Show us a pic of your fishing boat
Old Ironmaker replied to Old Ironmaker's topic in General Discussion
Thanks pal. We took a core sample from the rear of the boat where it seemed mushy, the iso styrene closed cell floated. So not too much damage, yet. We are making a game plan going forward to deal with the leak(s) are. I say we because I have gifted 50% ownership to a friend I have known since the very 1st day of high school. He thinks he owes me 5K. You were here when we were doing a remodel of the cottage. He wouldn't take a penny and did most of the work with his guys that I know he paid. Imagine I know the man for 52 years and still can't get rid of him. He might as well own the boat because 99% of the time he is with me on her fishing anyway, he might as well chip in a bit now. I filled her up yesterday from MT as well as 5@20 liters of high octane fuel for 91.9 cents a liter normally $1.30 or higher around here and even more at the marina's. I bought the last 4@20 lt. gas cans at CTC. The CTC store website said zero in stock, yea right. -
What makes a good fishing partner?
Old Ironmaker replied to LostAnotherOne's topic in General Discussion
My best fishing partner is someone that knows what they are doing without my help. Someone that I will talk their ear off and not vocalize their frustration for being cut off in mid sentence. My absolute best fishing partner ever was the one that doesn't mind putting up with me for a few hours on the boat then at the end of the day lets me sleep with her. -
Need Someone Willing to Drive Boat Under Cover of Darkness

Marty, you know us Canucks are always willing to help in any way we can. Especially when it will put cash in our Jeans. -
17", why not take a pic of that beast next to a tape measure like many do for trophy fish before released. I don't want to be pessimistic but that guy wasn't doing the elbow tuck. Regardless it is scary huge. edit: I did a unscientific experiment. Assuming the guy is of average height and his arms are pointed straight out from his body I measured the distance from my 2 index fingerswith my arms held out straight from my body which I measure it to be 12". The guys right index finger looks to be 1" from the fishes mouth so +1"=13". The mans left hand index or ring finger is under the fishes anal fin so I would add another 4" from the anal fin to the tail pinched together. Guess what? That massive Yellow Perch measures 17"!!!!! I take my naysaying back. It's a 17" grotesque Perch.

We live on the Canuck shore of Lake Erie. I can meet you 1/2 way. I'll bring the dingy and troll you 6 feet behind my boat. Once you get here you are on your own. For me to become a Coyote it will cost you 25 grand USD. -

It can't come early enough. If the Nanticoke Hydro station was still there we would fish It. Erie has been like glass for the past week. Silver Bass would be on fire with these water temps, just above 0C. Perch should be in around us soon. Fishing in the boat for a few hours beats watching that stupid tube or re reading novels .I actually was down to reading old High School Year Books. I think I have watched every movie out except Frozen 2. Is it any good? -
A non Corona Virus discussion, imagine that..
Old Ironmaker replied to Old Ironmaker's topic in Non-Outdoors Open Discussion
Yep Akrisoner, the only job where you can be dead wrong 1/2 the time and not get fired is a Weatherman or girl. I'll add people that put together the Farmers Almanac to that list. It wasn't as wet along the Erie shoreline as the rest of Ontario this year but many times I commented thank goodness it isn't cold or we would be snowed in. -
Thank you Gerrit. It's fairly clear, sort of. Why producing steel is an essential service when other manufacturing isn't beats me. Pics, you have rights and I know that you know what they are.

I need to talk about something other than this Pandemic. I have Corona Virus overdose. It's about all my wife and I as well as family and friends talk about., text, email, twitter of Facebook, any other ways to communicate these days, I'm sure there are more ways. . I knew how to email and now know how to text. And 99% of the time it is Covid 19 related. Which is a good thing in ways. My God Daughter is a real hoot. She texted me to ask how I am doing as I am the oldest person she knows!!!!! Funny girl she is. She writes for Yahoo. she's their entertainment, pop culture editor. Look at her stuff, she 's good. They sent her to NYC to interview Wonder Woman in January. I would pay my own freight if I could meet Wonder Woman. Google Elizabeth DiFilippo, Yahoo.ca. If this should not be here Art please delete. So let's talk about the weather. How bout that so called winter we had. The Farmer's Almanac called for abnormally cold temperatures and heavy snow. It was the opposite. I wore my winter coat a few times and that was it. I shovelled about 1" of snow from the walkway once. We live on a private laneway and our snow removal guy didn't touch it not once. We have a 4 plus car driveway and it wasn't touched once either. I know it was tough for ice guys but you did eventually get good ice in some places. Not the usual 4" on New Years Day. I know my snow removal guy had a bad season as there wasn't any snow to speak of. He told me the only money he made was from our contract with him, snow or no snow., all he does is complain about how poor he is, from the drivers side of his new $60,000.00 Ram Hemi. Some years in March there is 5 feet or more of dirty snow on the side of the roads, our Day Lilly's are 3" high. I called him to roll the lawn, unheard of here in March. It's dry as well. Last year it looked like we live on an island in a big pond. How's the weather folks?

I don't want to get into a p&^^ing contest here I just want to get the facts right. Being laid off is dismissal. Like I said earlier on this forum there is no such thing as a temporary lay off, when you get that pink slip or whatever colour they are today is a dismissal, termination without cause, unless you have a collective bargaining agreement (CBA) clause or contract that supersedes the law in Ontario. I'll try to contact Ed Canning out of Hamilton tomorrow and find out what's what. It's very important to my wife to know exactly her rights. 30 years of service without a defined pension plan. I posted here earlier that I recommend Ed Canning in Hamilton and Lior Samfiru in the GTA if anyone had labour related questions. I listen to Mr. Samfiru's broadcast when I can and have called in a few times myself. I have learned much listening to Samfiru even with my 25 plus years dealing with what we called Industrial Relations now called H.R. I've been out of the loop for years. Never too late to learn. As far as the LCBO or The Beer Stores closing that would put a strain on our already tapped out health care system. Alcoholism is a disease and one just doesn't stop drinking cold turkey. They would be one of the last to shut down I predict.

OK I'm getting hungry now looking at all those viddles. Chrimsontide where do live? As soon as the border is open I'm coming down so you can show me how to make that real deal Gulf coast Shrimp and Grits bake. Of course I love both. Got a gumbo recipe you can share? . We aren't exactly rationing but I'm being very frugal cooking to lessen our trips to the grocers. Just yesterday I cooked up a pot of Corned beef and cabbage. I add onions, potatoes and carrots to it and thicken up with cornstarch rue. All trimmings of the veggies went into a pot with the 2 chicken backs I saved and now have 2 large containers of healthy stock. I always say I should do that but forget to. We have 24 cans of tomatoes and a tote full of pasta and a few pounds of parmesan. We are good for months. I could eat pasta every day. My Uncle had pasta 7 days a week. Blood sugar levels be dammed.

From Lior Samfiru's website as it pertains to workers rights during this pandemic. "In the event that an employee is let go or fired from their job as a consequence of the coronavirus pandemic, their dismissal will likely be considered a termination without cause. That employee will still be owed full severance pay under common law." So yes at this time any employee that is laid off in Ontario is eligible for full severance pay. Read his full statement below. From the horses mouth. But it was March 5th, I can't find anything that is different today. The best way to get the real info we need at this time, actually any time is from the source so as to not start rumours. That was today, tomorrow it may change but for now my wife if laid off will get a severance package. If anyone is sent home with a reduction in pay they can demand a layoff. We had a similar situation during a strike at my plant in the 90's. Salaried employees were sent home with 65% salary until further notice. 65% salary in some cases was below what that employee would get on what was then U.I. I am going to try and call his office tomorrow, but I bet the phones are ringing off the hook. https://stlawyers.ca/blog-news/what-are-an-employees-rights-during-a-coronavirus-outbreak/

I Googled home made hand sanitizer recipes and there are several. Alcohol is the main ingredient at 98%. There have been several warnings about making home made hand sanitizer. I read that children can get alcohol poisoning using home made. You Tube has several recipes online. The experts warn against it for many reasons. I am not going to make any. Below is just 1 article warning not to try it. https://www.healthline.com/health-news/coronavirus-hand-sanitizer-recipes-risks

I also listen to Lior Samfiru and called his office a few years ago and got a free consult from one of his staff. He knows his stuff.

That much ice Brian? Not a single cube here on Erie. We have perch too, just hard to find in April. I will take a drive and see where all the boats are jammed up like the 401 when it had traffic. HTHM and I went one spring and did well. Might have been in May. Had to be 50 boats jammed next to one another outside Burwell or was it Bruce?

So he's the guy that bought them all. -
My nephew is a Paramedic in Niagara. Many are working without protective equipment. I think they are exempt from the Ontario H&S Act of 1978 for the right to refuse unsafe work. Same for Police, Fire and front line health workers unless it's changed in the last 15 years when I worked for the MOL. I personally have 2 Comfo 2 masks and cartridges that are probably out of date. Better than a scarf if I need it.

Where can I find that fact WSB? Not according to my lawyer, as of last Wed. Things change hourly now I get that.

Both my CTC stores are out of gas cans. -
The smiles of the little ones says it all. I hope the ice is gone soon, planning a trip to Georgina for perch next month which isn't far off.

Albert, These are strange times we find ourselves in. Of course Uncle Johnny and Aunt Tich always have the family get togethers at our place. Everyone enjoys getting out of the city and coming to the lake and we enjoy hosting. But the usual suspects just on my side with the 3 new little babies is 17 all together. 7 past the recommended safe gathering and doesn't include all the comare nd compare. Easter dinner in May or June? Easter, Mothers Day, Fathers Day, Victoria Day and 3 birthdays all in 1 fell swoop. Not a bad idea actually. Only have to clean up the mess once.
