    OFN

This thread struck a nerve so I'm going to just type away..... Other than the short hiatus I had back in 2002 Ive been here since the very birth of OFC. The day I got the call from Kevin at Lakair Lodge requesting I post a thread on a friends fishing discussion board to help get things started. It was the very first post on TJ's OFC from what I remember. Since those days I've logged on almost every day....OFC went through ups and downs like any growing family and there were times I wanted to just walk away from it all but something just kept on dragging me back... Like mercman says, we laugh together when we are happy,we cry together in times of sadness and we morn along side of families and friends when we loose the ones we love so dearly here. Although other sites are more fishing fanatical and they ridicule our wonderful OFC for being so off topic we will always have something they do not and thats the compassion to be with and help each other in the most sincerest of ways when the going gets tuff. Each and every one of you are the very fibers that makes this site what it is today and I'm proud of what we are and what we have become and while many websites come and go we continue to stand strong as a community with deep roots holding us firm in place. OFC forever......
  3. My god this is sad news. I was just talking with him a little while ago about helping him get started into fly tying. I guess we'll just have to do it another time eh John.Going miss you buddy.... My condolences go out to Johns family and freinds.
  4. We just had a little squal go through London but its over now
  5. And on that note lets put this thread to rest...
  6. John, I just bought a 14ft square stern fiberglass canoe and I'm not doing anything special with it other than puting some horsey's on the transom some day. I do have a boaters card though and thats the only thing I'd be concerned about in your case.
  7. Canadian Tire sells a boaters safety kit in a small bucket that has everything you will need other than life jackets, oars and an anchor with the correct length of rope. The second link below also has an anchor in its kit if I'm not mistaken. You can also buy clamp on bow and stern lights for night fishing. http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/5/SportsRec/Marine/MarineSafety/PRD~0790041P/Fox%252B40%252BMarine%252BSafety%252BKit.jsp?locale=en http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/5/SportsRec/Marine/MarineSafety/PRD~0790043P/Fox%252B40%252BDeluxe%252BMarine%252BSafety%252BKit.jsp?locale=en http://www.marineengine.com/products/accessory.php?in=1144259 http://www.marineengine.com/products/accessory.php?in=1142603 Not sure about the ownership and registration on a 12 footer. I'm sure someone will chime in....
  8. As far as I can see mother nature has already taken care of mostly everything for you. I boiled a fresh skull in the house at the stove with the ventalation fan on and didn't stink up the house but then again it was fresh. As for the antlers, just clean them up and keep them natural. The mount is personal preference. I would just google "European skull mounts" and look around at some of the stuff they are mounting their skulls on and then just make your own...
  9. Ive done a couple European head mounts in my day. If all the flesh is gone and the brain cavity is empty then boil the skull in water/Dawn dish detergent solution for a couple hours. Then take a brush and scrub off anything loose like dirt or remaining bits of material. Pick out any loose material from inside the scull as well. Now prepare a bleach and water solution and soak scull for another 24 hours. Make sure to tape off the antlers where they meet the scull so they don't get bleach on them. Just submerge the scull in the bleach up to where the antlers begin.Let sit and dry for a couple days. Now get white epoxy appliance paint from Walmart. Tape off the antlers completely this time and spray bomb generously inside and out. Let it dry and then give it another coat. This will give the scull a white plastic appearance and will last forever. Good Luck !!
  10. Bill, There are camping sites as well as cottages. I would call Kevin ahead of time and book a site or a cottage and a boat for your stay. http://www.lakair.com/
  11. Took a 6 banger out for a test drive awhile back. Man do they ever have a lot of giddy up for a six !
  12. Sorry to here that Dan...My condolences to you and your family.
  13. This a great site !! http://www.cooksrecipes.com/category/seafood.html
  14. That solar panel would make a heck of a casting platform
  15. Nice...Would it fit a small box of kleenex's in it ?
  16. Not sure if anyone has mentioned this but if its a really great fishing trip your after in Nipissing book it for July. Everything is in high gear and where they are supposed to be...Muskie and pike on the weed flats, largemouth in the back bays, smallies on the shallow rock shoals and walley on the inclines and in the weed flats if your into rip jiggin for them.... West Bay is a great little part of Nipissing with lots of Lodges to pick from. Memquisit or Lakair will put you the closest to to West Bay for a shorter boat ride to the best fishing holes. As for bugs the deer flies will be out as well as mosquitos in July but the fishing will make up for all that. Good Luck !!
  17. Happy Birthday Carole, Hope you have a great day
  18. Oh ya,the knot I like to use is called the improved clinch knot...You can see how its done on this link http://www.animatedknots.com/indexfishing.php and another good illustration of the improved clinch http://www.netknots.com/html/improved_clinch_knot.html
  19. Skeeter, So much to learn...I'll take a poke at the leader length question. Really all boils down to water clarity. On your crystal clear days you may want as much as 36 inches hook to the swivel/main line. I usually pull off about an arms length in these conditions. In murky stained water you can get away with running your main line to the hook or at least cut back the leader to half size,18 inches or so all pending.. In murky water I usually start off with main line and if nothing happens after a few drifts I add a section of tippet and give that a go.. Good luck !!
