The most effective stuff is brake and parts cleaner. Available in auto supply stores. Takes most types of sticky stuff off. Cheap too. I was told one time its similar to dry cleaning solution.

If you can do it, get rated horsepower. How often do you run your automobile wide open throttle? Hardly ever I bet, but it has the power to get you up to speed on on ramps. I also find that usually you save fuel too.

Said this before. They are all good outboards. Depends mostly on what you use it for, your local repair facility(yes they all need this), warranty's and initial cost of the unit. Also what kind of maintainence is required each year. I have personal favorites for different HP ranges but so do most of you. The one thing I do have to add is it does not always need to be a 4 stroke. 2 stroke engines are lighter and run strong so sometimes better on smaller boats. Most 4 strokes tend to be quieter and better on fuel- but not always. Choose carefully and do research. It's a big purchase and you should get an outfit that will suit your needs the first time around. I see it time and time again people buying a boat and are looking a year or two later for another.

Sorry I couldn't help you out with your plumbing problem Joe. But I would have if I could be there. Works both ways Joe. It's a community because of fellows (and gals) like you.

Indian Chief 'Two Eagles' was asked by a white government official, 'You have observed the white man for 90 years. You've seen his wars and his technological advances. You've seen his progress, and the damage he's done.' The Chief nodded in agreement. The official continued, 'Considering all these events, in your opinion, where did the white man go wrong?" The Chief stared at the government official for over a minute and then calmly replied... 'When white man find land, Indians running it, no taxes, no debt, plenty buffalo, plenty beaver, clean water. Women did all the work, Medicine man free. Indian man spend all day hunting and fishing; all night having sex.' Then the chief leaned back and smiled. 'Only white man dumb enough to think he could improve system like that.' #2 One evening a husband, thinking he was being funny, said to his wife 'Perhaps we should start washing your clothes in Slim Fast. Maybe it would take a few inches off of your butt!!' His wife was not amused. She decided she simply couldn't let such a comment go unanswered. The next morning the husband took a pair of underwear out of his drawer. 'What the heck is this??', he said to himself, startled at the little 'dust' cloud that appeared when he shook them out. 'April,' he hollered into the bathroom, 'Why did you put talcum powder in my Underwear?' She replied with a snicker...'It's not talcum powder...... It's 'Miracle Grow.'

Wasn't just you Wayne. I checked out some other stuff I hadn't seen for a while when it was down and they worked OK. Just here was down. Found this in my travels.

It does sound like a low to high speed carburation transition issue. Like zamboni says-if you give it a quick choke tug and it goes away you are lacking fuel. Has this engine always had this problem? If the carb is clean and timing set properly there can be some modifications required. If you do pull the carb apart make sure you knock out the venturi plugs and clean out the fuel ports. It's the most important part of these carbs to get clean. Had a brand new 70 back in 1977 that needed choke on hard accel. Ended up opening some transition porting to get rid of it. Sometimes a mechanic has to become an engineer. I also think engineers should be mechanics first.

Them there Crucials just don't stand up!. Mine wouldn't even take a slow moving ceiling fan. Fortunately it was only a couple inches off the end. It still works great. I really like the rod.

I bet you use muffler tape on your car's exhaust pipe too.

Boatman, I believe they were discussing the powerhead itself. In a quality overhaul redoing pistons and rings the bearings in the crankshaft would be inspected anyway. Along with seals and other components. It would be foolish not to. What you may be referring to is overhauling a cylinder head on a 4 stroke as repairing the "top end" In engines with lots of running time on them if you do a valve job it's possible that the "bottom end" may require repair soon as well.

This just keeps getting funnier along the way!

I am no expert painter by any stretch of imagination but time has taught me a couple things. Enamel is an oil base paint and latex water-borne. As you know oil and water are not too compatible. If in doubt it may be a good idea to prime first. Clean the surface to be painted, give it a light sanding to give the surface a "tooth" for the primer to stick to. I have had very good success with a primer product called "KilZ" (There may be similar product out there). Then paint with whatever colour you like. The experts may refute how I do it but it works for me. Workwear. Great pointer on the nail polish!

Hah. Funny as hell. Never heard of this before reading this thread. Not being superstitious myself. Had many a banana on board for lunches over the years. I would respect others wishes but I like bananas so they are OK on my boat.

Yep Terry...Thats the way it is ! Atta boy Jigger!!
-
Geez....Seeing everyone working on their boats or out fishing is driving me crazy. Soon.....Soon ......Soon ..........................Aaarrrrrrrggggggggg!
-
I didn't notice that anyone mentioned it (perhaps it's no longer required) but do you not have to prime the wall before using latex over enamel? Do you know what it was previously painted with Nancy?

Over propping can be more damaging to engines than most people realize. The extra strain on the engine created by a prop that is harder to turn will put more strain on bearings. An under propped engine is easier to turn by the engine but the risk can be over revving causing broken rods, valve train breakage and a few other issues. Find out what your engine RPM is designed to run at at wide open throttle and get a prop that will allow it to operate at that range. This is important to long engine life. Have seen engine failure due to improper props.

Happy Birthday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Very nice work Jack. It would look great on any home or cottage mantle .
-
Yes Raf, ideally that is best. Hard to convince some people though. An extra set of rims for the snows will save a few bucks over 2 or three years as well.

We have good friends who live in Fairborn. They live close by to Wright-Patterson and the aircraft museum. Last time we visited them we did the tour of the museum. Anyone who goes take time for at least a day to see it all. I want to go again. Incredible place.
