  1. this is an extremely informative read. http://www.thenation.com/article/what-i-discovered-from-interviewing-isis-prisoners/ my bad. wrong link....
  2. Peter Cheney with a great story on NASCAR , how it all began and where it goes from here. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/globe-drive/adventure/red-line/the-rise-and-fall-of-nascar-why-tracks-are-removingseats/article27211911/
  3. ^ This. Tells me they're taking Cdn customers for granted. Sail may not have the same fishing lineups (that's what smaller stores are for tbh) but their camping section has enough variety for me.
  4. Doesn't look like it'll work with large fish. Judging by the video, guess it's designed for trout waters. Wonder how accurate it is though. Probably won't replace cradles or bump boards. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/606885277/nrre-tail-scaletm-the-most-incredible-way-to-measu?ref=project_link
  5. no idea why they chose rona as interim leader other than opportunistic optics. also don't think she's the brightest bulb in the pack either. they coulda done better unless the interim isn't allowed to run for the big seat.
  6. I predict a nasty fight for leadership of the Conservative party.
  7. I like our new minister of defense ! http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/harjit-sajjan-badass-canada-defence-minister-1.3304931
  8. possible the cat was chipped so taking it to animal control or humane society would be your best bet. and yes, there might be a family looking for closure. I have a friend whose dog has been missing for a week and change, she's still hopeful but she's realistic. she'd want to know either way
  9. ah no worries man. so much spin all over the place you need to read or watch as many outlets as possible and somewhere in between it all lies something approaching what I hope is the truth if everything goes down the world wide flusher, I hope I'm at my cabin burning wood or sleeping.
  10. sorry if I'm rather sceptical about Russian claims but is there a link to this information ? google isn't much help and it seems some of the info comes from RT, which, depending on one's views, has more spin than CNN or other Western media. well maybe not as much as Fox 'News'
  11. I'm not so sure they're bombing strategically. I think it's more 'who cares about collateral damage, let's just bring on the hellfire' bombing. There's a reason why Mother Russia is involved and it certainly ain't because they're trying to do the right thing.
  12. While there may be some fights we maybe shouldn't be involved in, if we don't stand up for others who are suffering, then what does that say about us a country or a people ? Should we have stayed out of WW1 and 2 ? Any decent human being can't stand idly by as others are subject to genocide or systemic brutality. The day Canada refuses to offer aid, military or otherwise, is the day we cease to be the country I know and love and would die for.
  13. Port Credit must have security cameras to see when he paddled by. Any other situation would mean NO ONE saw him float by which I find hard to believe. I think there's a gauge for the Credit, will see if I can dig it out to see what the flow was compared to normal seasonal flows. edit- so the levels for Oct 29 weren't very high (4.8 give or take, 5.7 is very high with most whitewater play features washed out). If he started at the arena in Streetsville I could see consequences but Erindale Park is relatively safe, from a whitewater paddling pov.
  14. Boaters/paddlers would benefit from wearing emergency strobe lights on their pfd. I got a couple of small ones from Wayne when he was selling them and they're great although I haven't had a chance to attach them to mine yet. They come on automatically and blink white light continuously, which should grab someone's attention. If this boater had something similar, I would guess that they might have been found sooner.
  15. A properly worn pfd will help keep some body heat in but yeah, much depends on what he was wearing and what type of kayak he was in. Below Erindale there is some moving water but not much. There's a bit by the UoTM and through the golf course but nothing very technical, then it's flat till the lake. But yeah, a drysuit or even wetsuit would have helped unless he took a hit to the head. I'm in a drysuit once October rolls around and will stay in that until after the May 2/4. I wonder how far off shore he floated as it's maybe around 22-25 km as crow flies. Figured someone would have seen an empty kayak or colourful pfd in the water.
  16. wildlife highway for sure and that bull looks impressive !
  17. Imo, we shld keep this thread open as long as we keep it clean as per art's advice. this is an important issue that will be dealt with at the federal level so it's good to keep the talk going. I've learned quite a bit from the various links posted as well and just confirms that my poor grades in chemistry were accurate fwiw, I have no probs with people using m-jane and I've never in my life, seen anyone chain smoking joints. A few joints passed around at parties and that's about it.
  18. Not a professional arborist but it's not as simple as getting a crane or lift and bucking it down. If you're not aware of tension and spring, then a limb could very well snap you out of the bucket and send you to the ground. Accidents have happened with professionals so someone not trained, is an accident waiting to happen. But yeah, the quote is high, I'd be looking at several others and specifically ask how they plan to take it down. If they take all the brush away and buck it into stove lengths, that would ease the pain. The fact that the tree is close to your neighbour's property complicates it. Your property and money but I wouldn't hire someone that wasn't insured or trained tbh. ymmv
  19. I'd also be looking to tangle with monster pike if I were Alaska bound.
  20. I'm sorry to hear this mike, losing a grandfather is very tough but you've got some great things to remember him by.
  21. get a proper feller/arborist and make sure they insured. no leeway on the insurance. based on that photo, they're probably going to need a climber or bucket to take the top down. looks like too many obstacles for a notch and cut drop.
  22. wow, that's a huge write off. can you tell I don't have kids
  23. awesome achievement !!! but I was thinking we'd have a trip report about fishing near Marathon, Ont. lol
  24. he handled that very well without being condescending. legalise and control it and make money off it through taxes. but let people grow a plant or two for personal use. I prefer the scent of sweet bud over nasty nicotine
  25. great news and being your own boss will be a roller coaster ride but you're in the driver's seat which can't be beat ! I'm also guessing that we may see a Mossebunk story or two in future issues ?
