Baseball Game Etiquitte-- What would you do???
Old Ironmaker replied to npt1's topic in General Discussion
They also paid $110.00 to have a good time. How they have it is up to them. I'm sorry they spoiled your day but they weren't drunk, fist fighting or smoking stupid stick. I'm sure you went to the old Ivor Wynne in Hamilton. If you got tickets in section 26 the action in the stands could be more entertaining than the Cats on the field. I can still hear the tinkle tink tinkle sound of an empty 26er of Wiser's Whisky roll down the concrete steps. -
Too late to help now I guess. Hope you had a great time. My former in laws had a cottage next door to Bear Lake Cottages. Great area. The Donavan's ran it then young Dan took it over. I hear it sold. I taught little Danny how to catch a Football. This time of year we found it tough to find Walleye. Usually fished South Bay for Pike especially if the wind was blowing. My favorite cottage at Bear Creek was the Rock Cottage. We always had a huge Thanksgiving there and a few couples rented the Rock Cottage so I didn't have to sleep in the truck, alone. That area is so beautiful my ex tells me many of the cousins moved to the area after retirement, a few earlier.

The wind was blowing hard from the south west, do you want it back my Buckeye pal? Yes the Pics are making their way west on the migration but they are still catching Walleye east of here. Normally at this time of year Walleye hunters need to find the Pics west of Long Point along the north shore to get any of those migratory fish but there are Pics still here and as I said even east of The Grand River. Very unusual to say the least. The sizes caught this year are averaging less than 3 pounds by my unscientific survey. In recent years and historically a 4 pounder would be the smallest in the box with most over 6. Limits were attainable but multiple limits were not often even for Charter guys .Very experienced folks would fish hard, all day and not limit out with 2 fishermen (persons). Could these Walleye still hanging around the eastern basin be local fish not in that annual migration? I hope so. When I say eastern basin I mean anything east of Long Point. I wanted to join a team Walleye challenge last week but couldn't. 4 of the guys went out in 1 boat last week and a buddy took out 3 of the gals in his boat. Bragging rights only. Only 1 of the ladies had ever longlined, 1 never fished before out of a boat. The girls brought in 18 nice Pics and a Rainbow. The boys limited out, nothing over 5 lbs. That's how good it is this year and my boat got wet on the bottom only once. I've had cash offers on the Bassassin but plan on making a big comeback in 2020. On this side of the lake Ohio they move deeper and deeper all summer. In Spring we hit 30 to 40 feet of water and they get deeper and deeper. But yes you are right in late August as temps drop they seem to get closer to shore. A few weeks ago in Nanticoke they were at 100 to 110 feet which is 10 to 11 miles from shore. Ted told me yesterday that they found them in 60 feet Friday. The downriggers and boards were not releasing so they checked them every 10 minutes and usually there was a small (2 or 3 pounder) Pic on. I have heard of fishermen coming to our area as far north as North Bay and as far east as Quinte to get in on this banner year for Pics. Plenty for all. Back to my Buffalo game, no not the Sabres!

Man that Cantina looks so familiar. When I was a kid my Father would take the 3 of us boys to Simcoe On. in his 59 Chevy Station wagon and fill the entire rear with bushels of Tomatoes and the 4 of us would drive back in the front seat. Guess what we did the next day? A return trip and the entire floor of the garage was full. Then because I was the oldest I helped do the tomatoes. I swore then I would never do Tomatoes when I grew up and only did a few jars once. I will buy an entire case of Passata when it's on sale at Food Basics. I know it's not the same but for me close enough.
-
Yep everyone here on the north shore is limiting out each trip but it won't be long before they may be gone deeper. Fishing 100 to 110 feet this week off of Nanticoke. Talk about Erie, we got our place powerwashed last evening with 10 to 15 footers crashing against the break wall. Chocolate milk as far as I can see today.

Fueling includes running the blower. Most probable cause but a good investigator must never go in thinking he already knows the root cause.
-
How does anyone here know it was improper fueling that caused the fires? I wish I had you guys when I worked at the steel plant and for the MOL, I wouldn't even have to initiate an investigation.

Soft Shell Crabs are no longer sold as bait. I'm not sure if it's illegal to use them. It really wasn't fair as they just hammered them, Large and Smallmouth Bass. We had neighbours that had 6 kids all about a year apart and they would catch them here under rocks close to shore. I paid them a dime for each crawfish. Then they wanted 25 cents and I fired them little shysters. The crabs here have a blue tinge to them so I used a blue Sharpie to tune up my hardware. -
Nice haul. But keep them elbows tucked in for the foto. And welcome aboard Slingfisher.

That's a good point about the saltiness of the ingredients. That's why I tell everyone no salt in the succo. It drives me bonkers when I serve someone food and the 1st thing they do without tasting it is reach for the salt and pepper. And I'm not shy to tell them it's disrespectful. No one listens to me anymore since I lost about 30 lbs of muscle. To be honest Smitty I have put black Kalamata olives in mine too. I guess over time I have forgotten to do it. Your putanessca succo sounds great. What time is dinner at Smitty's? Have you ever had or made Spaghetti l'alia ( sic) e olio? It's simply toasted garlic and EVO (extra virgin olive oil) cheese and bread crumbs. I add anchovies too, people don't even know they ate anchovies as they become liquified. Many southern Italian pasta dishes they add bread crumbs plus the cheese to help the sauces, non tomato, stick to the spaghetti, angel hair or spaghettini. My favorite pasta is angel hair, my wife despises it with a passion. When I toast garlic to a golden brown it's the only time I use a cold pan, cold oil then add the thin slices of garlic, not crushed and then put the heat to it. I will then remove the toasted garlic depending what I'm cooking in the pan so it doesn't keep cooking and then burn. For puttanesca I leave it in. No meat to brown. If you don't toast garlic try doing it. edit: as far as traditional dishes, there really isn't any. You may find in 1 household the Nona makes it different than the Momma and the daughter, or son may make it differently. Of course that are all right. I've seen arguments between "cooks" that I was sure fists were going to fly. And that's just the women fighting. My Mom saw my wife put a raw egg in her mashed potatoes years ago and told her make it over again.

The last time we got up to Point au Baril it was mid Sept. The afternoon we got there it was 75F, the next AM it dropped 20 degrees and the Smallies were not co operative. Switched to trolling bricks and did manage to boat 3 Musky though.
-
Why do you rince the anchovies Smitty. I pour the oil into the pan on top of the garlic. The recipe sounds great but you can't call it putanesca succo. Putanesca is fast, hot and easy just like the girls of the evening when they get off their feet, or backs.

any rule changes to port hope area fishing
Old Ironmaker replied to huzzsaba's topic in General Discussion
Huzz I don't know anyone that has failed their boating permit test yet. Especially online. I'm not sure if a 20 pounder will tow you but a 30 may take you to NY. -

Old Ironmaker replied to huzzsaba's topic in General Discussion
Huzz, ya gotta buy my boat. It's all ready for trolling out there. I might even throw in a rod or 2. Then you can take me fishing. -
In the old days trainers said you should eat a steak on game day. Then guys puked on the sidelines. Then it' was "carb up." Still is.

There is no putannesca sauce without the capers. You don't put a jar full in maybe a dozen. Bri, you can put whatever you want in it or don't and then name it.
-
Of course I do and no nothing much is too strong or hot for me. Edit: maybe a young woman. A while back I posted my recipe. Do you know what Puttanesca means? It is said the street walkers in Rome wanted something to eat after their shift. Something quick, hot and easy. Just like them. Puttana means checkout girl in Italian. Mine has garlic, anchovies, capers, pepper flakes and tomatoes. No salt. The sauce is done as soon as the spaghetti is done. edit: puttana does not mean check out girl in Italian. Man this auto thing here is weird. I once typed "Killed a Musky" and it changed it to "Killed a Muslim."

Lots of bulk spices you pay an arm and a leg for from McCormicks. I buy Croatian sausages there called Chevap or Chevapcici (sic). Little no skin sausages, man they are good on the BBQ. Combo's of Beef, Lamb and Pork. Traditionally served with raw green onions and a yogurt dip, we use Tzaziki. 1st had them at a stag and been eating them for the last 30 yrs. I've never found them anywhere else. You all got to try them. At the counter they sell in store made fried Pork rinds, I'll grab 6 and scarf them down before I get home and destroy all the evidence before Tich finds out. Punjabi Market has food I have never seen before. All sorts of pickled and veggies in oil, some good some bad, one jar tastes and smells like turpentine. Big world out there.

Hurricane Dorian ready to hit FLA
Old Ironmaker replied to Old Ironmaker's topic in General Discussion
That's what they call those windows. My sis in law is giving 1/2 hr. updates from Fla. I think the anticipation of what might happen can be stressful to say the least. Especially when the thing is moving at a snails pace of 1 MPH. They have been down there for 26 years now and still haven't bought a genny. Why not is beyond me. More important to that B-I-L of mine to buy Armani suits and wear a Rolex that doesn't work. I swear he's brain dead. She earned her M.D. at 55, works all day at the hospital and teaches at night. Balance of rant deleted but it sure felt good writing it. -
Little Buddy saves dead Goby's for his mousers on the farm. They can't get enough. For a second I thought , man those US Walleye are ugly. Good reading Ohio, thanks.

If anyone is looking for the real deal Hungarian Paprika cheap go to Punjabi Market on Queenston Rd. and Centennial Parkway in Hamilton. Kiddy corner from Eastgate Square. They sell both smoked and sweet in bulk and in the cans. Nowhere as expensive than the big stores. While you are there pick up some Hungarian Papricash in the bag. I know not home made but eesey peesy and good with cubed pork. The instructions will make you laugh. Cook pork, add content, add 750 ml water cook more add noodle. Racking my brain today to figure out what to make for supper. Spaghetti Carbonara last night, hard to beat. Ordered Chinese and my wife picked it up on her way home. When in doubt order out.

Tecumseh Reef still good for smallie?
Old Ironmaker replied to GaraldT's topic in General Discussion
The water was up to the grass a few weeks ago. I figured it could be done but someone would have to get in the water. I have enough of a hard time getting into the new rather high bed my wife bought let alone climbing up a ladder into the boat. -
Hurricane Dorian ready to hit FLA
Old Ironmaker replied to Old Ironmaker's topic in General Discussion
There building codes are much different than ours. Hurricane bracing on all the exterior walls, higher rated windows and doors, screws for dimensional lumber are not allowed. Only spiral nails. Roofs are bolted to the top plates and plates are required on the lumber tying the top wall plates with the vertical wall studs as well as the sil plates. Many other differences as well. We should build up here like they do but the cost would be prohibitive. We didn't have roll down shutters at the condo in Port Charlotte but the horizontal panes of glass in the Lanai (screen room) that you are able to open and close had to be 1/2 thick at least. It was strange watching them dig the footings for the foundation. A guy used a square mouth shovel and dug down in the sand about 10", any deeper and they hit water. A bit of stone on the sand tamped down and donezo pour the concrete 8" deep. They might work until 11 AM then back at 2 for a few hours, maybe. Some contractors picked their laborers from the many guys at Home Depot standing out front hoping to get a job for the day. They are paid peanuts and not treated well at all. -

You had a great day Steve way to go Man. Nice one's 20 plus inches. Did they spit up any baitfish? And you are right sometimes all it takes for them to get on the feed bag is the wind to pick up or die down, overcast then sunny or a change in wind direction. I'd love to know how in heck you launched at Austin's? So it's doable.
