Advice on how to deal with water damages in condo?
woodenboater replied to okumasheffield's topic in General Discussion
a colleague had his condo (and several others) damaged when a toilet install went bad a floor above. totally soaked his hardwood floors and it was a royal PITA to have repaired. things had to be boxed, moved (talking large furniture) etc.. upstairs owner footed the entire costs for all units. don't believe my buddy went through his insurance at all. as art said, be very, very nice and apologetic about it when approaching your neighbour, never know how many friends they have on the board... -
and get a proper thermometer and pay no attention to the built in thermometer on your grill as it's probably off quite a bit. I use this one for the weber kettle and masterbuilt gas smoker. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Maverick-Digital-Remote-Thermometer-with-2-High-Heat-Probes-HD-377/205493872 really helps you keep an eye on the temps if you smoke low and slo. it's wireless (but not app driven) so you can monitor from wherever. I try to stick around 220-250° F for pork ribs

apple wood is great for pork and amazing for steaks. if you could only taste and smell the strip loins I had last week, mmmmm
-
I'm liking wood chunks vs chips more and more. throw a couple of chunks in foil or in a cast iron smoker box and yer good to go. also use chips sometimes but have heard some smokers suggest wet chips are not as good as dry chunks. something about the wet chips never getting to smoke and instead they send up creosote or something. read this maybe on a weber smoking forum or meat smoking, can't remember.... fwiw, I would get a smoker box vs foil, imo, it makes for a better smoke

Outdoors card and finishing license expiry ?
woodenboater replied to woodenboater's topic in General Discussion
Just got the new card and while it's great that expiry date etc are clearer, I miss the picture of the walleye on the front of the card. Now it just looks plain jane. Oh well. -
what can happen if you rent to people who have bad intent on the mind. enough to put that idea to rest huh lol http://www.torontolife.com/informer/features/2015/08/20/jesse-gubb-the-tenant-from-hell/ and http://www.theglobeandmail.com/life/home-and-garden/real-estate/nightmare-rental-a-cautionary-tale-for-short-term-stays/article26033529/

Chief is pulling nets from Nipissing
woodenboater replied to kickingfrog's topic in General Discussion
I think this is also a strategic move. The ball is basically in the court of sportfisher now so we'll see how this plays out. Any further decline will be less focused on nets. But I believe the overall intent is to protect the fishery for future generations. I can imagine Chief had his work cut out for him trying to get this passed. Good for him though taking a strong stand. -
I wouldn't entirely lay the blame on the younger generation as Wynne got a majority and that most likely involved moderates of all ages who were scared off by Hudak. Look at Alberta as well, they voted out a Premier who got cocky and talked down to the people and voted in an NDP government, In Alberta of all places ! I also hope there's enough in the kitty when I retire in another dozen years or so
-
this is the only way forward imo. partisan politics has gotten us where exactly (all levels of govt) ?
-
Fact. Under the two previous liberal governments (Chretien and Martin) we had surplus. Under Mulroney and Harper, deficits. My math says Liberals have a better grasp of the economy than do the CPC.

now that's just crazy talk Geddy Lee for PM ! or Gord Downey

ha, that's cool video, esp when they're hooked and the camera goes crazy angles lol. interesting how a fe just cruise by checking it out. would love to see this with pike up in alaska.

Sorry if this has been posted here already, a search showed nothing. So is this a one trick pony or will it provide useful data and fishing porn ? Looks big so maybe on monster pike and musky ? Guess they're targeting the offshore marlin/tuna etc crowd. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/gofishcam/gofish-cam?ref=jellop&utm_source=jellop&utm_medium=ocpm&utm_content=fish

Triumph Roplene molded polymer boats
woodenboater replied to mike rousseau's topic in General Discussion
1287 lbs for the dual console 17 with a 70 horse Yamaha on the back. Weight looks comparable to a Legend 16 foot full windshield. Wonder if the build is similar to Whaler or the old KMV boats. Let us know what you think, another option is always good to have -
did you get the complete set ? I think there were five, I grabbed them

skies are looking great after a low bank moved out. meteor acidity is picking up with a couple of spectacular ones to the east and north (heading towards the big dipper), also some faint auroral activity on the north horizon. supposed to peak at around 2 am so if you can, get outside while the skies are clear !

@netminder. yea, we're but one of who knows how many solar systems out there. Makes one feel less than a grain of sand on all the beaches in the world when you think about it. Would be cool to have a Tardis to see how things look in a billion years or so or to see our sun go supernova

The meteor shower is not really so much about the universe still growing but that we pass through the debris field of Comet Swift-Tuttle. EVERY year. Most media reports overblow the event and build up expectations but some years can be unbelievably spectacular. I'll be heading up north to my cabin today and 2 am or so should be the best time for the Persieds tonight so try and stay awake till then. The waning crescent moon will make this year better than others as it comes up around sunrise.

I see it as NOT OFteN

wow that's rough. don't know what to say but so sorry you lost a buddy and companion.
-
hoping for clear skies this week and that it can match the shower from a few years ago. this is also a good link with great information. http://meteorshowersonline.com/perseids.html
