  1. Family had a trailer at Tall Cedars for nearly 30 yrs. until it was sold and shutdown. Former Nortel executive bought it, split it into 3 lots, sold them and moved on. Still fish Pigeon Lake in that area and have seen actually lighter fishing pressure there than the late 70's and 80's. Remember counting 87 boats fishing around Red Rock, Roetzels area in 1979 or so on summer Saturday night. Now lucky if there 5-10 boats fishing there at similar time. Musky seem to be as plentiful as ever. Seem to catch one everytime up there. There has been talk of development of Boyd(Big) Island forever. People are more into wakeboarding and jetskiing it seems, fishing is still good up that way. Not a disaster yet. Busy up there on long weekends, lake is practically empty of traffic in May, June and Sept.-Nov.
  2. You have picked one of the easiest spots to get to in Algonquin. Even brought GF's there who didn't like working hard. I have caught small lakers unintentionally just dragging spoons behind me as i canoed around in August at Booth. Good luck!
  3. That is a huge Lake Ontario laker, Congrats to that angler. The above quote explains the rest.
  4. Almost daily For 20+ years i've had either fresh or frozen fish and can tell immediately by taste and texture the difference between them. The larger the fillet the easier it is to tell them apart. Fresh is way better by a mile. Having said that smaller panfish (perch, crappie, sunfish) are still pretty good after even 6 months in freezer if wrapped properly.
  5. Those backroad brookie trips do rock! Despite the bushwhacking, bugs, lost lures, etc....lol Once hooked a large resident brown deeply so i kept it, best eating fish ever. Still put all back since however. Thanks for posting your adventure.
  6. Great piece of work! Quite unique, difficult enough just to paint, but on antlers WOW! Thanks for posting this, ehg
  7. Another great report Mike! These ones with the family members are my favorites.(Like the trip up blueberry mountain you did last summer). Thanks so much for posting this No brighter ray of sunshine than the sincerity and love of your own child.
  8. My 6 yr. old daughter discovered a way to get worms during the day downtown here. We were at a park and when she saw a robin pulling out a worm, she would scare the robin off and they would leave behind the worm which we retrieved. Probably caught a dozen worms in 10 minutes. The other ideas of nighttime and flashlight are good.
  9. As a father of similarly aged daughters, this news really super saddens me. God bless that poor child...
  10. Good going on the catches! It ain't steelheading but it's easy going for lazy guys like me. I think i know where you were at and have run into a few different security guys driving around. If the goverment owns the land it is crown land and open to the public, one Federal security guy told me there. Here is a link to my report on this. http://www.ofncommunity.com/forums/index.p...c=23807&hl=
  11. For trib headwaters from L. Ontario i think 8-12 are average to decent size fish. They would be scrappy on a small ultralite setup for sure. Big difference between their fight and the chubs that fight like wet toddler socks. That fish being 14.25 inches is definitely higher end for southern ontario headwaters. Good luck with this in future it is always a quick and easy go for these little beauties.
  12. Great report! Some nice pike there, but those bird shots are incredible The heron picture with the fish being caught and consumed is a one in a million.
  13. Those specks are quite large for small creek fish. Welcome to headwater brookie hunting; beats the crowds and still is good for a month or so and picks up again for September. Congrats on the success! Those are some nice specimens.
  14. Went and bought Garmin nuvi GPS for car, has feature 'where i am at' which accurately gives lat/long co-ordinates and bought small screen for portability. Tried it out yesterday and found a cache but way to many people around for log in or retrieval. I've been aware of this for years but didn't think of trying until accidentally found an item. BBG i tried spot at Casa Loma and 'tollkeepers cottage' but way too many people around, Don't really have the vision to find yet but will keep trying. Looked at logs and you are all over this stuff!
  15. That lake coughs up the biggest brookies consistently, you are so lucky to be there. Like the picture of the Wood Duck as well!
  16. After looking at this again the pine needles give some size to compare too. Makes the bird smaller than i originally thought so i'll go with sharp-shinned judging by size.
  17. Cooper's or Sharp-Shinned? Seen the identification threads for them here many times before. If that bird was bigger than a crow it could be a Northern Goshawk, looks a little bigger than a Cooper's. It is a female hawk for sure.
  18. WOW, That Channel Cat is HUGE! The Ontario record is 29 lbs, so that one is not far off at 27 lbs. Congrats! Didn't you catch a 7lb smallie on Simcoe last year? Those are some big fish.
  19. Nice going on the continued pike success! You learned not to throw the pike on grass for picture as well, so no wrath of the holier-than-thous.
  20. Thanks for further info on this activity. Looks like a edumacational thing to do with the kids. Live in downtown Toronto so many opportunities to find cache. Did a search for geocaching on this website and somehow missed those threads in past.. Very informative.
  21. This geocaching is very interesting as i look more at it. Went on Geocaching.com and found out you can find hidden cache everywhere, especially many to be found in Toronto. Just need a GPS and computer to find waypoints. Seems that all the replies are positive! Big Cliff sought some information on your 'northern lights' and saw you put object in location on April 15th, 2001. It was last reported on September 18th, 2008. That's a long history! Gonna get a suitable GPS and try out this with my daughter
  22. Looks like you had a very successful day down there! That is a good day in anyone's book. At least you were warned in the first reply that you might get slammed for the grass pike pictures, you will know better next time i guess.
  23. Apparently people are using there GPS for more than searching lakes or finding road directions, they are also playing search games finding hidden items then logging the co-ordinates on GPS for others to locate items. Personally i don't have a GPS since i have my fishing spots and can read a map, but this 'treasure hunting' looks like a fun hike with a goal for the quest. My questions are: does anyone do this here? What is the cheapest GPS you can buy for this? Thinking my young daughter would enjoy this. She was so enthusiastic after finding this item hidden in park by our house. It was actually quite well hidden! I signed and dated the paper inside and put it back for real geocachers to find.
  24. Always added Black Morels to dishes prepared with those seasonal items. Haven't seen morels yet this year though.
  25. First grayling report i remember over the years on this board. Congrats on the fine specimens and thanks for posting.
