Pickerel stocking on Nipissing axed
Old Ironmaker replied to woodenboater's topic in General Discussion
Great discussion all. I posted earlier here that I believed the reason the ministry denied the group permission to stock was the concern over introducing VHS disease into the fishery. Maybe maybe not. What I do read here is a repeating opinion that the lack of enforcement by the MNR as a problem. Going to the root cause it wouldn't be a lack of enforcement it would in fact be those individuals keeping more than 2 walleye a day. We always think of poachers as someone netting, spearing, trapping and using explosives to get dozens or hundreds of fish at a single time. If a sports fisherman keeps only 1 more fish than allowed per day, for any reason, that person is simply a poacher. Be it when limits were 6 and no slot size or now. -
Know didly squat about boats that can do 70 mph, but can tell you that if my cousin in his 20 foot Ranger and 250 Merc and I decide to head to a spot a few miles away when there's a 2-3 foot chop I will get there in my deep V and 115HP before him. I'm usually fishing before he arrives because he has to, lock all 10 of his rods away, batten down anything that can go flying at 50mph, cooler, tackle, net, jackets, tighten all the gimbals on electronics, etc........ I guess it depends on what body of water one spends most of the time on, I'm on Erie, don't know anyone local that would consider a bass boat. Have seen a few guys come on shore and kiss the ground after arriving alive, and not just with bass boats.

Steve, When is this derby on? Now that we have lost our little newspaper we have no idea what going on at your end of Rainham Rd. How about I check the website, duh. And where's my boat keys? Johnny D -
Thank you sir. Salty, You said, "Go to bps or any marina close to you." I'm shopping for new deep cell batteries, what is bps? And why no CTC battery? Most no name batteries ie Nautilus are made by Johnson Controls, I'm being steered towards Kirkland brand from Costco by a few folks here, as does captpierre who just posted. Kirkland is Costco's generic brand, named after where their headquarters are in Kirkland Washington. Costco doesn't have a battery factory either and guess who makes Kirkland, Johnson Controls, same company that makes Canadian Tire brand and Walmart batteries and many others as well.

Another new victim to mess with, whoooha. Just kidding Mike you will enjoy your time with us, a real great group of folks and no Bull info and carrying on. Someone recently said everyone loves pics here, I still need to get a Fliker account to post pics. Looking forward to see some of your monster bucket mouths and bronzbacks. I'm a Lake Erie bass guy myself. I don't even know what a trout looks like and thought salmon comes in a can. Welcome Mike.

Pickerel stocking on Nipissing axed
Old Ironmaker replied to woodenboater's topic in General Discussion
I have to add, it is best to leave the science to the scientists and the fishing to the fisherman. Notwithstanding however much needed input from us is most important, look at the success seen over the years with salmon and trout programs that only became successful after guys like Daryl Chronzie,(sic) and others became involved. But after reading further about the importance of laboratory conditions I don't believe a few well intentioned individuals should be doing any lab work, without at least under the MNR's stringent supervision. -

One of the most successful stocking programs for Walleye is in the state of Minnesota according to the article below. Over 3 million dollars annually is earmarked for the program by the state. Follow this link for what one would consider a successful program. They stock hundreds of lakes that won't support natural reproduction solely for the purpose of sport fishing. http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/volunteer/mayjun11/walleye.html If we are going to have a debate lets do it with some facts not rhetoric. Now I'll look for a site that says walleye stocking doesn't work. Within 15 minutes I came across this article from Michigan. A good simple read as well clearly explaining why they have suspended stocking efforts for walleye in neighboring Michigan. The introduction of VHS from lab invitro fertilization. The 2013 Ontario Fishing Regs talk a out VHS diseased fish, basically the fish bleeds to death internally. I'm sure the MNR faces the same risks associated with disease introduction into the wild. I don't want them stocking walleye either if it can effect an entire species of fish across the province. Thank you to Michigan for being cautious as we share large aquatic borders that fish cross with regularity. http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,4570,7-153-10366_46403_63473-234576--,00.html The Nipissing article states, quote Their proposal to the MNR was to harvest 200 million eggs. Nelson says they were told it was too large a take in the event of a catastrophic failure that could have a negative impact on the natural spawn. Catastrophic failure is not defined, I'm sure that definition from the ministry would explain much as to why not, and I'm sure it was described in detail to the proposed stocking group that wasn't passed on to the reporter. -
Boat launching conditions Haldimand Norfork/ report
Old Ironmaker replied to Old Ironmaker's topic in General Discussion
Rich, Where's the municipal marina? I know the Port Dover Yacht club, the gates chain locked. -
Welcome aboard, now I'm not the rookie here. I think you will find your time here special, especially if you have been a member of other forums. It can at times seem like a koombuya love in but that's better than all out internet rage. Which can be entertaining as well....... but thankfully not here.

The water levels here on Erie are lower than they were last November and then just had enough to float the boat off without running out of dock, so I'm going to have to do some pre launch dock inspections tomorrow along the Grand. The public dock in Cayuga is closed due to replacing the bridge over the river, looks like it will be most of the summer as well. The Island marina at the Dunnville bridge is locked up as it is for sale again, 1.5 million and it's yours, includes mini put course. Went out Turkey Point way Good Friday and worked back to Nanticoke checking everything between and found nothing open other than Hoovers or water levels so low would need a ladder to get into the barge. Hoovers is useable. Marina still closed though, no gas etc. All the dock walls show a water line approx. 20 inches lower than last water mark. Does anyone know if the private marinas along the Lynn in Dover let you launch in the spring? I know they aren't open to the public in the summer due to parking, or are they? Happy Easter all.

I'm jealous, some time this week I hope. Isn't it always the same on the first run every year, had all winter to get ready and it never fails to forget something very important, like leaving all the rods in the truck after making the 5 mile run down the river to the lake and before opening the rod locker realizing Oh no !!!!!!!!!!!!! The water levels here on Erie are lower than they were last November and then just had enough to float the boat off without running out of dock, so I'm going to have to do some pre launch dock inspections tomorrow. I should start a new thread. Hoovers is useable. Marina still closed though, no gas etc. If anyone out this way wants to head out let me know, my regular net minder is incarcerated, (on a job site). Spincast, looks like 50 point marina, haven't been there for many years. If anyone wants to sleep on my boat I'm more than happy to use his rigs, that's 2 more rods for me.

I love free WFN but I can't watch this show
Old Ironmaker replied to Cudz's topic in General Discussion
I think most have outgrown the half hour infomercials as well. Watching an overfed guy with more logos on his shirt than a Nascar body reel in a fish is getting old. I find myself screaming at the screen What are you using ??????? Either all they talk about is the lure or nothing at all, must be a somewhere in between. If I hear Italo explain which fingers of which hand he is using to remove a hook one more time I'm going to upchuck, right Barb honey? And I still watch, oh my. -
Don't pay him, he'll never come back.

Those slabs are ridiculous. Good on you. Happy Easter all.
-
Not that simple, all Hamilton hospitals have an agreement with the city concerning parking. Same ramifications for not paying as if you parked illegally in front of City Hall. If on a private lot like Shoppers Drug Mart the police won't ticket on private property but the store can have your car towed for many many reasons. Same as parking at a disabled spot on private property, police won't ticket but your vehicle might not be there when you get back.

Hardwater season SKUNK report... Somebody pinch me...
Old Ironmaker replied to Leecher's topic in General Discussion
What a difference a few decades can make. Here I sit on a Saturday night, watching for the Easter Bunny, watching my dear wife watching TV, watching the cat watch me watching my wife watching TV, and me watching a video watching a guy not catch fish. Oh my. I miss the discos, and my fishing. If the stores were open tomorrow I'd be in line to buy a new boat battery. I need some professional help, soon, and a battery. -
No that's not funny, dear wife might buy it for my 60th and think it's a good deal.

The last time I heard Beansie was living in Miami. Oops, different Beansie, that one's from The Sopranos, hope your felling better soon fellow angler. When I hear the word catheter I cringe.

Irish, I know a few years back there was parking exemptions for someone such as yourself that needed to be there for longer term visits. Depends on the hospital and jurisdiction I imagine, TO not being one of them. I was driving a dear fiends wife to TO from here to Mt. Sinai for bi-monthly post surgical check ups. 3 hours one way on a good day. Then she was told that The Canadian Cancer Society will provide transportation which she now takes advantage of. I wonder if they could help you out? I don't know your situation as I'm only a net attendant but I hope all is well.

If there is a way for our lawmakers to generate a buck for the public coffers they will do it. Raising taxes and generating user fees is a lot easier then coming up with a novel solution, something like freezing their wages and pensions, eliminating their expense accounts for food, gifts, sundries, travel to fundraisers, taxable deductions that we don't get and entertainment. I think if I had the time and energy I could fill this page of things our elected and non-elected officials get that we don't. Oh don't get me going sir.

I think many have been hammered by parking tickets when dealing with an emergency at or near the hospital. Recently received a $75.00 ticket at Hamilton General when I parked illegally at a meter to take care of Dad when Mom was rushed to emergency at 3 AM. I had the administration there make a copy of the admitting documentation as well as the ambulance report with the date and time on it, went to the by law office next to Hamilton Place and pled my case to the clerk there. If you have a reason as well documentation to prove your case most all parking authorities can be reasonable if you are. They quashed the ticket and told me if it happens again, and they know it, I will have to pay. Take the ticket in with some documentation and explain, don't have anything to lose. As far as gouging for revenue, what else is new. Tayzak, charging to enter the city core is nothing new around the world. It was $100.00 cdn in 1995 to enter downtown Tokyo. A very good incentive to take public transit or a cab, their purpose was not to generate revenue but to encourage public transit. Regularly done in Europe as well, we don't see it as tourists but the locals will sure tell you about it.

Hey Rick, they just announced that perch quotas for commercial guys in Ontario has been reduced by 10% for this year. If you left 10% of your haul for guys like me who have to wait for ice out would be very gentlemanly of you. That's a beauty mess of yellows you have there, good going.

I currently run 2 12V deep cycles marine batteries in tandem to power 55lb MotorGuide front mount trolling motor. The unit is floor pedal wireless remote control circa 1996. Have problems maintaining a good charge, lasted a few hours 2 seasons ago and now less than an hour and the remote isn't doing what it was designed to do. Unit rotates on command but is unresponsive for motor to start and stop without pushing the start button more than a few times. Batteries are 11 years old, I'm pretty sure they're done, bringing them in Monday for charge test. Trolling motor may have seen better days as well. Can't seem to get any answers for MotorGuide other than buy a new one please, a new 24V unit isn't in the budget right now. Might mention boat is 19.5' deep v Starcraft, full windscreen, 115HP Merc. From what I know 12V probably won't move the barge well. 55lb was probably max back in 96'. My questions are, if I need new batteries any recommendations? Does anyone know of someone in Ontario, GTA/Niagara/London, that might service MotorGuide? When charging should I select 5, 10 or 15 amp? I don't disconnect the cables that put them in tandem, charge each while connected to one another, make a difference? What is the difference between deep cycle and gel batteries,? never had a gel battery. Thanks for any replies, thought I'd ask now before everyone is out on the water.
