Although the "official" search has been called off by the OPP there is a group of citizens that will be doing their own searches along the shoreline using drones and when weather permits boats with side scan sonar. I look up and down the shore with binoculars a few times a day and every time I see something in the water that shouldn't be there my heart skips a beat. There is a Go Fund me page if anyone is interested. https://www.gofundme.com/f/ptkrbv-alex-the-great-hero

I'm sorry to hear that Paul. I read the Wiki description, Wikipedia is known to have a lot of mis information in their descriptions. In my experience young people are getting diseases today much earlier than in the past. I can't quantify that statement but just sitting in the Oncologists waiting room or the cancer treatment centre in London I drove a buddy to almost 1/2 of the patients look to be under 40. An entire generation weened on fast food, processed food and microwaves.

Cooks bay 2nd line of innisfil street parking
Old Ironmaker replied to huzzsaba's topic in General Discussion
12 cars! How many fishermen? Rent a couple of those 12 person vans for the day. With fuel for that convoy with parking costs and problems it might be less to rent 2 vans, if that's enough. 12 cars, Wowza. -

I don't disagree Paul, this has been a discussion that has taken place over a beer at the local watering holes for decades. I don't know the answer, if I did I would be in Parliament or Queens Park. The commercial guys argument is they do not harm the sport fishery and they bring in millions in revenue into our country from overseas sales. Japan being their prime market. -

We need to keep this thread alive. 10 years since Wayne first posted it and an inspiration to us all. Just yesterday we found out a close friend that beat Non Hodgkin's Lymphoma 5 years ago she told me that it is back. F the C word. -

You are welcome anytime. When they are on 3 fish will fill a big cooler!!!!!! We have had 6 fish coming in at 40 lbs. Actually sizes were down last year but everyone was limiting out. 1st time I have ever heard in the over 35 years fishing for them on Erie fishermen were culling limits. -
Divers were in the water today and choppers out scouring the shoreline. Visibility is zero, divers search with their hands. I said it before you couldn't pay me enough and some of these divers are volunteer firefighters. I have walked the shoreline east and west searching as far as it was walkable. We get huge moguls here on shore that make walking impossible. I just can not imagine what his family is going through as well as his sister who was the last to see him in the water before he went under and his pal who Alex went into the water to get him out. Yes their are many people in the last week that have lost their lives but this is very close to home. We live in an area that geographically is large but only 45,000 citizens here. Just today I was at the dentists and the dental assistant knows the social worker helping the sister and young fellow that Alex went into the water to help get out. They are both suffering badly. It puts my aches and pains into perspective compared to theirs.

1st Brian I have to tell you there is no such thing as a 15 1/4 inch Perch. How do I know that? There is or was a charter guy that fished the west side of Long Point and he said so. I called him out and he went all social media physco on me, he wanted to know where I live so he can come and beat me up and worse. I passed it on to our local constabulary, a death threat is a death treat no matter in person or online, the man is nuts. I never heard anything more, he was booted from the website and no longer saw his website online. It can be crazy here on innerweb land. That is a nice feed of Yellows you have there. In a restaurant in Port Dover that platter of Perch will set you back over 50 bucks. If one more person tells me Perch tastes like Chicken I'm going to sell them breaded Chicken fingers for 18 bucks a pound and tell them it's Perch. The last I looked last years frozen Perch was going for 20 bucks a pound, wowzah. Walleye about the same. Smoked Whitefish around 15.

The Angry Net Man - A fishing confession
Old Ironmaker replied to gordy28's topic in General Discussion
More than a few times I have told my 1st mate when I had a big Walleye on that was a netting novice that "if you touch that net I am going to knock you out." Not good for one to enhance self esteem in your net man. I can honestly say I have lost 3 fish because my line broke off. Drag on too tight my 1st time using a spinning reel I borrowed from my brother turned upside down because I'm left handed, the 2nd my knot broke fishing the Maitland River near Wingham for Smallies and the 3rd when I was playing with an ultra lite and I hooked up with a big Farm Animal (sheepshead) at the Hydro station at Nanticoke on Erie. I once acted like a Jack Wad trying my best to knock off a buddies 4th big Rainbow of the day fishing Lake Bernard and I was on the net, he was the only one in the boat with 3 of us that hooked up that day. I thought he was going to have a stroke screaming at me. I finally netted it. Why do that? He is a guy that throws nickels around like manhole covers and every fish he ever caught went in the freezer to take home and ate all the food we went to work for bought and cooked for him, he was a professional unemployed citizen but an excellent fisherman, one of the best I have ever fished with. Either on Comp or EI and bragged about ripping off the Gov. Where did he think the Gov. came up with the money to pay the lout? From you and I that's where. Now he is 65 and his CPP is around 100 bucks a month. Too bad so sad. Where was I? Sorry all, I'm all ranted out, thanks. -

If you ever get this way Capt. I will gladly have you out as my 1st mate. I have to warn you long lining is the most boring fishing I have ever done. It makes up for it when you have a 9 pounder on the end of your line as long as it doesn't turn out to be a farm animal, code words for Sheepshead. I hate them critters that impersonate a Pic. -

I've seen the commercial boats come in at Port Dover just packed full of big Pickerel and Perch. Sad in many ways but those guys need to make a living too, I get that. No commercial fishing on the US side of Erie for many years now. I don't know about the other Great Lakes we share a border with. -
There are so many to choose from. What's your budget? American plan or fend for yourself? Need a boat? I actually would steer you towards the Ottawa river downriver of Pembroke part of the Ottawa Valley. It's beautiful country and it's like having an entire lake to yourself. If you are into it you can go white water rafting a few miles down river. That area is where a few of us boys from Hamilton had a hunting/fish camp in the 80's and a couple of guys and their wives moved to after retirement and they tell me it's still a Walleye factory without slot limits. Loaded with Small Mouth Bass and Northerns too as a bonus. Many to choose from do a Google search. edit: cheap Beer and groceries across the bridge in Quebec too. We paid 5 grand for the camp on Crown Land. The best 1000 bucks I ever spent.

Exactly captainpierre. Many polls have Erie as #1 in the world. Bay of Quinte, yes. I've never fished for Pics west but there are thousands of Walleye factories in Ontario. They should take their Ontario Outdoors Cards from these 2 imposters. Blasphemy I say, blasphemy. -
Way back in 2011 when I pulled the trigger for my 1st brand new vehicle I've ever bought for myself in the 40 years (I lie, my wonderful wife bought it for me) I have been buying cars, bikes and trucks the sales manager let us take a demonstrator over night to test drive, not the 1st time that has been done by me. The biggest financial investment a working person will make is buying a home. I've always said we get to test drive a vehicle but after a 30 minute walk around we have to decide to make the biggest purchase in our lives. I suggested to an agent years ago that a perspective buyer should be able to spend a night in the home, they have started to do just that for real estate, about time. I don't know how it works but it's being done and I would be open to it as we have our joint on the market.

I know nothing about Argo's except they haven't made the playoffs for a few years. The question I have is that you mentioned being able to drive a ATV on the shoulder of the road. I know it's illegal here in Haldimand county. How do I know? My next door neighbour got a ticket for it. The OPP were out in force in cottage country here on Erie and they had a zero tolerance day. They were ticketing golf carts as well. No plate, no drive. Some weekends out here there are more golf carts and ATV's on the road than cars.

Worst vehicle you ever owned
Old Ironmaker replied to AKRISONER's topic in Non-Outdoors Open Discussion
Come to think of it one of the worse cars was one of my favorites if that's possible. Bought a 1979 Audi 5000S with less than 10,000 miles on it early in January 1980. Managers car so they said. I think I paid for the car twice after all that went wrong with it. Timing chain or belt went and threw a rod, frame cracked at the rear wheel well. That's when I saw my 1st ever car without a frame, unibody. I went through alternators and starters like eating peanuts, same as struts and CV joints. I eventually found out from a honest mechanic many VW parts fit that Audi at less than 1/2 the price of Audi's parts.. A man that worked for me son was his apprentice and told his dad to tell me the mechanic cleaned up my starter and sold it to me for full hop Audi part price. 1 wire was loose. That pr*(K. He got what was coming to him believe me. It was one of the 1st front wheel drives available. It sucked up the road like a Hoover, handling and top end speed was phenomenal, 5 cylinder engine. Even heated seats in 79', unheard of then. Back in those days you would find a good guy and they were good and honest for a while then they ripped you off. Those guys didn't last long, no internet but it was a small town in the big city. News travelled fast. -
Good CHEAP USED 4 x 4 SUVs or pick ups?
Old Ironmaker replied to Hack_Fisherman's topic in Non-Outdoors Open Discussion
What truck Dan? I don't see it here. A friend is looking for a good used 4X4 or AWD. 1 3/4's drive to London. I love brokering deals, actually used to get paid for it. Now I work for lunches at A&W. Found it in classifieds, who would ever think to look there? I'll pass the link on Dan. I always say "Never buy a used car a mechanic drove but definitely buy from one from his wife." You know what I mean. -

I don't know about Chrysler but my GM warranty specifically states a qualified tech that GM recognizes, not necessarily GM, must do all the service on the vehicle while it's under warranty. -

Old Ironmaker replied to AKRISONER's topic in Non-Outdoors Open Discussion
I have come to learn all the service guys doing the work at a Chrysler dealership are sub contractors not Chrysler employees per say and not unionized. Chrysler pays them X number of dollars for Y amount of time they say it takes to do the job and they get paid for that time only whether it takes longer or not. Same goes if it takes them less time, that creates a problem when a tech flies through a job. That price for an oil change is unbelievable. That extra 210 bucks is for the 4 big screen TV's, WiFi and the fancy desks 4 service people sit at as well as the big fancy showrooms with marble countertops and porcelain flooring. Think that stuff is free? Any warranty is voided if you change the oil yourself unless you are a certified tech. -

Old Ironmaker replied to Hack_Fisherman's topic in Non-Outdoors Open Discussion
You will find something. I have never owned a Toyota which is probably the only brand I haven't owned at one time or another. I do know they are solid as a rock. When ever you see a video of people in 3rd world countries driving they are in and or on a Toyota with a 30 caliber mounted on it. Both the good guys and the bad guys. -

You aren't going to get a low mileage vehicle that is over 10 years old in your budget. You should repost this when you are ready to pull the trigger. Good used vehicles don't last long before someone buys it. Spring is around the corner. I don't mind car and boat shopping especially with someone elses money. Now my screen is covered in Jeeps for sale. -

When the Silverado was brand new my wife had it and the low tire pressure light came on. There is a sticker on the window that says the tires have Nitrogen and stop in at any GM dealer to get them topped up free of charge. She did just that and they laughed at her, they don't have nitrogen there. They have a fancy customer waiting room complete with bug screen TV's that tell you where your vehicle is and how long left to service and WiFi with 4 service people sitting at their fancy desks but zero nitrogen. I was getting all my warranty service done there that GM pays them for as well as oil service at 90 bucks a pop. I went in and waved them bye, bye. The service manager couldn't apologize enough but I never went back. They sent me multiple requests to go back with some deals, too late John Bear Hamilton Mountain. That's how you show displeasure at a dealer, take their money away. -
I had the pleasure of spending a day in a Service Canada office in Simcoe last month. They screwed up my OAS pension. There was exactly 1 person at her desk to deal with 20 people in line. After each time she finished with a customer she disappeared in the back for 5 to 10 mins. I had to return but got smart that time, they close for lunch until 12:30. I was outside the office with my coffee and Tim Bits listening to music in my comfy truck at 12:15 and was 1st in line at 12:29. In and out in 10 minutes. I remember the 3 bills of sale thing here a few years back. Not sure what the advantage is. Maybe for insurance purposes is all that comes to mind.

Had some time so I search Kijiji and below is a Jeep Turbo diesel for sale like Albert suggested for under 9 grand. 300 Kms but that isn't much for a diesel I think. I've always liked the design of the Cherokees and was in the market for one when I was doing a ton of driving, some weeks well over 1000 kms. That was until I saw the fuel mileage they get, not great at all. Maybe diesel is better. I am looking at selling the Silverado after we move, my reno days are over. I would consider this Jeep just to tow the boat to and from the water and use if snow was an issue and getting out was a must. https://www.kijijiautos.ca/vip/13576668/ I just looked at the pics of this Jeep. Man it's loaded with leather and wood interior and a huge dash screen. Maybe I should look at it for myself. I could sell mine and buy that and put a chunk of change in the bank after I bought some toys like a big new GPS/Combo for the boat and new 100 lb thrust electric. It has me thinking.
