How many of you folks fish north of PICKLE LAKE
grt1 replied to lenray's topic in General Discussion
From 1976 to 78 I had Pickle Lake and Red Lake as my SOUTHERNLY points of call . They were the towns that I could get out to and get some laundry done and have a shower. If I was lucky I could get to one of them at least once every 6 weeks. Sounds lovely doesn't it?? Any how, I used to cover ALL the reserves and indian settlements from the Manitoba border to Hudsons Bay to James Bay and like I said previously south to Pickle and Red Lake. I managed to do a fair bit of fishing over the course of the 2 years up there and in some cases it blew your mind away, in other cases, the fishing I have now on Gullrock is far superior to some lakes up there. -

When I was putting in a furnace in my house (1400 sq ft) + full basement, The furnace guy told me that it would take years to get a payback on the high efficiency mode., For the money he recommended the next step down from the High efficiency model. This was 10+ years ago and the furnace was an oil version. I don't know how much they cost now but the diffference back then was about 2500 dollars for high efficiency. I went with the recommended furnace and haven't had a problem (touch wood)

Ok I been on this board for a while now and I see all these posts with quotes from other responders in the replies. My question is :: How do I do this to include it in my replies?? please don't make it full of technical info, just a simple way to do it thanks

This is the way I would look at it, The motors are 2 years old with VERY little time on them , they were probably worth 15,000 for the big motor and 6,000 for the little one (at least here in Red Lake), The depreciation for the blue book on them may make them worth considerably less, but since you are looking at the total package, they are still worth 15,000 together to you. The downriggers and other accessories are easily worth a 1000 and the boat trailer is worth 500, ,so that is 16,500 leaving the rest for the value of the boat. Any boat that floats up our way is worth 1000 and this boat looks in pretty good shape and worth the difference they are asking. To me, I think this is a pretty good deal, I'm sure the seller could get more up here if it were located here.

If I had thought of it sooner I would have got my handycam out and taken some footage, but , I just got it and totally forgot that I had it. Guess that's what old age does to you. I wouldn't shoot them, they are just a great feature of living in the north.

Yesterday I spotted a wolf coming off the shoreline by my neighbours house. I saw it had something in it's mouth and I hoped it wasn't the neighbour's cat, so when we went to town later in the afternoon we stopped and checked, the cat was safe. There were 2 more wolves running around on the ice in front of my place when we went to town. I talked to another neighbour and he has a moose hanging in his garage so they may be on the scent of this moose. Anyway, it was kind of neat to watch them for a while.

pesonally, Iwouldn't put carpet back in, I have a Hell of a time keeping mine clean, it holds the dirt and pollen (up here we get a lot of pollen from the poplar and birch trees) and it always look grubby. No matter how many times I pressure wash it the dirt doesn't take long to appear. go with a vinyl flooring, it cleans well and the new ones out are non-slip. Even Lund has put in lift up carpet over the vinyl.

hammered brass #4 indiana with 4mm red beads on a 20# three foot leader. I've caught trout, walleye, perch, northerns and whitefish on this rig. -
I met a trapper today at walmart who was telling me of a case of a local artist (Dryden area). who had a display of her carvings in antlers at a local display. She was approached by a game warden who asked where she got her antlers. The warden was looking at a large moose rack with the top half of the skull attached. She told him a friend had shot the moose and gave her the antlers to use for her art. The game warden then told her she shouldn't have them as it was illegal to give them away. So at that point she said, "ok, i found them in the bush and brought them home". A couple days later 4 game wardens showed up at her studio with a search warrant and siezed all her finished antlers and any others she had to work on. They also charged her for making false statements to the game wardens as she changed her story. The trapper said the artist was given a large fine and has to apply for permits for each set of antlers in order to keep them. He also said many people in the area are donating to her "fine fund" . So I guess my question is this, has anyone ever heard of a permit for antlers, be they give to you or found in the bush?

The Iceman cometh and goeth...cometh...and goeth
grt1 replied to limeyangler's topic in General Discussion
Yup it sure is a crazy year, I reviewed our records on when the bay we are on froze and since 1990 when we moved to Gullrock, the latest was Nov 27th. I was going to toss a line in this afternoon and give it a try, but somehow a nap got in the way,,,go figure. we get a skim around the edges in the early morning and the wave action takes it out before noon. Looks like it will be nip and take to get some really safe ice before christmas. -
this was reported this morning on the radio A Tourist Camp in Waldof has been completely destroyed following an early morning fire Thursday. Machin, Dryden and Oxdrift fire crews were dispatched around 3 o'clock. Firefighters spent in excess of 4-hours battling the blaze. Machin Fire Chief Rob Wisneski says no one was injured. Wisneski adds the cause is under investigation. The name of the camp has not yet been released by Fire Officials.

I go to several web sites that are fishing related, this one is the one I frequent the most. Today I went to a site that was out of Ignace ontario that had information on northwestern ontario. the last time I was on it was the spring and it really wasn't a very active site. Today I went on it and someone has changed all the topic contents. For instance, under General Discussion the topics are all PORN. In the fishing reports the topics are all like this "mumbi from albania, uri from russia" I never opened any but this is definately not a fishing site anymore. Guess I'll be deleting it from my favorites now.

I got screwed around because I kept making some money when I got my separation slip. no one at EI told me of the 2 week waiting period. After 30 years of working constantly and never having filed for EI before, I went in and got my forms submitted but as you can imagine, at that stageof my life, i always felt worried as to how I could keep up with the bills. No one at EI told me of the waiting period and so I kept filing my reports and any money I picked up from odd jobs I got, when I finally went to the EI and asked what was happening to my money from them, then they told me I needed NO income for 2 weeks. They also never told me of any limit I could make before the EI wouldn't pay because I made too much in that reporting period. Make sure you get all the questions you have answered when you apply, then you will know what you are up against.

Simon, just a word of advice. When I filed for my Employment insurance (EI) no one told me I needed to have a 2 week period of absolutely NO income in order for the program to kick in. When you file for EI be sure to ask if there is this stipulation. I got screwed around for 20 weeks because no one told me. Good luck in the future.

Hi Rick, I just recieved my copy of the latest Lake of the Woods Area News. It has a classified section init that list a pile of cottages for rent in it/ I would suggest you call the publisher of the magazine or email her and she could send you either a copy of the magazine or send you a fax of the listings. Her name is Gerry Wilson and she is a great gal. Tell her that I (Bill Blower) gave you her name , her and I have worked for years on projects . her phone number is 807-468-4189 and her email is [email protected] She spends her winters in Canmore AB but I know she checks her emails regularly. In the issue I just got there are 25 listings for rental properties. I hope this helps

I saw this on CNN a couple days ago with some reporter in Aussie going on about the 8 meter shark that did the bitng and how the beaches are taking lots of precautions with the big predator patrolling off shore looking for an easy dinner. I can't remember if he just showed that picture or whether or not there was actual video of the bitten shark.
