So are you using a jointed or regular believer for that? I'd like to try it.  I thought believers were used for trolling

i looked up the grandma  baits. Are they also called Jakes? Looks exactly like a Jake I have.

Yes, they're very similar. Grandma's tend to dig a little deeper and have a tighter wobble...but they're pretty much interchangeable. But hey...with Musky guys...even the smallest things can make a difference. That's why insane idiots like me have both...LOL

Damn these lures are expensive!

Grandma's are relatively cheap when it comes to the alternate universe which is the Musky world. At the Musky Odyssey (annual show and meeting) this spring, I saw lures selling for $ 175 each...and they were sold out of some colours...

i gotta make fun of you musky guys for a second...but why the hell do all of your baits still look like they were made in the 1970's

Some of these "fancy" musky lure makers are a complete joke compared to whats coming out on the swimbait side in California and japan.

$100+ musky bait

Jointed worked best for me, hook onto the front eye to keep it on top and work it back at varying speeds with a few twitches & jerks thrown in. Works well at sunset in shallower water.

I play in both sandboxes, so I see the craziness on all sides.. Yes, I agree...most Musky baits haven't changed since the 50's...and the paint jobs typically look like they were done by my 7 year old grandson.

At the other end of the spectrum, the level of detail on some of the Bass lures these days is ridiculous. Do you really think a creature that has a brain the size of a peanut is going to notice that every single scale on a lure is an exact replica of the real thing. Afterall, these are fish that will eat a spinnerbait...what the eff does a Bass think that is supposed to look like ?

As the old adage goes..most lures are designed to catch the fisherman, not necessarily the fish.

Imagine losing this on a snag....I'd have scuba gear in the boat on standby....and yes, it's a Bass lure and it's US$..

Lew, do you mean this one?

Nope, use the front one, the back eye makes it run deeper and just for fun, get a yellow bait with black stripes, the fish love that color.

whats even more embarrasing, my buddy loves swimbaits, collects the heck out of them, has some that are over $1000...but never throws them. They sit on display in a room in his house lol.

While I dont consider myself a "swimbait enthusiast" I do personally own 1 $140 glide that I throw on one specific pond, one day a year...and let me tell you, watching a glide get chomped on the outside of a weed edge...its pretty friggin sweet.

Also check out the dragonfly that photobombed me...

Different baits, but very similar.  Grandmas come in longer lengths and the lip on the Grandma finishes horizontal compared to the Jake which is perfectly flat.

There's no need to go crazy with trolling baits.  I have about 5 favs that are always in the rotations.  13in Grandma (Prism Firetiger and Black silver holo), Legend Outcast, Legend Perchbait (Jointed and straight), Legend Plow and a BWB 9in Deep Herring.

That does it for me no matter where I fish.. Gbay, Nipissing, Kawarthas, wherever.   Lures are made to catch fisherman with a billion different colours.  Colour is the absolute last thing I consider when making a lure decision.   Action, depth, speed, to me are much more important factors.

IF the water temps are still high 60's/low 70's keep tossing those bucktails!  Find the weed edges that drop into 15-22ft of water.   You'll eventually get bit man, and THEN you'll be hooked :)   Goodluck!

Noticed that the weeds are looking pretty tired... lots dying off now in pigeon. Still some nice green stuff but I did not see a nice big bed of greenery

If you find live green weed this time of year…it’s finding gold.

Last week on quinte, the Christmas tree weed was the only thing looking nice and green still and sure as hell it held all of the fish.

So where do they go when the weeds die off? Deeper water?

usually deeper healthier weed

Coontail, cabbage typically holds up much better than milfoil as it gets later.

You'll likely have to look a bit deeper for the green weed.   I'm a fan of cabbage... find the cabbage, find the muskie.

I'm with ya on that, Bill...hence their nickname "Cabbage Dragons".

As temps get colder and the weeds die on Shield lakes, don't over look offshore rock piles and points that stick out into the deep basins. Musky will station themselves on these spots to intercept migrating forage fish. The colder it gets, the bigger and slower you want to get..

I got my rod! Lexa HD 400 with an Okuma 8.6 EVX (1 to 8 oz)

Gonna get out there tomorrow and catch the Ontario record 🤣

That's a great combo.

Just saw this on a Musky site....looks like the Abu you were originally considering to purchase that started this thread..

The only way that happens is if the reel isn't tighten down on the reel seat and they're trolling lol.    I've never seen even a bargain basement reel do something like that LOL!

I wouldn't worry about any reel doing that to be honest.

Agree Bill.

Every brand of Musky reel seems to have its lovers and haters. Whether its Abu, Shimano, Daiwa or Okuma, I've  seen/heard/read of catostrophic failures with everyone of them. Shyte does occasionally happen, and more often than not it's usually due to user error.

It's like the truck debate...Ford, GM/Chevy, Ram, Toyota.  Two things are a given...everyone has a favourite, and they all eventually will break down.

Although, I would advise to stay away from the Piscifun Alijoz 400 (it's a Chinese Musky reel that sells on Amazon for $130). There's a reason all of the mainstream brands listed above sell for $300++.

I definitely would never spend the amount of time and energy I do muskie fishing and run something like a Piscifun...

ive always found it funny that guys will buy $30,000 boats, thousands on gas, and go and buy their gear off of temu

im not much of a gear snob, but at least buy some used decent gear. Most of my rods are used...fishing rods dont "go bad"

hell most high end used reels i buy just need a quick clean and lube. Thats why they are high end, the parts are designed to last basically forever.
