Canada's last First World War veteran dies at 109
lew replied to kickingfrog's topic in General Discussion
It's wonderful that he lived to such a ripe old age and stayed relatively healthy till the end, but also sad now that he's gone because of what he represented and stood for. Those guys that volunteered to fight in that horror were the true meaning of what a hero is and Canada owes so much to them. They'll hold a special place in Canada's proud military history and hopefully their story will continue to be told so that their never forgotten. My grandfather fought in the trenches of France with the British Army in WW1 and the stories he used to tell me were nothing short of horrendous and to think that we had men brave enough to voluntarily face that nightmare is almost unbelievable. We can't ever repay what we owe them and I hope their memory lives forever !! -
Cliff, I just got back from the Rogers store where I picked up my Hub and hopefully it'll do the trick for me. It's $50 per month and as mentioned by FSNmachine it gives me 3+ GB which should be plenty for what I do on the puter. If I need more it's only about $10 per month extra and brings me up to 5 GB It also gives me my home phones with call display, call waiting, voicemail yada yada. I've talked to a few folks here thru PM's plus a couple friends and everyone seems happy with this set-up, so I'll just keep my fingers crossed and hope for the best. Only strange thing though is it says right on the Rogers box that certain areas of Canada may need an external antenna to boost reception, but when I enquired about them they said their not available in Canada and have to be ordered from the States They said it won't be required for the Peterboro area though.

Thanks fellas, it would seem everyone is in agreement that the hub will be OK for the internet so I guess I'll contact Rogers and set it up. I spose no matter what happens, it'll be far superior to Dial-Up

I've used Rogers for many years here in Toronto for cable, internet, home phones and cell phones and have been satisfied with their service, but now I'm moving to the country in about 10 days and things are gonna change. I was talking to Rogers today to see what's available up there.....15 miles north of Peterboro...... and he told me about something new that just came out recentely called a Rocket Hub. I plug this Hub into the wall, then plug my computer into it and it'll give me hi-speed internet comperable in speed to what I have now, plus I can plug my home phone into it and use my wireless phones around the house too. It'll cost me $150 up front to buy this hub then $50 per month after that for hi-speed & phones. The price doesn't sound bad to me but just wondered if anybody is familiar with these things and do they actually work as well as he says, or is it just a salesmans pitch ?? Any thoughts ??

Another option for those looking for an excellent career is emergency services.....fire department, copper or paramedic. Same as Spiels steel mills, the $$$$ is good along with great benefits but you'll work some long hours in some of the worst conditions imaginable, but when you go home at the end of the day......or night......you'll know you've done some good stuff. And if you play your cards right, like I did, you can retire early (53) and spend the rest of your days fishing all across Ontario. Give it some thought boyz.

Canadian Armed Forces are always looking for some good men, specially now, and it's a decision you'll never regret making, plus you'll be doing a valuable service for your country.

Grandma's are real special people, sorry for you loss Tinman.

Joe, I think your biggest problem here was you were casting to the wrong spot. Pretty sure you shoulda been aiming for the water rather than the trees Other than that, welcome home bud, it sounds like an excellent vacation.

I'll stop by tomorrow Henry, it'll be good to finally meet you.

Your right Roy, this same discussion comes up all the time and it never changes, there's always a few "experts" who like to tell others that their doing it wrong. I've been using a baitcaster and switching hands for the retrieve for probably 55 years, faaaaar longer than most of our resident experts have even been alive and I'll put my casting skills up against any of them, both in distance & accuracy. Like I say just about every time this topic comes up, do whatever the heck feels best to you. If it doesn't feel right, then switch around till you find what works best and don't let anyone tell you your wrong.

Morning Tom, moving day is March 1st.

Have a great vacation Joe and don't forget to send us a postcard.

Been the same here in Toronto Dave, I think I've dusted off the driveway twice this year and we have absolutely no snow on the ground. I just got in from my morning hike in the woods with the pooch a few minutes ago and it sure is nice to wander the trails in running shoes in February.

Thanks for taking the time to post all that info Mike, it gives me lots more to think about. Sheeesh, and here I thought picking out the counters was gonna be an easy task

That's funny Dutch, I travel that road all the time and never knew there was a granite dealer there, but I guess we don't see things we're not looking for. Anyways, that's only a couple miles from my trailer and about 15 miles from the new house so I'll definetely get in touch with him and see what he's got to say. Thanks again everyone !!

Looks like I'll probably be missing this years g2g for the 1st time in about 6 years Joe, but Diane and I, along with a few others, have booked Lakair cabins for the 1st week of July, infact I'll be in #11 too.

Thanks for all your different opinions guys, that's what I was hoping for. Some really good thoughts on both the granite & quartz, plus a couple other products I'm not really familiar with. Looks I'll be doing a bit more reading on everything now. Thanks again everyone

Question for those of you with either granite or quartz countertops. After we move into the new house in a few weeks were gonna replace all the countertops but I'm undecided on which to go with as I've heard good things about both and would like to hear from those of you with either. Granite is extremely popular and was my 1st choice, but I've heard that it's not as stain resistant as quartz and has to be sealed once in awhile, but I don't see how that could be a big job. Quartz on the other hand is much harder and less pourous so will not stain, but sounds like it's quite a bit more $$$$ I've only actually talked to one countertop company (in Peterboro) who deals in both products and they say it's basically a personal choice and doesn't really recommend one over the other. If I remember correctly, the granite is gonna be about $70 a sq. ft installed and the quartz will be about $90 installed. It's a big kitchen and we're gonna have about 30' of counter, plus a 5' center island so it's gonna be very expensive which ever way I go, but I don't mind paying extra for the quartz if it'll be that much better. Any thoughts ??

Alternated between day & night shifts for 33 years but have been enjoying the good life for close to a decade now, but still enjoy the early morning part of the day the best.

Friday for me too

Nope, infact I don't think they ever tried to figure it out themselves, they just kept putting a whole new unit in. Happened about 4 different times where I'd put on the turn signal and the 4 way flashers would come on. After the 4th time and the expiration of the warranty, with no explanation of the problem or even an apology for all my wasted time sitting in the waiting room, I got rid of it. Too bad actually cause I really liked the Dakota, but the Chrysler service sucked and I had no intention of having to start paying for parts & service when they couldn't be bothered fixing the propblem right in the 1st place. Other than that though, it was a good vehicle.

I remember the days when a 440 was considered a big powerful machine, now guys are saying a 700 is too small Progress I spose.........
-
Congrats on the new truck, you should be happy with it. I bought a new Dakota in 2001 and drove it for 3 years and really enjoyed it other than the fact that the turns signals kept going on the fritz, but that was covered under warranty. Best of luck with the new ride.

Or you could just phone them and get all the info you need........905-761-4000
