that's so awesome right out your back door! Very jealous!

lol that's funny... in our smaller town we have it pretty easy as well.... Built a deck... what permit? screw that man they tax us enough as it is. Also, we live in a new subdivision and they aren't charging us property taxes at the moment. They said they won't come looking for taxes until the subdiv. is full.... that could take 10 years at the rate they're going... The wife and I are putting the money away though because if they come to us in 10 years looking for 30K we'll be screwed!

Anglers fined fishing out of season !!!
The Urban Fisherman replied to fishindevil's topic in General Discussion
Dude my dad caught his PB Walleye on Scugog casting a big muskie sized spinnerbait! lol The only time he ever fished the lake! I thought it was a total fluke but apparently not. I wouldn't have believed it unless I was the one holding the video camera in my hands.... and I was. ;o) I agree %100 man that guys rigged out with their bass boats are probably out there doing it.. and as someone else pointed out there's people doing it in tinnys, canoes and from shore as well. Dave used to fish crappie / walleye etc. out of a G3... nowadays he just sticks to his bass boat because he loves to fish out of it. Crappie, Perch on small jerkabaits, walleye you namei t.... I'm sure one day we'll even end up doing a friggin trolling show out of the skeeter! Imagine that thing with riggers on it! -
forget the dropshot - I like going after my crappie with a micro crankbait! ) Dropshots work great though... nice haul!

YEP - when I was a teenager I used to trap minnows for myself/dad/uncles and I had an old deep freeze that I got off Kijiji for like $35. Kept it so that the water was as cold as I could get it without freezing it and had an aquarium pump/filter... they would easily last all summer and I always had minnows on demand... shiners, big suckers you name it.

Thanks N.A.W.! Thanks Jimmer. twas a good time out with the kids... makes me want to get back out this weekend... but the forecast kind of sucks... Thanks Buddy! Yeah man I learned something on this trip for sure... I've always just used whatever I had laying around for pannies.. usually 6lb mono/fluoro that I sometimes use for finicky smallmouth... I just kind of thought they were dumb aggressive little panfish and have always done well enough.... but Claira's 2lb Mono was absolutely killing us... when she wanted a break I used her little pink rod! lol Getting a decent hookset in wasn't easy with a 16 inch limp noodle kind of ice rod! lol Thanks Big Cliff! I've been mindful of line diameter with other species but never bothered with panfish... until now... I'm going to keep a spool of 2lb mono in the boat just for panfish leader material from now on! Have a great weekend folks!

They taste fine but the bones are nearly impossible to get out... or I just suck at cleaning them! -
Yesterday was the only day this week not calling for rain so I decided to take my girls out for the evening bite on our local swim. Luke was gone to Toronto with Mom so we were scott free to do whatever we wanted. Booyah... let's go fishing! Claira hasn't really been out as much as Averie did when she was 2/3 years old. It's just a lot tougher to get out when you have 3 kids and a bunch more stuff going on... So Claira was VERY stoked to get out and bugged me for 3 days leading up to last night. We forgot worms at home but had a mix of live minnows and soft plastic minnows. I was actually hoping to get some underwater footage of trout boatside but after trying for a little while we gave up and went in search of panfish. We found schooled up pannies on a 5-6 foot sand flat. The thing that amazed me was that little Claira got bit at least 5 to 1 over Averie and I. It was crazy.... and Averie was getting frustrated with it... lol Maybe Claira just had " The Hot Stick " or Rookie luck but I'm going to bet it was the 2lb test ice fishing line she had on her rod. All three of us were fishing a dropshot, same hook, same weight, same bait... but Averie had 10lb Fluorocarbon, I was sporting 8lb mono and Claira's 2lb Mono got hammered every time she dropped her hook. Unfortunately she missed 9 out of 10 fish but she had a ton of fun... and boy did I get a workout putting new minnows on her hook. Anyways it was a great evening out with my girls, and I'm glad Claira got to have bragging rights for most fish caught. We even managed a few eaters for a snack tonight. On a side note - all the perch we landed were males. We had a couple of fat females hooked up but Claira lost them boatside. Hope you enjoy the pics and have a great weekend! Cheers, Ryan, Averie & Claira

Quick Report - Our Trout Opener!
The Urban Fisherman replied to The Urban Fisherman's topic in General Discussion
Thanks dude - much appreciated! You bet man - I'm planning to get back out there with my 3 year old one evening this week. You know that we know where it lives and we'll be back... I know I'll be back very, very soon! Thanks for the good time guys! -
The past several years myself and 3 other Fish-A-Thon crew members have targeted stocker bows and natural inland browns for opener. My parents moved down this way permanently over Easter and my old man was eager to come out with the gang. Sure my dad and I chirped each other a little, and I was frustrated in the morning as I forgot to bring a lighter to light my annual trout opener stogie.... but the boys put up with me and we had a great time on the water. The bite was tougher then usual this year, but we managed a handful of small browns and a few good eater rainbows with some panfish mixed in. Now the boys always knew I was a little unstable but at the last second, as we were just about to leave I hooked into what would have easily been my biggest brown trout, and a fish of a lifetime from this body of water... only to lose it at the net. ( My own fault as I grabbed the line just as it was coming to the net... ) I freaked out in a way that I would not appreciate from my own kids! lol Anyways, it was a great time Tom, Frank, Dan and Dad... that big fish will haunt me forever... Looking forward to getting out again soon! Tom slayed a bunch of panfish but we didn't get a picture for some reason... sorry buddy. First open water fish of 2014 My old man's first inland brown Rainbow on the crankbait... Frankie Dano old man with his supper supper

I've said it before and I'll say it again - these are the reports I love the most. I pretty much only get to fish with my kids so I love seeing other dads out there sharing their love of the sport with their little ones! Good work old man!
-
good stuff man - I don't have the patience for all those snags... You're a better man then me!

Not your typical 'Opener' thread.

Awesome! ( that is all ) -
My parents are renting a cottage overlooking the bay near St. Williams while they build their house and the people who they're renting from said they watched a few huts go down this spring... My first year out in the boat in March I smoked a sunken hut going full tilt and learned the hard way.... the problem is that the huts are only in 4-8 FOW so even when they're sitting on bottom you're still going to hit it... Now when I'm in any areas that are prone to having lots of huts in the winter I take it easy.

looks like a good time to me!

yeah I was thinkin' the same thing only I'm about 4 hours away! haha Let us know how it goes!

man open water never ends for you guys! good stuff! -
So it begins... Open water season is here!
The Urban Fisherman replied to The Urban Fisherman's topic in General Discussion
yeah man I learned the hard way my first time out there in March 4-5 years ago... No worries though i managed to dodge the odd stray iceberg only to run into a sunken ice hut! Fishing is fishing DB - The only time of the year I don't like is when it's not quite safe enough to get out... or when it's just a little to sketchy in the spring... yeah me to.. even though it's a complete zoo! It's become a family tradition. Get drillin' buddy! Have fun! lol All the marina's are still locked up but there's one launch on the whole bay that blows out before the ice even usually comes off the bay.... -
That's ridiculous Simon. lol Take it easy dude - Don't throw your back out shoveling and I promise i won't throw mine out launching the boat....
-
Well it is for me anyways! . There's only one access point to the bay but you can bet on me getting out there within a week! Thursday is my birthday so...... Two days ago people were ice fishing - yesterday we had a huge wind that blew all the ice out into the main lake. Have a great week! Cheers, Ryan
