  1. Yep. A later spring means they're still flocked up which results in no birds here and dozens over there. Once the weather warms up the flocks will disperse and people will start seeing them again in the usual area's,. Same with deer. People who do not know the animals habits will think the deer numbers are way down when in fact they're still herded up in many area's due to the late spring and heavy snow remaining. As with turkey, once the weather warms up and snow disappears the number of deer in each bush lot will return to near normal. I have been fortunate enough to see coyotes stalking turkeys on a few occasions anywhere from 25 to 100 yards from my location. I'd assume the only coyotes who go after adult turkeys in the winter are young and inexperienced animals, or are very hungry, as they waste a ton of energy trying to catch the birds with very low success rates. Of the 3 times I have witnessed this, the coyotes didn't get within 20 yards of the birds before they took flight. Talk about one heck of a commotion when the coyotes started to sprint towards their prey!
  2. I agree that water quality likely won't be effected. I posted that because on a few forums I have seen people comparing this proposed site to Borden saying "well, nobody seems to care about Borden being where it is and it hasn't negatively effected the area." Borden was built before the area became populated and tourism wasn't the sole provider of income back then. Times are way different these days in Southern Ontario. Comparing a site that was built almost 100 years ago to a new site is definitely an apples vs oranges comparison.
  3. Yes, but the 2014's have a more efficient engine offering 15% more MPG and an optional 8 speed transmission which apparently increases MPG by 25%. That's a claimed 40% increase in MPG over older models. Huge difference in new vs older models, hence my comment.
  4. Borden, which was built in 1916, cannot be compared to building a new test site in 2014. Population density and tourism is far different now than it was back then.
  5. People, PLEASE look at facts before spouting the "oh, but it creates jobs" line. Sure, during construction people will be employed. But, after that there will only be 5-15 positions to be filled. This is short term job creation, not long term.
  6. Yeah, because soooooo many people are going to score jobs there. "While Fearrey admits that the economic benefit (estimated at five to 15 jobs by Armatec) “isn’t huge” he says" I'm thinking one major area of concern for locals is the fact that 2,300 acres of land is going to be lost to this testing site which will negatively effect fishing, hunting, sledding, and atving, all thing's that local campground and cottage owners rely on for their income. This is practically going to be next door to a campground with cottages that is owned by a long time family friend and it's going to hurt his business severely. Less income and lower property value is NOT a good thing for those people. Petition signed.
  7. Do you plan on buying new? If so, are you going to spend the extra money and get the 8 speed automatic transmission, which will really increase the fuel efficiency? I have only been in two Wranglers...a 95 ish and a 2013. I found the newer one provided a much smoother ride to the point that it was an apples to oranges comparison. I'm wondering if those who are ragging on the Wranglers are speaking from experience with old or new models?
  8. LOL...we may have very different opinions about various topics, but I would still go fishing with you any day.
  9. It doesn't happen very often, but I totally agree with Bill. Long wait times means you really don't need to be there. If you do actually need emergency care you will see a doctor, or at least be put in a room, as soon as you get there. But, try telling that to people who think a runny nose or a scratch means a trip to the ER and think they should receive treatment first simply because they were first in line. I know two ladies who have worked in the ER (10 years, and 23-24 years) and they say the hardest part of their job is dealing with the people who think every little issue requires a trip to the ER. Apparently they aren't allowed to send people home without seeing a doctor due to liability no matter how minor the issue might be. But, they can definitely make them wait to encourage the whiners to go home... I think the best solution is to reduce taxes slightly and have a set fee for seeing any doctor. In the end it would cost us (well, those who work and pay taxes anyways) the same, yet people would be discouraged from visiting their doctor or the ER for minor issues that don't even require treatment.
  10. The spring hunt was cancelled due to political and emotional reasons, not because facts from wildlife biologists suggested it was a good idea. In fact, most were against cancelling the hunt. It was a long battle, but the spring hunt is FINALLY being reinstated in select WMU's as the number of nuisance bears have been increasing annually since the cancellation of the spring hunt. I plan on heading north this fall, alone, for my first bear hunt.
  11. I'm liking the XBMC. The free cable add-on won't work for me. Is there another add-on that will allow me to view shows I currently watch on rogers?
  12. I see you haven't had a job where failing to understand the concept of "the weakest link" can mean the difference between going home and taking a dirt nap. Fulton has this in their installation instructions for their swing away coupler kit:  Do not attach safety chains to the coupler, swing tongue or their existing hardware. Safety chains’ attachment point must be behind castings on the trailer tongue. Why do you think they add that? Why do you think chains are attached to solid points on the hitch and not the draw bar, which is held in place with a pin?
  13. The point is swing hitches are a weak point and chains should always be attached to the main frame of the trailer, not to a part that has the potential to separate. This thread is mainly bickering back and fourth, but I really hope that people with swing hitches will read this and start inspecting them regularly. Huh? How would a measurement class help them? I think you meant metallurgy :D:D
  14. My 8-9 year old 870 functions flawlessly and has zero rust even though it's been put through hell. A few examples: -completely submerged in water twice -disappeared in mud when retrieving downed geese -frozen solid in freezing rain -used as a bludgeon to finish off small game buried in thick brush -dropped/banged on the ground, ice and trees a few times after falling It's received a few makeovers too. Switched from stock to this: To having a scope and rifled 20" barrel for deer (apparently I lost that pic) And now looks like this:
  15. Never happens? 2 minutes on Google provided these from various websites: hellback 01-28-2013, 06:33 AM I had the welds on a swing tongue hinge crack. Discovered it before a disaster could take play. The G3 boat trailer I had, used a sleeve type removable tongue. Much better set up for strength. The bad side on the G3 set up was a light plug connection inside the slip in tongue. Always gave me problems till I eliminated the plug and used a longer harness to reach the truck. Bill Krejca 02-08-2013, 03:18 PM Had the pin break on my 2001 Shorelander, luckily while it was sitting in the garage, at least that's when I noticed it. I just touched the pin, and the bottom half fell onto the floor. I replaced it with another pin from the dealer, but now that I think about it, I probably need to replace with a bolt. Bill tcthe3rd 07-02-2011, 03:52 AM snapped the bolt on the hinged side of my swing trailer hitch. no problems opening or closing hitch. one hand operation. was just driving down the paved road, heard a loud bang. thought a rock hit the boat. a mile down the road made a turn, the swing tongue opened up and slamed into the truck bumper. got out and no bolt. anyone know why this happen. the trailer is 6 years old. may be 5000 miles on it. thanks Explorer 07-02-2011, 10:47 AM I had this happen on my trailer last Fall. Broke off on bottom side of hinge just above the nylock. Bolt stayed in to prevent tongue from opening up. Called company, they sent me some new bolts and said to make sure it was very tight. This really makes no sense because you don't tighten it up against anything. The tongue pivots in the center between the two lobes you are tighting the nylock up against. Anyway put in the new bolt and hoping for the best in the future. My trailer is going on its fourth year of use. I have always carried a spare pin in the truck just in case someone decides they need one while the trailer is sitting in a launch lot. I now carry two pins just in case the bolt breaks again. I don't imagine these 5/8 pins are as hard as the bolt in the opposite hole. I am not so sure we are looking for a harder bolt in this situation. This just makes it more brittle for this situation. The tolerances on these swing tongues could be a little tighter to allow less up and down movement in the hinge. I am not sure how much movement there is in the tongue while hooked up to the rear of the vehicle. (due to the weight and down force) I would guess that some of the bumps in the road give it some good movement from time to time. I would think the harder the bolt and one good strong jolt of force would snap it easier then say a soft bolt. Any opinions from some of you others on a hardened bolt in this situation THANKS davvoe Join Date: Jul 2009 Posts: 26 swing away boat trailer hitch (must read) This is a true story and I am telling it so that this doesn't happen to you. A friend of mine has a swing away hitch on his Shorelander boat trailer. The other day he was coming back from the lake and when he stopped at a red light, the boat trailer swung around and hit his truck. He got out to check what happened and found that the bolt holding the hinge part of the swing away hitch had broken completely in two about a third of the way down. Luckily, only minor damage was done to his truck and bent the hitch and broke the crank down jack on his trailer. It would have been a lot worse had that happened while travelling down the highway. After hearing that, I checked the bolt on my Shorelander trailer and found that it was cracked as well. Another trip or two would have been all it would have taken to have the same thing happen to me. When I went to Bolt Supply to get a replacement, the guy told me these were only grade 5 bolts and should have been at least a grade 8 bolt. This really did happen, and I am just warning you to check the bolt in your swing away boat trailer hitch before this happens to anyone else Sooner Join Date: Mar 2009 Location: Edmonton Posts: 2,546 As an appraiser I have done two different boat trailers with swing away hitches that have broke at the pivot point while going down the highway. Both boats went at highway speed into the rt side ditches thankfully but boy were the boats beat up. I dont remember the make of the trailers as it was more then 5 yrs ago but I have always thought the design just asked for trouble. Seems its quite a flex point. Best to keep your eye on the area for signs of stress and fatige if you have a trailer with a swing away hitch. Check it often imo.
  16. I guess you're not in the firearms community? There are quite a few cases where legal firearms owners have received the good ole "guilty until proven innocent" treatment which results in a lengthy and expensive court process. How about the RCMP entering homes during the Alberta flood and confiscating legal firearms? Does the police brutality at the G20 summit ring a bell? EDIT: Oops, let's not forget the RCMP changing the status of a couple firearms, simply because they felt like it, which in turn has resulted in many Canadians being in possession of $15,000,000 worth of firearms that are now only useful as paper weights. I'm not against police, but the general opinion on this thread is that police in Canada are saints and that is false. While these vehicles may cost taxpayers a pretty penny one way or another, I think each major city should have an armored vehicle to deal with dangerous situations as waiting for one to be called in from a neighboring city could definitely result in lives being lost.
  17. It costs much less than that to install membrane and dimple board when the house is being built, yet few builders do it. I dunno about you guys, but if I were looking at two comparable houses i'd choose the waterproofed one every time and I think it's a huge selling feature. While i'm typically against more rules and regulations, I really do believe that it should be required by code for every foundation below grade to be properly waterproofed.
  18. While the odds of the bolt and pin of the pivot coming loose or shearing off are extremely low, it could definitely happen as the pivot is the weakest link. Let's say the pin that locks the trailer in the straight position comes loose because the driver forgot to put in the cotter pin. The result would be a trailer swaying back and fourth which would put a ton of stress on the one remaining pin that's keeping the trailer attached to the vehicle and could definitely shear it off. With the chains attached where they are you'd have a boat and trailer cruising into the ditch or other lanes uncontrollably where if they were attached to the main frame of the trailer it would still be attached to the vehicle. Having the chains where they are is okay. Attaching them to the main trailer is the best way. My G3 Angler came with a Bear trailer that has a detachable trailer tongue. The manufacturer attached the chains to the main frame to eliminate any doubt and IMO is the proper way of doing it.
  19. From the start of the video until about 0:57 there are two vehicles in the right hand land preventing the cell phone driver from changing lanes. At 1:02, before i'd consider it safe for the cell phone driver to change lanes, the tailgating pickup swerves into the right lane likely cutting off the white pickup and speeding up beside the lady in the car. In the video, after the truck passes, you can see a slower moving car which would lead to the lady staying in the left lane to pass this vehicle as well. The lady was in the left lane and passing the slower vehicles in the right lane and the dummy tailgating her was impatient. This kind of crap with people fighting to be in front happens every day in the GTA whether you're going 125km/h passing people going 105km/h or 10km/h in heavy traffic. Happens in town too on Fridays between 3-5pm...
  20. Tires are the best upgrade for an ATV and stock tires on most machines are absolutely horrible for mud and trail riding. But, they usually do great in the snow because they aren't aggressive and will not dig down in the snow like aggressive mud tires will. A good all around tire that is relatively light and inexpensive is the ITP mud lite. Zilla's are better in terms of traction, but they dig in the snow more and have weak sidewalls and minimal bead protection. I use ITP mud lite XTR radials, but they're too heavy and rob too much power for a stock 500. They wear like iron and the strong sidewalls and bead area's make it possible to continue riding on a completely flat tire while with most tires this isn't possible because the bead will break lose or rim damage will occur because the weak sidewalls cannot support the weight of the machine when the tire is flat. I have zero experience with this machine, but you can message me if you want some tips on inspecting the machine before you buy it. What other machine are you considering?
  21. Are you sure it's just a homeowner looking for some firewood and not a small logging operator harvesting trees? That said, I can't help but wonder about someone who would even think about stealing property and assaulting someone simply because they were harvesting trees on crown land. Are you related to the crazy lady from Toronto who was on the news the other day bawling her eyes out because the city was forced to remove ash borer infested trees from a park? The MNR will have all the answers for you.
  22. ING Direct, now called Tangerine, was absolutely awesome when I had a mortgage as are zero penalties and you can pay off 25% of the principal each year. The best part was I did everything from home (email, fax, phone) without having to visit a bank. I'm not sure what their current rates are, but they are definitely who I will be using when we buy our next home. I'm really looking forward to using the equity in our current home as a large down payment for our next home and letting the future tenants of our current home pay off our maxed out HELOC for us. Nothing beats letting someone else pay off your debt Being mortgage free is a mighty fine feeling and definitely allows you to sleep better at night.
  23. It's not really about your strength or age as even the fittest young man will feel the effects of driving in 4x4 all day, cruising over very rough terrain for prolonged periods, or having their arms jerked back and fourth from the kickback on non EPS machines. EPS makes the ride far more easier, safer, and enjoyable for everyone and you'll feel the difference at the end of the day. Honestly, I highly doubt you'll find anyone who has drove an ATV with power steering and didn't think it was a huge imporvement over the same machine without EPS.
