  1. i've caught smallies of all sizes on crayfish ranging from little one inchers, to "mini-lobster" 4 inchers. hook them through the tail through the underside and up through the shell, make sure you don't puncture the veign in the center of the tail... the crayfish will die in less than 5 minutes if you do!
  2. i've got the same unit, haven't really had any problems with it... the only thing is the suction cup... it falls off once in a while... but that's usually because the boats that i put it on are rentals, and generally not the cleanest (or smoothest) surfaces to stick it to. i also use it ice fishing, you'll have to macgyver something up to the transducer like a T-bar of some sort to keep the transducer sitting straight.
  3. i'm gonna try my damndest to get the day off work and find a partner with a boat... hahaha i've got some smallies out of rice topping 6lbs in the past... i'd love to get out there for a mini-tourney like this...
  4. don't think anyone's said it yet... the smallmouth's favourite food... LIVE CRAYFISH!!!
  5. I'm on Rice the weekend after labour day... i just sent you details... check your PMs
  6. La la la la la la la La la la la la Good Tune! hahaha
  7. maybe that's my problem, i've been fishing out on my buddy's boat for muskies... i'll just hit the pier next time! lol nice fish! can't wait to get my first top-water muskie!
  8. WOW, that is the best video i've seen in a while... hahahaha
  9. a finger... no problem... you've got 9 more, you'll make do just fine with the fishing! when i was younger i broke my arm just before my annual Rice Lake trip, and a family scheduled trip to Florida. i had a cast on for both trips... and did plenty of fishing on both trips. So if i can do it with a full length arm cast, you can do it with a little finger splint! Suck it up little man... get out there and do what you live to do! GO FISHING!!!
  10. I think it's more or less an all-of-the-above type answer for me... i sometimes have a different reason to get out every time i go... but more often than not it's a combination of reasons why i go fishing... There are times when i want to go out and get a nice feed of fresh fish... God knows i love a good fish fry! There are times when i just want to get away from everything... relaxation... stress relief! Competition... Sure! it's FAR from the ultimate reason why i love fishing, but sure, i love to beat out my friends and family... or better yet, beat out people i don't even know who are fishing in my spot! hahaha... there's nothing better when you're bringing in your 10th or 15th fish and everyone around you is cursing at you and asking what you are using to catch all those fish! and then when they switch to a similar or exact same bait, they still can't catch anything! LOL! recreation/hobby... something to do on the weekends to get away from it all! how about exposing friends to the sport/hobby of fishing... i've taken several people who either rarely go out or have never been out fishing before... i love teaching people what i know about fishing... experiencing the outdoors... getting away from the the city... experiencing the beauty of nature! someone also mentioned the challenge of fishing... i LOVE a good challenge! trying to figure out where the fish are, and what conditions i should be fishing in certain areas, and what baits i should be using at certain times... or hell, maybe it's everything i've mentioned all wrapped up into one nice little package... I have always loved the outdoors, since before i can even remember... my grandparents lived on a farm in scarborough, with the rouge river running through their property, lots of forestry and wildlife... also, i was introduced to fishing when i was approx. 5 or 6 years old when our neighbours invited our family to their cottage... i've grown up fishing with my dad and my brother... and we make it a competition everytime we go out together... we also love coming home to a nice cold beer after fishing, then cooking up our catch and having a nice fish fry after a long day of fishing... But sometimes i go out fishing on my own, just to get away from everything... tomorrow will be one of those days, i haven't been out for a few weeks... i've been too busy working and dealing with other things... but on wednesday, i'm taking a friend out fishing, she's been out with me a few times... and again, each time is a competition, but it is a way of getting away from it all, relaxing, having a good time with good company, then at the end of the day... HOPEFULLY having a fish fry and beer to top it all off... i wish there was one SOLID reason why i love fishing so much... but really... i can't come up with one.
  11. does anybody know if Dalrymple Resort is the only place to rent a boat on that lake? they're charging $95 per day, and the boats they have only have 6hp motors on them... i'm not sure if i'm willing to pay that much again...
  12. have caught a few smallmouths near the mouth of duffin's but they are rare... also in the rouge, and also rare... never really targeted bass too much in the rivers, usually hit the lakes for them... you'd probably do better taking a run up to Scugog or Rice and fish off shore there... good luck!
  13. my very first and biggest carp to date was caught on an original floating rapala in the perch pattern... it was hooked in the mouth... the fish was in the 40LB range too... i realize now i shouldn't have been holding the fish by the gills, but i was young at the time and didn't know any better... the fish did swim away just fine though...
  14. that is the typical LSC musky as far as the markings go... they are typically spotted rather than striped as we are used to in the kawarthas here in ontario.
  15. they are definitely a schooling fish... at least they are when they're in lakes... not sure about rivers... they are tasty too, i kept a few that i caught out on west lake a couple weeks ago... still got some in the freezer, might cook 'em up tomorrow night during the forecasted t-storms!
  16. HAHAHAHA! OMG! That definitely just made my day! TOO FUNNY!!!
  17. My heart is with Forrest, but my brain and my money is with Jackson!
  18. trolling the channel, mid-lake will also pick up a few walleye... i would use a worm harness or erie dearie and worm if that's the area you were targeting. weed pockets are still number one in rice for walleyes though! kinda hard to troll crankbaits in the weeds!
  19. if balsam gets over-run by pike, it won't be long before the other kawarthas follow suit, unfortunately... Like i said before, Dalrymple is a perfect example, there are still a few muskies left (and they are BIG), but there are just too many pike to contend with... i REALLY hope the other kawartha lakes don't follow the same pattern.
  20. that can't be good for the kawarthas as a whole! i hope they don't take over the muskie fishery like they did in Dalrymple... not very many muskies in there anymore!
  21. they may be an evasive species, but they've been here since the 1800's... that being said i still wouldn't add them to a pond... they will ruin it... unless that's what you want to fish for... they will overtake whatever is in there now in less than 10 years for sure! there will be a natural die off of weeds mid-summer, just like in every lake in southern ontario. but if it's THAT bad, and can't be tolerated, i would say that dredging would be the best option, it's natural (no chemicals, no introduced fish...)
  22. one of our members reported a pike catch on balsam last summer... http://www.ofncommunity.com/forums/index.p...1&hl=balsam they both look like tigers to me too! could be stocked though... who knows!
  23. i have that lure, in the same colour even, wanted to try it for muskies on the bog... looks like it'll be good for the bass too! great job guys!
  24. 40+ pound carp on a perch coloured floating rapala... hooked in the mouth. very strange! landed on 6lb test mono as well...
  25. absolutely, i caught my biggest pike to date with a red devil!
