New Boater - Boat Launch Advice and Etiquette
lew replied to love2fishhave2work's topic in General Discussion
A spare tire for your trailer is an ABSOLUTE must have item. You'll have to check the tire size on the tires already on the trailer and then match them up, and also be sure the wheel has the same number of lugs as already installed. Another thing is to check the wheel wrench for your car to see if it'll fit the lugs on your trailer wheels as their not all the same size and you may have to buy a seperate one but their not expensive. -
I don't think I've ever heard of any other brand of rod that breaks as often as Fenwick and it seems to be a very common complaint with them for some reason.

Your absolutely right Nip, none of these companies would still be around after all these years if they weren't producing good engines on a consistent basis. It just depend on individual preference.

If by chance your alone at the ramp and are having problems for whatever reason....wind, current or anything else....don't hesitate to ask another person to give you a hand. As mentioned above, we were all novices ourselves at one point, and sometimes that extra hand makes all the difference. And also offer your assistance to someone else who looks like they could use it. Any fisherman.....well almost......will be more than happy to lend a hand. Don't worry, it's not nearly as difficult as it sometimes looks -
Dan, if I was buying another motor tomorrow, it'd be another Merc too !!
-
Well done Phil, any fish you can catch while your sposed to be working is a beaut !!
-
My 2001, Merc 4 stroke, 90 HP, has been absolutely flawless since the day I bought it and I'd highly recommend it to anyone. Maintanence is simple and everything is easy to get at. Quiet, smooth and purring like a kitten the second you touch the key.

Awesome job as usual Chris, I'm always very impressed with the work you do !!

Hmmmmm, what's this all about Pete.....you phone me yesterday just to shoot the bull and you don't even tell me it's your B-Day ?? Guess you didn't want to share your cake with your favorite net man eh ?? Oh well, Happy Birthday anyways bud and I'll see you in 2 weeks !!!! All the best to you Pete !!!!

Hey Monique, Happy Biirthday kiddo !! Here's the way most of us are more used to seeing you though
-
Very impressive work indeed, Dax !! It's always good to see the different projects folks take on over the winter.

My Crestliner came with a 90 HP which is what it's rated for by USSC, but the plate also says maximum 50 HP by Transport Canada, so I called TC and they said Canada normally under rates them compared to the States, or safety's sake. They did say however, that the HP ratings are only a recommendation basically, and that legally you can use whatever size motor you want, but as others have stated, it may compromise and insurance claim.

That was a class act Caper -
You'll do OK with the C-3 It's an inexpensive reel but stands up well and will take some abuse with basic maintanance. The 4600 is the smallest version but will work well for casting and can also be used as a trolling reel with the clicker to alert you to a strike.

I've never heard that about pressure treated trailer bunks before Fishnfiend, but it's an interesting thought.
-
Couple years ago, I backed my boat off the trailer and one of the bunks actually broke in half. Luckily I was at my trailer park, so I just tied the boat to my dock, went to town and got a new piece of presssure treated wood, removed the carpet from the old bunk and put it on the new one and it was good to go again in an hour. I had a close look at the broken piece and it snapped right on a knot in the wood. Could have been a very bad situation though if it had happened while I was loading the boat on some ramp late at night on a different lake......just something to think about.

All good stuff there Pooch, thanks. For some reason, trailer tires always seem to split on the sidewall alot faster than car tires and it's imperative to check them frequentely. Mine are checked VERY closely several times a year. Same as trailer tire pressure, mine is checked before EVERY trip.

I've got a no-name with a 3.75 Briggs & Straton 4 stroke up at the trailer that I bought for $165 about 10-12 years ago and this thing has more enery than the Duracell Bunny. I change the oil every couple years along with a new plug and it just keeps on going. Even when I cut the grass up there for the 1st time in May each year, after sitting under a tarp all winter, it'll still usually fire on the 1st pull. I blew the muffler off it last year and it now sounds like a race car, so I'll have to replace that, but so far that's the only problem I've ever had with it. I don't think you always need to spend big $$$$ to get quality.

My position error and altitude are now flashing zero and tracking flashes 11 Lat & long are flashing similar #'s to yours
-
OK, I turned it off, waited a few minutes and re-started, but the numbers are still flashing, yet the satellites are still indicated in the circle and verticle bars.

Hi guys, with the warm weather I decided to take my new GPS out to the backyard and see if I can figure out how to operate it. Even though I've used depth finders for years, this is my 1st ever GPS unit, and although I've been in lotsa boats with them, I've never really paid much attention to the set-up so I'm a bit confused on this right now. I hooked it up to a battery, then plugged the antenae into the unit and turned it on. The antenae is sitting in the center of the yard with a clear view of the sky from all angles I went to the satellite status page and on the right hand side in the circle it shows all the satellites, and in the verticle bars below, it would indicate the signal strength.....I think ?? On the left side of the page it shows all the different numbers but some of them are flashing......position error, ground speed, lattitude, longitude and altitude Distance, course and bearing show a dotted line. Time and date are solid and correct even though I didn't set them. After about 10 minutes, the numbers stopped flashing and stayed on solid for about 5 minutes, then began flashing again and are still doing it after an hour. Am I locked into the satellites or not and if not, what am I doing wrong ?? All connections are tight and the battery is fully charged. It's a Lowrance LCX-17M This picture was taken a few minutes ago......thanks boyz
