  1. Some great stories - congrats to your wife Lew - thats an impressive haul and I love the canoe story. Can't imagine trying to land a 47 inch musky in a canoe!
  2. Would love to help but I don't know anything about that lake If you are interested in tips and tricks as mentioned walleye central is a good site, Adam Dempsey's site www.fishingoutposts.com and my own northernjacks.com all have info about trip prep etc Cheers and good for you for getting out there with your Grandson! Thanks Andrew
  3. In 2016 my group took our second fly in fishing trip with White River Air to Shekak Lake Overall it was a great trip but unlike our first fly in trip we had to work super hard to find fish every day We had a lot of different weather blow in during the week which I am sure had an impact but man it was tough some days Pull into a spot - get into a fish or three right away and then they seemed to disappear Newest post is up https://www.northernjacks.com/post/looking-for-a-fish-to-happen Cheers Andrew
  4. Great story OI - my first ever musky was also an accident - caught on a Cotton Cordell Big O - just a small guy (although i thought it was a huge bass for the first minute or so) Always remember the first one I ever caught on purpose - small Haliburton Lake on a Swimm Whizz - was awesome
  5. Going through some old pictures I found a few of me, my brother and my Dad on Balsam Lake One sequence in particular stood out- me with a nice musky (a PB actually) and my Dad with one. As most fishing stories go - the catching wasnt the biggest event of the day lol Anyone else got some good "the ones that got away stories" My newest post is up https://www.northernjacks.com/post/never-ever-skimp-on-your-leader Cheers Andrew
  6. As mentioned one way I distract myself in the Winter is by reading. Some of it is specifically about fishing, some of it is fiction with a slant of outdoors and like this book some of it is about putting myself on the path of another adventurer Distant Fires is the story of two high school friends who decide to paddle over 1200 miles from Duluth Minnesota to York Factory. My review is here but overall I truly enjoyed this book and the adventure of it all https://www.northernjacks.com/post/distant-fires-a-book-review Cheers Andrew
  7. Interesting take and thanks for sharing I am going to do some reading and check it out. Cheers Andrew
  8. I was chatting with a guy I work with the other day and the topic of fishing trips came up When I was discussing our fly in trips he said "How do you manage all of the logistics" "like how do you plan for food and drinks and gear" Good question - our group has been doing trips of all kinds together for a few years now and on our 2018 fly in I think our meal plan was a perfect blend of quick and good - re we can still spend the majority of our time fishing or hanging at the campfire while having an epic steak night or a full fish dinner Latest post if up where I detail how we have gone about it and an overview of said Ogoki meal plan https://www.northernjacks.com/post/you-gotta-eat-sometime Cheers Andrew
  9. In Nakina I would recommend John and Gloria Ritchs camp on Ogoki Lake http://www.ogokilakeoutfitters.com/ We also did two trips with White River Air - Pickle Lake and Shekak Lake I posted about Pickle here https://www.northernjacks.com/post/50-mission-cap-our-first-fly-in I have never been with them but I know many speak highly of Air Dale which is based out of Wawa Mike Borger has done a lot of trips with them - his latest report is here https://www.canadafishingguide.net/little-miss-adventure-fall-walleye-fishing-in-ontarios-algoma-country/ Best of luck - sounds like a perfect way to turn 50 - funny enough our first fly in trip[ (Pickle) was timed with my 40th
  10. Some pretty interesting suggestions and love the nature pictures At this stage in my life its pretty tough to just head out due to my family responsibilities on most weekends But I do love a good adventure and it doesnt need to be fishing Hit the Terra Gardens Winter Market in Milton (believe they have one in Hamilton as well) last weekend and had a good time. Lots of local foods, crafts and such Foundry Ice Cream which is in Hamilton was amazing http://foundryicecream.com/ https://www.terragreenhouses.com/winter-market-2020-hub
  11. n 2016 I scored a solid invitation. My father in law invited me to go on a work trip for 4 nights to Miminiska Lake with Wilderness North out of Thunder Bay Mim is just a widening of the famed Albany river - and it was my first experience on a true fish factory Overall it was an amazing trip and being so far North was a dream come true for me I had a spot about 300 yards from the main docks that I could troll and catch walleye and pike almost every pass Full write up is here https://www.northernjacks.com/post/one-lucky-son-in-law Cheers Andrew
  12. So true that this winter hasn't been full anything. Went tobogganing last week after that big snow and was like - this is fun but its the first time the snow has actually stayed long enough to do it this winter. And then it was pretty much gone in 3 or 4 days
  13. For sure and I hate leaving for work in the dark and then driving home from work in the dark I am not sure how people who live in places where its almost all dark do it!
  14. As I write this I realize compared to previous year winter of 2019/2020 has not been a beast But personally winter is my least favorite season. Most of the stuff I love to do like kayaking, hiking, camping, fishing and golfing are all a Sping to Fall deal (ice fishing excluded) Over the years I have developed some of my own ways to cope but also interested in hearing others We recently hit the RV show which was a fun way to spend an afternoon thinking of summer during the winter. In a good year we try to head down south somewhere to get back to spending time outside in the sun and so forth. Anyway latest post is up on this very topic https://www.northernjacks.com/post/a-summer-lovers-guide-for-beating-the-winter-blahs Cheers Andrew
  15. Awesome thanks for sharing I was there (near Liberia) last march w the family ut couldn't justify the cost to fish on my own. Glad you hooked up! We loved our trip though, one of my favourites so far
  16. I grew up playing a lot of sports as a kid and I think thats where the love of a good nickname came from lol Sometimes I was given them - Gordy, Gordo, Taco, Drew and Panjo to name a few and sometimes I gave them The Jigging Gnome for my friend Mark is one of my favorites - its started when he caught this walleye Full story from our trip to Shekak Lake is here https://www.northernjacks.com/post/the-jigging-gnome-of-shekak-lake Hope you enjoy Andrew
  17. Back in 2014 our group made a big jump and completed our first fly in In a word it was epic and have been on 3 since then and are headed out again in 2020 PB walleye were caught, we were stranded in Thessalon and so much more A few quick shots below but you can check the full story here https://www.northernjacks.com/post/50-mission-cap-our-first-fly-in
  18. We have a google hub at home. Cant say I fully understand it but one of the things I love is the picture collage. I often find myself grabbing a coffee and getting sucked in to watching history roll by The picture attached reminded me of fishing w my daughter and her friend many years ago in Haliburton. I know the picture is a largemouth lol but its fro. The trip. I wrote up the story of the smallmouth that caught itself here along w a few other pictures https://www.northernjacks.com/post/the-kids-are-alright Cheers Andrew d16346_59ad3b46b0c64d9987b84ebbc29d1a72_mv2.webp
  19. Yeah - we enjoyed it as well - we did American plan and the dinners were so good!
  20. Going back over the older trips is an interesting experience. This one reminds me that I was young and skinny once lol This was our second trip - and I think it was one of the first trips that the planning led me to this board. We loved it If you want the full read its here https://www.northernjacks.com/post/fat-bottom-bouncers-make-the-fishing-world-go-round Cheers Andrew
  21. I was just texting about this I was given Fly By Night as a mistake as a 5 year old. Someone thought it was a kids album lol From then on I was a wannabe and eventually a drummer Neil Peart was the man. He could play any style of music on any set (Google Neil Peart Buddy Rich tribute to see him on a basic jazz kit) RIP
  22. That's awesome I had to google Turkish bowl. I will remember that trick!
  23. Nice stories - its funny but whenever we are going camping I watch the fire ban info obsessively - I would consider bailing on a trip if there was a full ban in effect I think For our upcoming trip we were deciding between 2 lakes and it was really close. One of the lakes is in a provincial wilderness park in Manitoba and there is a summer long fire ban and that was a deal breaker for us lol Cheers Andrew
