ago I watched an interview with Red Fisher who was trying to teach conservation about letting a few go and he brought a good point...Our ancestoral tribes held good hunters (Fishers) in admiration for providing thus giving a then type celebrity status. This carried on where "Big" fish was the target and status went along. I think the turning point in this mindset was declining fish stocks put pressure on the status quo and conservation was now the point allowing stocks for our children to "ENJOY OUR HERITAGE" (Back off P3TA) Another view is I watched an interview with David Suzuki and actually heard him say that he does NOT believe in catch and release and fishing was and always should be for food. Well now bout me...I started fishing to spend time outdoors with my family and as a kid it was always an adventure---times with my Dad I'll always remember. Eating fish was a plus---it did become competitive in my life and I did at one time fish tourneys (NO more) Now it's about time with my family--teaching all that I have learned (And still eating a few) and being outdoors cutting off this embilical to the internet fishing sites. I do take up the challenge with fishing the same as figuring out a big buck---in trying to get one step ahead. Bushart

All very true...I also recall another time back in the 70's when a buddy and myself headed into the Haliburton area with a cartopper and a tent hoping to find a lake shore to fish and camp----Don't recommend this cause any lake with a road to it was sewn up with cottages. Anyway we finally were ready to give up when we saw a group of cottagers talking and I asked if they knew where we could go and pitch a tent and fish---well turns out one of them had a vacant lot just down the lake and he gave us the OK. Guess the story is that approach has served us well over time. Bushart

1st point: I'm under the belief that the landowner must own both sides of the river to claim any riverbed ownership and if it's navigible it gets harder---what is she gonna do if your fishing "Her" water from a canoe--nicely suspended 3 feet above her riverbed?? 2nd point: It truly is a shame when people wish to lock up the land and waters along with the fish and game.(Maybe in this instance we can learn from our first nations about sharing these items with each other) BUT people have proven to be pigs and landowners get upset to come down to said riverbank to find empty beercases-smashed bottles--tin cans--broken fences etc etc etc. 3rd & last In my early 20's a friend and myself found a country road outside of Dunville and found our way down to the Grand River--we set out our lines and it was'nt long a man and his bear sized german shephard arrived and notified us we were on private prop. My friend and I apologized for not knowing and we asked where we could fish---well I guess he thought we were harmless and polite and he said ok right here---he was just keeping tabs to ensure his prop was not going to become a dump---too bad most of these stories did'nt end like this--we were always allowed access after that. (Nice old guy) But there's also the story where we were fishing the lower stretches of Bronte at night and watched a group of brain surgeons light a 30 ft pine completely on fire... Bushart

I used to wade clear rivers and creeks for smallies in the summer months to pass the time.. The most productive lures I used were spinners------Easy to carry in a small box---other fish like trout smack em---usuall ride above snaggy rocks. These lures will all work but I liked the versatility of spinners in these situations---can even thread the dawgs garden hackle on em. My fav was a Panther Martin in a bumble bee colour but mepps black fury with a danglin worm was close 2nd. Now go forth young grasshopper Bushart

You really should double check me here but I think you can and say your basically getting back the mounting costs (Taxidermy) A CO will answer this.-the MNR office is where I went for the antler ok. They'll direct you. Bushart
-
the deal the MNR will tell you is that the value of the art has to be more than the value of the antlers Like you can't just paint your antlers blue and sell them. It's a delicate matter to stay within the laws of the land---otherwise there'd be open season on antlers. Bushart
-
Thanks all.. Even though I still have more antler sets laying around my shed..it will be a while before I do that again... There is a lot of aspects to get it to that point---one being the curvature of the antler dictating how the painting will flow---that rough surface is hard on brushes as well. Bushart
