  1. being from red lake, we don't have trains so that idea never entered my mind. As to a bus that is another option but I don't know how long that would take, I guess i'll have to play it by ear when i get there on monday and check out those schedules. thanks for the help
  2. I have to get from the sault to toronto on wednesday, I looked at flights they are really expensive, thought of renting a car for a week or 2 and driving down but if I could catch a ride to toronto it would save a bundle . is anyone on this board travelling to toronto on wednesday the 29th from the sault. i will be at the watertower inn from monday night any help would be appreciated
  3. I bought a starcraft in 1975 and used it uptil 2001 when I got my new boat. My hunting partner bought a sylvan and he told me the guy that designed the starcraft supersport like mine was a fellow named sylvan who left starcraft to start his own boat company. His sylvan was identical to my starcraft, so what does that tell you, different name, same boat. I would go to the dealer that promises and DELIVERS THE BEST SERVICE. that can be worth several dollars in your pocket and the satisfaction that your boat will be cared for properly and the warranty honoured. Whatever you choose, enjoy it.
  4. I have used RealPro Sports in Hepworth . there site is www.luremaking.com they are not wholesalers but are reasonably priced , and they are an Ontario company,
  5. Well I hate to tellyou this but I think I can hook you up with a better deal. I got a 1975 starcraft bowrider with a 1985 100 hp merc on it and it ridesl like a dream, once you put in the one missing rivet and clean the pine needles out of the carpet. I'll trade you even if you can deliver that lemon of yours to Red Lake, Heck I'll even give you a cruise a day tank of gas for your trouble, I don't think you would be upset with the deal since by the time you get the starcraft back down south you won't even notice the dents in the sideof it from the pounding against the dock. Does this sound like I'm jealous, You're right!! great boat, you'll never get tired of driving it.
  6. Well Dave, you know Ontario is pretty big and I was a bit surprised that you only did the Southern Ontario portion, so next round how about coming to the great northwest. Dryden is relatively close to those who fish Eagle Lake, Wabigoon, Lac Seul Red Lake area lakes. Kenora would be ideal for those who do the Lake of the Woods. Give us the opportunity to take in the show Thanks
  7. I was in Dryden for meetings yesterday and was surprised at how little snow is there. We still have 15 -18 inches on the ground but the good news is the lake is turning slushy in the afternoon sun. I talked to the mayor of Vermilion Bay at our meeting and he was telling me that the camp owners in his area are all hoping with their fingers crossed the ice on Eagle Lake will be gone by the opening day.
  8. if you order from the cabela's.ca web site at the 800 number listed I believe the product comes from winnipeg and the prices are canadian dollars.
  9. boat registration is free, but , here in ontario the province is going to chase you to pay sales tax on the purchase.\ a number of years ago I was given 2 fourteen foot boats that were scrap as far as the owner was concerned. but I saw that they could be saved and he gave them to me. One was already registered and I sent those numbers in with a change of ownership and got the registration put in my name. the other was never registered and I submitted a new form for it. it too was approved and numbers and registration papers were issued to me. two years after that the province sent me a letter requesting payment of sales tax for the first boat, the one with the numbers. I went back to the original owner and had him sign a form saying no money changed hands and the boats were headed to the dump beefore I got them. It took several months of letters back and forth before the province was convinced the deal was as stated and no pst was to be paid. two years after that they came after me for the pst on the second boat. I had to do the same dog and pony show all over again so what I'm telling you is get something signed that states what you did or didn't pay for the boat and keep it safe because it may take a year or two but they will try to get your money for pst.
  10. I got a 640c last year and really like it. the price was the factor for me, why pay more for the lowrance name when you getthe samereadings with a cheaper unit. as far as the wattage, I guess it depends on how deep the water you fish is. In my case the deepest is 50 feet so the power isn't a real factor.
  11. I had the same problem with the hummingbird at the back of my boat, ended up replacing the depthfinder and solved the problem. the only way I could shut it offf was to remove it from the housing it sat in.
  12. Last night around 9pm cdt two semi's collided head on 30 km east of Kenora. the two drivers were killed and the highway was closed. It is now 11:45 am cdt and the higway is still closed, the traffic has backed up, according to the radio, for over 100km in both directions and the higway coming from Fort Frances through Sioux Narrows #71 has also been closed due to the traffic back up. The radio is reporting the reason for the delay in opening the highway is due to the fact there are dangerous substances involved that were being transported by one of the trucks. The police are hoping to have 1 lane open by 12:30 pm cdt and the entire road opened by 7PM.
  13. I'm not hooked I only check it 7 or 8 or 9 or14 times a day! it's been a long cold winter and its snowing again, need I say more
  14. I guess any recommendations would depend on the time of the year you wanted to go. I don't think you'd want to be in Florida in July or August or Whitehorse in November thru February. give us the timeline you are looking at I'm sure we can come up with somekind of romantic fishing resorts
  15. reading these posts really got me thinking as to what I would like to have back the most and I think the one Iwould have loved to have captured on film involved my dad taking me to the Nith River outside Paris for Pike and walleye. I was about 11 or 12 and I had worked for a while to save up to buy a Fleuger Limper (a siver walleye spoon) and as soon as my dad saw it he wanted to cast it out and give it a try. He put it on his line, wound up for the big cast and promptly snagged it on a tree branch 20 feet in the air behind him, he tried his hardest to get it out but finally broke his line and my new lure was lost without ever hitting the water. Was i ever PO'd and angry at him. When we got home I told my mom about dad's stealing and losing my lure and she just about peed herself laughing. needles to say I wasn't impressed. When I look back at it now 50 some odd years later, it is my favourite memory of my dad and his fishing prowess. I wish they had digital cameras and camcorders back then, I would love tosee him and this adventure again.
  16. this was a dirty rotten report!!!! I don't know why anyone would show someone out fishing on WATER when I have to look out at my lake and see 2 feet of snow and 4 feet of ice below it I am so JEALOUS oh yeah, it has warmed up here from -15 this morning to -2 spring is NEVER coming !!!!
  17. the MNR might be able to give you a name, that would be a start. also, the tax rolls are usually available to search if you know the area the search may be easy to find a mailing address as well as the appraised value.
  18. I do my own spring thing on my 20 hp merc but for my opti 150 I take it to the dealer to check the lower unit oil and fire it up for the first time . My insurance on the boat and motor stipulates that I must have it properly winterized by a dealer in order to maintain my policy.
  19. great report Simon, just as a matter of interest, since I'm waiting (not so patiently) for my spring open water trip to Eagle Lake, What part of Eagle were you fishing and how deep was the ice?
  20. When I was a kid growing up in brantford the only place you would catch walleye (back then everyone called them pickerel) was at the dam by the lorne bridge and under the cockshutt bridge you only caught big red fin suckers. HOwever, my grandfather told me that when he was a kid the fishermen used to string rope between the shores at the cockshutt bridge and hang big hooks with bait and get sturgeon on the lines at night.
  21. I've had them all, ford, chev and now dodge. In my opinion the dodge is the better truck, I love mine. It is a regular cab 4.7 litre V8 (not hemi) 4x4 and it has 137000 km on it I get 20 - 22 mpg on the highway and 17 -19 around town. (little less in the winter due to warm up time). it is a solid truck and it rides great up here in the rough highway capital of ontario. so far i've replaced the tires, brakes, a/c compressor and water pump. if you choose the ram, i don't think you will be disappointed.
  22. have fun , when i was there in january i wanted to go fishing but I couldn't get anyone to go with me and the wife was too busy at the shopping centres.
  23. I had this happen a few years ago, the only solution was to buy a new cable. the old one rusts completely throughout and siezes the entire length. I wish you luck on freeing it but things don't last forever when there is wind and water and cold temperatures involved,
  24. I am currently in Winnipeg and was looking at the new lowrance hd5 unit. when i asked about the navionics chips working in these units, the salesman told me that they have tried the chips they have and they don't work, the unit tells them it is unable to read the information. When i said the brochures and web sites all say the chips should work, why are they having a problem The salesman said the navionics people are developing a new chip and haven't got it ready yet for these units. as a result the salesman at cabelas said they weren't ordering in any more units until the chips are available. Any guys on this board having problems with these units?
  25. this is definately a cool site, I added it to my favourites, I looked at several lakes in my area that I was interested in, quite an eye opener to see the size of some that look small from the highway
