lew Posted April 25 Report Posted April 25 After the big ice storm a few weeks back most folks have power back but a bunch of cottages on islands in Stoney Lake are still in the dark. I'm just south of Burleigh Falls and today the hydro crews have started working to restore them and I guess some islands had the hydro poles knocked down because the hydro helicopters are flying directly above my house carrying new poles. Interesting to watch these guys work. Not the best picture but you get the idea. A lot of folks around me have stand-by generators so we were all OK but those without are probably thinking of getting one. 1

I moved out here to the country in late '96 and after the ice storm of '98 I made sure that I had a genny ready. Fortunately my well pump is 110V so I can get by quite fine with a 3k machine. I'm on propane now too so I can run furnace, hot water, well pump, freezers and fridge along with plenty of led room lights so I can get by quite fine. Don't need power for my stove either. I wouldn't be without one anymore. Edited April 27 by smitty55 1
crappieperchhunter Posted April 26 Report Posted April 26 Our daughter and her family moved to Frankford just north of Trenton a few years back. Beautiful little community on the Trent. They where amazed when they moved there because basically everyone they now know there has a back up generator. Fast forward to now and she totally understands why so many have them. Little small communities just have more issues getting power restored than larger centres. At first they tried to save money by not getting one but ended up getting one and are so happy they did. It has got them out of several powerless times already.
CrowMan Posted April 26 Report Posted April 26 At my place in Central Frontenac my propane powered Generac kicks in for a bit at least 3 or 4 times a year. The way they've strung the hydro lines through the bush, and eastern Ontario being a magnet for ice storms makes back up power a necessity. Yeah, ice storm of '98 it took Hydro 23 days to restore power my previous place on the lake.
Headhunter Posted April 30 Report Posted April 30 Power here in Scarberia went out at about 6:30pm yesterday. I ended up listening to the Leaf game in my truck, in the driveway!! Came back on around 5:30 am. Stupid Leafs! HH 2
Supercuda Posted May 14 Report Posted May 14 Great pic Lew! I'm near Stoney and surprised I didn't see them overhead. With the roaring gens and chainsaws in the neighborhood, the whirlychopper sounds would have blended in. We had to rush out and get another gen. Found out our 3k inverter I bought a couple years back on the long weekend in May of the big windstorm wasn't gonna cut it with running sump pump and the furnace this time around as well as freezer fridge satellite etc etc. Thankfully on NG, so we were "stylin'" per se. Amazing the amount of damage...still lots of downed trees in Peterborough area.

I'm on a small sideroad just a few minutes south of Burleigh Falls and it looks like a hurricane went through here, much like many other places. Problem being though with our location I would guess we may be on the bottom of the list for Peterborough County or Selwyn Township to get around to cleaning the mess up. 1
