  1. For "Glamping". We have used the large tent sold at Costco. Granted I can not recall going through a storm in it yet. (4 years) We set up a BYOBed and its pretty close to a hotel room. Jr. ends up on the floor with the dog. It would have room for a couple little fellas on the floor as well as the bed. I don't recall the price but remember it did not break the bank by anymeans. Plus there return poicy is a plus if you don't like it. Costco actually has some decent camping gear on occasion. For our backpacking canoe trips we use a McKinley and a eureka tent. Lighter weight and have definetly gone through a few storms so I can attest to there waterproofness.
  2. Can't get much better than that!! Nice going!! Apparently you could breast that one
  3. Thats a very nice perch!! Looks like a meal for one!!
  4. I'm sure you saw the soft top on kijji in sault ste.Marie. within your budget, add looks a little weird though.
  5. ok, let's start with....Your loft is, is not a loft. From the looks of it those are a standard truss, designed to carry the load of ceiling and that's about it. Loading too much on the bottom cord is a bad idea. Stuffing Batt insulation between the rafters is not a great approach to insulating the roof or ceiling. A required air space of a 1.5" is needed between any insulation and roof decking in any roof application. This allows for the roofing material (shingles usually) to breathe a bit. If it is a steel roof, or shingles almost worn out, let me know, and there are cheap ways to gain the required air space. The "stuff" in the loft....Can it be removed and go somewhere else? Or do you really want an unpractical, area to put things. I ask because putting in aflat ceiling attached to the truss bottom cord, putting in some ceiling joists in your addition area, and blowing in some cellulose in the new attic area would be fairly simple and provide an excellent and cost effective attic. Cellulose is cheap and does a very good job, much better than any batt. If you ever insist on batt insulation IMO buy roxul, fibreglass batts are not very effective. Once you have an attic insulated you have achieved a 80% gain in your heat loss. (Drywall, vapour barrier, r40-50 cellulose.) Your walls.... what is your exterior cladding? I will assume it is siding, regardless.....I highly doubt you want to tear off all the drywall...IMO and proven, Vapour barrier is not going to make any difference in your wall cavity. It is known that 2 coats of latex paint are the equivalent to a 6 mil vapour barrier. VB is a canadian thing, which is currently under debate. This is with a drywall tight approach.(which is accepted in the U.S.) When people talk of rotted walls, vapour barrier has no effect in causing or preventing this. VB can contain mould issues but does not eliminate them. An Air leak is a air leak, The chances of a perfect VB are slim to none IMO. I do use VB and try to do the best job possible, but in a retrofit like yours it would not be of major concern IMO. Mould is a whole story in it self and is a serious concern, but can discussed in detail later if you want. I would continue with your plan of blowing cellulose in the walls either from the inside or outside. Fireblocks are not much of an issue and easily detected by a experienced insulator. Again this is all due to cost effectiveness because of a retrofit. In A new building MY approach would involve vapour barrier and possibly spray foam. Insulating under your concrete floor. Lots of awesome ways. Do not forget that you can put all the insulation you want in the walls and ceiling, but you will still have a 16 x 8 garage door that is a large source of cold and draft. Truthfully I would keep all the money in my pocket, and do nothing. Freezing up maybe 6 days a year wouldn't/doesn't bother me too much. Build a dandy new shop in the future. I know the views expressed are solely mine. Construction allows for ALOT of different opinions. Listen to them all, and do what makes sense to you and your wallet. MM
  6. How wide is your garage door? or building width?
  7. I will go out on a limb and guess.... with this new format and attempt to spark interest and to start filling their half empty stands. That D.E. II will have a little something extra under the hood by race end, and win the Daytona 500. It will be like poetry written by the Franze family. I do believe there is some advantages awarded once in a while. MM
  8. Nice, This will be a help to see your situation and point you in the right direction. I asked some of the other questions because this winter there is a bunch of garages that are freezing up for the first time. This weather is unusual for southern Ontario. My father claimed for the first time in 20 years..the water bottles in his garage froze. For the record I am licensed carpenter in a 5th generation construction business, I have been on the tools for the last 22 years. I can give you advice and you can take it if you like. Oh also, I'm Scotish and treat your money like it was mine. cheers MM
  9. I know that October had a no tax event
  10. I own a stradic, how often do you send them in for a cleaning, what's the process to set it up, and whats the turn around time, and approximate cost? I have never owned a reel worth doing this. Thanks. MM
  11. How long have you had the house? Do you plan on living here for awhile? What are you using the garage for? storage / keeping vehicles. both What heartache is the freezing causing? You will need a heat source in the winter if you insulate. Or you could be making a fridge. Whats your budget? Do you think this type of winter will be our typical? If you can answer these questions, I can try and help MM
  12. My favourite Provincial Park is Awenda within your travel distance, with very small kids. Beauty hardwood forest, very large spread out sites, town not too far, sites away from water for wondering kids, decent playgrounds. Just a very nice park IMO and Ive been to a bunch with the family.
  13. I found a fairly detailed and interesting read on this conversation. Im sorry I couldn't copy and paste it here. I googled "correct height to mount engine on transom" and a pdf was there. It had a bit of conflicting answers to what I am trying to solve.
  14. Best to drink it now, unless it its in a wood barrel. Cheers Big Ears MM
  15. Wooo-hee .........Ive had lady friends tell me to add an inch before and I couldn't, but never heard I've got an inch too much I understand what you fellas are trying to tell me. Is this a case where too much shaft is really exaggerated while under heavy load, and the unability to achieve plane while approaching maximum capacity? Cause as earlier stated, under light loads the boat pops up on plane in a jiffy and have never had issues with handling IMO? Again, I appreciate all the helpful information that I receive from this forum. Cheers M.M. p.s. next post will have a much cleaner tone....sorry to some.
  16. Thanks for the info. The motor is actually a ss and clamped on for reasons needed. Im sure your experience is accurate spooled since it is something you have experimented with. I think I will take a good look and see if there is room for the smart tabs, your opinion of minimal room is accurate.
  17. max capacity= 4people or 1100lbs.....usually the 4 people are my wife and 2 younger sons (11,5) definetly not overloaded.. Do any of the so far naysayers have experience with smart tabs? A little bit of common sense tells me that if and when I may be overloaded that I am not too worried if I am up on plane or not. That would be just plain stupid. The boat is a StarCraft sf dlx for those who are interested. Cheers again M.M.
  18. I have a 25 h.p-2 stroke tiller with no electric trim on a 14 ft starcraft with a factory floor. With 2 guys and too much gear... it works awesome IMO. Gets up on plane in a hurry,n zips along at 30-32 m.p.h. Although put 4 of us in it and gear it will not come up on plane. I've tried the engine in all the positions, and it doesn't seem to make a difference. At put away this fall I turned it into a 30h.p. by die grinding the restriction to the carbureatur, which was a well documented mod, in hopes to help this no plane situation with a full boat. I was wondering if this mod doesn't help, would Smart Tabs make a difference? or are they not going to help? I'm maxed out on horsepower for the boats rating so I don't have any room to go bigger h.p. wise. I'm sure others have had this same problem and was looking for your experiences. Cheers M.M.
  19. Also adding to the debate as somewhat stated in previous posts, is , depending on the size of the motor, is the only part of a mercury, a mercury, is the sticker. I believe tohatsu builds everything under 40h.p. for them. And this sort of thing happens with a lot of the motors, where as they supply each other with different parts. Lower ends, power heads ......I'm sure someone can give us a real lesson on who is actually building what...and then sticking whatever sticker on the cowling. Again I am referring to the smaller motors. I know for certain my 25 hp mercury seahorse is 100%. Tohatsu and can not get parts at all at the local mercury dealer. So far all I wanted was a oil plug . It seems like a nice simple motor. (Very few parts) Even simpler than my 15. H.p yamaha that I can parts easily at the not so local dealer, even stickers from Japan in a week. It now looks like a 9.9 on the cowling. When I bought the 25 mercury from port colbourne, they said as I was walking out the door. "If it breaks, don't bring it back here" but 2 stroke is what I wanted and my choices were limited for a brand new 2 stroke.
  20. I can add this:, Your current roof will not be designed for the extra load. It will definitely need some alteration to take the added weight, It's a guarantee. Do not let someone say "it will be fine" and add the approx4-6 lbs p.s.f. Dead load. You would open yourself to disaster of liabilty in the event of a roof failure. Positively you would need a engineered stamp on the roof system "beefing up"". Again this is all protecting you from liability down the road or even the sale of the home in the future. Which does raise another question. What happens if you enter a rooftop system contract, and you have to sell the place. Are you limited to buyers that will "honor" the contract ?
  21. Fishmaster, your pm box must be full or something it won't accept messages.
  22. yeah, I saw that add. I tried to send a message and it wouldn't accept messages. I was hoping someone had first hand experience with someone or that person would respond to this post. I went musky fishing on LSC with this boards recommendations for a guide this summer and couldn't have been happier with the results. (good guy/great equipment) Bob Devine. and was hoping to luck out again. Also we already have a place to stay booked. Tulemar it looks pretty sweet aand don't want to change as there is no refund for the pre paid room. That's how they do it down in CR. Pay up front. Hence another reason I am looking for this boards reccomendations! Matt
  23. Taking the family to Costa Rica in March 2014, We will be on the pacific side with a rented car for 4 of the days. We will be staying in Manuel Antonio, which is quite close to Quepos , which is where there appears to be many charters out of. I was wondering if anyone had experienced a charter in Costa Rica and if they would recommend a particular provider. Offshore or even inshore for that matter! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all Matt
  24. Almost forgot to mention..you get paid a dividend on your share... Last year I got a penny. No joke
