Filtering is always a PITA for me. I did one batch this year, ran it thru my wool filter with 3 prefilters. The 4 litres that came through were bottled, the rest that didn't come thru I put back in the pot, and cleaned my filter, 3 new pre filters and ran it through again. The first batch had maple sand, the second didn't. Weird stuff. The first batch I did, 100l of sap, made almost 3l of syrup that was almost like honey. Beautiful stuff, and no problem filtering it. I get about 16l/h on mine, but I put a grate over top of my boiling pan and keep my propane tank on top of the rack to keep it warm. It makes a HUUUGE difference. I also have a really good burner. Its a really old one, but it pounds out heat. I wish I knew how many BTU's it was, because any of the new ones I've bought don't even compare. I can fill my pan with 100L and finish it on one tank of propane easily. So for about 15 bucks I make about 2.5L of syrup. S.

Is a vehicle lost through the ice covered by Insurance?
Sinker replied to Old Ironmaker's topic in General Discussion
I'm fully covered, and I have that in writing. Both my vehicle, and sled. S. -

Same here. Shut down. I get a little sap at mid day for maybe an hour or two but not enough to bother collecting, and only the sunny trees. Kinda sucks. I was hoping to be going crazy this week with sap, but its not happening. I've finished 9l of syrup and have no sap at the moment. S.

Thats great info from a tourists point of view. Good stuff. All i want to do when i get there is go home. The whole tourist thing doesnt appeal to me at all. The last time i was there, i stayed 3 weeks, and never left my dads property except to make a beer run or go out in the boat. I grew up 5 miles from lanse aux meadows and have never been there. I hear its pretty great though..... S.

No....well, not yet. This is my first year in this bush. Its a friend of mines place, that I kind of got addicted to the whole maple syrup thing. We have big plans for next year. Its a 10 acre bush. Hoping for 2-300 taps next year and a new evaporator. 6x2 Lapierre wood fired. Right now we have 146 taps on buckets with a 4x2 flat pan on propane, and a 2x2 finishing pan on propane. Gotta get wood fired next year for sure. Been saying it for years now lol S.

I have always wanted to go that way, but heard the roads aren't great going through Labrador. It would cut a lot of the ferry cost for us, but I'm sure add a lot more driving?? My dad's place is about 10km from the ferry landing in Lanse Aux meadows. For me, my gf and two kids it will cost almost $400 for the ferry. I count it as one night accomodation too. We leave home and drive to Grand falls NB on the first day, about 10 hours, then next morning straight to the ferry....about 8 or so hours. Take the night ferry across and get a few Z's, and hit the island at first light for the trip up the coast to "home". Another 8 hour run. Its not really all that bad. Take a look at flights.....the prices are NUTS! To fly four of us down is over $3 Grand! The drive is part of the adventure IMO. I kinda like it. Its about 2500km one way. My vehicle gets about 11l/100km so I figure 300l of fuel at average a buck a litre. One night accommodations on the way down, plus food and etc.....lets say $1000 each way.....saves me a few bucks and my gf and kids get to see the east side of this country that they haven't seen before.....not too bad IMO. Once we're there we just have the price of booze and gas for the boat LOL..... S.

Not much happening here. Daytime highs aren't quite high enough to get a good run. Slow and steady day by day. Hope to have enough for a good boil next weekend. Looks like it may keep flowing for a while down here now. The weather forcast keeps changing in my favour. S.

Tourism is just about the only business left on the island and its not cheap. Its rediculous actually. S.

A Maintenace tip for transducers/ almost NF
Sinker replied to Old Ironmaker's topic in General Discussion
Yup, I have replaced many of them, both lowrance and birds. I guess it depends how much you use them. I use mine year round, and I think icefishing is when they take the most beating. Bouncing in the sleigh doing 40km/h down the lake wrecks gear! S. -
There is a definite knack to them. Once you get it though, look out fish! Great vid james! S.

A Maintenace tip for transducers/ almost NF

I find transducers have a lifetime. Every few years they need to be replaced for the best performance. You really notice it icefishing. I think getting banged around in a sleigh behind a snowmobile or quad on the ice is especially hard on them, so I keep mine in a piece of foam to help protect it. S. -
My dad lives in a small town Called Griquet. Close to Lanse Aux Meadows. Also a very cool place to see. He is about 20 mins drive from St. Anthony. S.

I will be there from last week of july til 2nd week of august. We will be up at the very Northern tip of the island at my dads place.....you met him at the marina once or twice.....come on by! The cod fishery usually only runs those 3 weeks, so if thats what you want to do, be there then. Honestly, if you want the real newfie experience stick to the small fishing villages and get to know a local. They will take good care of you, and knowing you, they would take you right in. We have a pretty busy trip planned while we are there, but if you intended to go up the northern peninsula, call me on my cell and im sure we could get you out to jig a few cod, have a few drinks afterwards, and hang out for a good ole time. I cant wait to go! We are driving down. Leave july 19. I will be in a bit of a rush to get there though. Seen all the sights on the way enough times now that i just want to get "home". If you have any questions just call or text me directly bud. Just a warning. You may not want to leave once you get there! Lol S.

No daytimes above zero?

Total so far is 9 litres finished. I'm hoping this weekend will bring one more good run so I can get up to my usual 15 or so litres. Keep in mind I doubled my taps this year, and I am running way lower on sap collection. Not a good year by any standards for my area. How's everyone else making out?? You northern guys should be ok I would think? No? S.

Its not a big deal if you run snows. I swear by them and find them to be helpful in the spring when back roads are mush. I do a lot of driving in bad conditions and find they are worth the prixe in piece of mind anyways. 5000km/ month on average and i dont let bad weather stop me from doing what i have to do. S.

Those hole shots are amazing. Well, they are all amazing, but I bet we see a few of those hole shots in a magazine at some point. Great stuff. S.

Not only can you split the screen like that, but you can also set the exact depth you want to see on your graph to enhance your picture. You can't do that on a bird, you just get an option to pick from a menu. Sometimes changing your upper and lower limits by a foot or two either way really improves the way you see your jig and mark fish. S.
