Scrolling through some old pictures I found one of the cottage my brother owned in Haliburton circa 1999 The cottage has a special place in my memories - lots of friendships. spending time with family and it really re ignited my passion for fishing - especially for muskie New post is up https://www.northernjacks.com/post/party-likes-its-1999 Here is one of said muskie from this small Hali lake

Awesome - thanks Doug! Will spend some downtime reading the blog Cheers Andrew

Lol - not sure I classify myself as young Doug - when life seems less chaotic we need to chat - I spend a ton of time researching and dreaming about going across North America in some form of an RV w my kayak and dog. I mentally debate all the time would I haul a small trailer, go with a small Class C or Class B RV or is a Truck Camper right for me. In my dreams my blog or writing skills allow me to make some cash on this little sojourn. Waiting till over 50 or older is about getting some money banked, children off to University and all of that! But I want to do it Good to know Bill - its definitely going to be a savings goal. Quit smoking 7 months ago and I have been trying to put aside the money I have been saving for something extravagant when I hit 2 year - maybe its the Sutton

For me I would say someone who doesn't mind conversation and excitement I talk a lot and when a fish is on the line I tend to get hyper and yell a lot

Wow - that perch looks much bigger than the average walleye or at least the average walleye I catch!

Thanks for sharing Chris - that looks like a good time and those are some solid fish -
That's the same ride my bro has (maybe even the same year). Its awesome - and if I had a dream kayak that would be it

No worries at all Bunk, reading all of your great writing over the years was definitely a motivator for me to do some of my own I hear you - I kind of circled so many trips thinking about it but came back to the Sutton trip - re its probably within my capabilities (I think) but also truly epic and something totally out of my comfort zone Cheers Andrew

The goal was to pick 3 trips, all to a degree outdoor focused but only 1 could be a fishing trip The fishing component was inspired by this site and I know 2 members at least who have experienced it. Guesses? Anyway the post is here if you want a quick read https://www.northernjacks.com/post/bucket-list-trip-challenge Cheers Andrew

Like most people I am now working remotely for the next little and primarily staying indoors My daughter loves Dude Perfect and one video spawned an idea for a post that is primarily meant to be entertaining and humorous (I hope) - highlighting some fishing or outdoor trip sterotypes With my internet browsing reaching peak I figured I would share as I am sure I am not alone https://www.northernjacks.com/post/that-guy Cheers and thanks for reading Andrew

With the COVID 19 news today was a lay low and chill day and I finally got around to cleaning up this report and posting it. We really enjoyed Ogoki Lake - to be honest its one of the first places that we thought pretty hard about returning to. Big water, beautiful and John and Gloria's cabin was perfect for us You can check it out here https://www.northernjacks.com/post/storming-for-walleye Cheers Andrew

Rizzo - great video. Its one of those videos that all of the people who know I love to fish send me Out4Trout - awesome story and that's exactly what I was trying to convey - those things only work at a 10% clip but they are remembered 100% of the time

Very nice Brian I never took to fly fishing but my Pop was really good at it and loved tying flies. One thing I remember was that his fave fly was a Wooly Bugger - I think he used it for a lot of different species

I hear you. One of the days we were out the wind took us a long way down a productive shore, almost no paddling but coming back man I was dead by the time I got to the dock while my brother looked like he could go for another tour with the pedals. He bought his used as well - although even at used it was out of my comfort zone. I will say its a beauty ride and he has no complaints Glad you enjoyed it. Hoping to do a lot more of those trips this summer - some close to home (Grand River, Island Lake etc) and some more small lakes in cottage country Cheers Andrew

Lately I have been going back through some old fishing journals to find blog post inspiration A few notes stood out - the notion of a big swing on a tactic or a spot - the Fishing Hail Mary so to speak Brought some big smiles to my face thinking about some of these wings that took us from skunk to touchdown lol https://www.northernjacks.com/post/the-hail-mary

Dutch My brother bought a used Hobie Pro Angler 14 with Mirage drive and I tried it out before I bought mine. Really loved it. Our good friend bought a Hobie Mirage w Mirage and loved it. I just chickened out at the price point Dave I also looked hard at the Perception Pescador Pro w the pedal drive but decided in my feelfree All nice boats it's like anything once you start looking the choice can be overwhelming So far I am happy but as mentioned I think I may add pedals

Looks like a great day Thanks for sharing Andrew

I don't consider myself a gearhead or an expert when it comes to rods and reels But often find its one of those things that first timers tend to ask about How many do you bring? 1 piece or two piece? Braid or mono or flourocarbon? I bring three 1 piece rods - full details are up on a new post but definitely interested in hearing others opinions? Especially for pike set ups https://www.northernjacks.com/post/my-rod-and-reel-set-up-for-a-fly-in-fishing-trip The pike below was caught on an ultra light set up on our first fly in Cheers Andrew

Hamilton Boat and Fishing Show impressions
gordy28 replied to chris.brock's topic in General Discussion
I always remember being a little kid at the Sportsman show with my Pop (Grandfather) and him trying to sneak popcorn onto one of the rods we were using at the pond. A guy saw him trying and just as I thought "busted" he smiled and just acted if he hadn't noticed lol -
I don't disagree that I will want a boat eventually - but at this stage in my life much easier to fish in some of the smaller conservation areas (Island Lake, Kelso, Rockood etc) for a few hours than taking a day to head out with a boat. My thought was depreciation/limited use a lot easier to handle at $1000 than at $10000 lol Thats an incredible video Drifter - thanks for sharing

The past few years I had been having a debate with myself. As my daughter continued to show an interest in fishing and I wanted to be able to do day trips on weekend I kept thinking - should I buy a boat or a kayak? Then my older brother and our friend Mark kept talking about fishing kayaks - interesting Well after a bunch of debating I bought myself a Feel Free Lure kayak and my daughter a smaller Pelican Kayak I am quite happy with my choice - but I will say I think I may spend the $$ and get the pedal drive for my boat - its not a cheap addition but I think it will help with positioning and will help with getting from spot a to b on bigger lakes I have two posts up One on how I chose my kayak and some initial observations https://www.northernjacks.com/post/so-you-want-to-buy-a-fishing-kayak The other about a trip my bro and I took in October to Haliburton to fish in our yaks https://www.northernjacks.com/post/yakking-in-haliburton Thanks in advance for the read Andrew

Thanks for the feedback guys I think we all know on guy like me (a little jumpy with a fish on the line) or we are that guy lol In general I find I relax more as the number of fish caught goes up - on our fly ins I am always a bit edgy until I know everyone is getting into fish. I think its a result of doing a lot of the research leading up to each one

Was out with the guys in my group to discuss a few things for our upcoming trip to Miniss Lake (in August but a good excuse for beers and wings) As always we spent a good amount of time reliving past trips and ripping into each other. One thread that kept coming up for me is the way I get when a fish is on the line and it spawned a new post https://www.northernjacks.com/post/the-angry-net-man Thanks in advance for the read And here is a shot of a PB netted by me lol
