interesting thought. Almost all of my catches through the ice are very mediocre. I think this is because I choose numbers lakes when it comes to ice fishing. A friend did take me out once to a different spot and I caught my pb walleye. 30 inches long and massively fat. Was probably 12-14 lbs. Other than that one fish I can't recall anything extraordinary

I caught a 20lb Muskie through the ice on a pickerel line (8lb).  I was laughing the whole time because it looked huge through the hole and I didn’t think I could land it.  I did land it but no pic.

one time I took Billy fishing on simcoe.  He shows up and I start laughing.  He’s got a tip up with 30lb line.  He says there’s some big fish in here.  After a while he hooks a beast and instead of paying out some line he just holds tight.  He’s hand bent right down to the water before the line broke.  lol.

Agree with looking for numbers, freezing your spheres off for one or two fish doesn’t tickle my turtle either.

It funny. I will endure sleet and winds and pure nastiness in December to get a shot at a musky. Call it a success if I get one fishing from first light to darkness. Two weeks later and I will only ice fish on nice days, from 10 am to 2 pm and in a spot that will produces constant action. We fisherman can be odd.
