I have the same motor and I too hear mine do that sometimes. I convinced myself that it's like the rear wheel on a bicycle. When you stop pedaling, it clicks.
Developing/fostering socials skills will help a child to never need to defend themselves physically. If all that's required is to toughen up the child, almost any team sport will fill the bill. Chores or any kind of physical work inside and outside the home will really help too.
But hey, that's just my opinion and you know what they say about opinions...
