The 60 million dollar question. (Fishing related)
woodenboater replied to Acountdeleted's topic in General Discussion
Either an island somewhere out of Pointe Au Baril or the West Arm, maybe West Bay area. -
I think on top of time served, he should also lose his license for life. Never drive again.Ever. I fear that he would roll the dice and dui again when he gets out. As well, I hope the family takes him to court and hurts him where he'll feel it most.

One of the KEY things when paddling whitewater (for example) is that you are entrusting members of your group with your life if things go south. and they are counting on you to do the same. Have been on both ends of this equation (not life threatening but a rough time) and knowing the group has your back is beyond reassuring. It's also very important that the group dynamics are such that there won't be any shaming if one chooses to not run a particular set on a given day. It happens. If the testosterone level is at 11, it's probably best to find another group to hang with. The following story by the New York Times, while not exactly the same as my example, shows what can happen when the group dynamics/heirarchy are such that people don't question things. Its an amazing read, not surprising since it's the NYT. http://www.nytimes.com/projects/2012/snow-fall/#/?part=tunnel-creek

and knees slightly bent to ward off rocks otherwise you'll slam them hard. and DO NOT stand up if there's strong current. one of the cardinal rules in whitewater boating
-
While the water will be neutral buoyant, if the waders fill up with water (really, we all have belts right ?) then dragging those balloon sacks is going to be an epic battle. Real world experience - tore a hole in my drysuit by the knee during a spring whitewater run. Leg filled up and getting around the river, which was already screaming, was no easy task. So yeah, think about dragging a large garbage bag full of water through current and tell me how it goes Also heard on the radio that they were 'experienced kayakers'. Will be harsh but they definitely were not imo and they paid dearly for the lack of cold weather, moving water knowledge. Another thing about paddling in the winter, EVERYTHING freezes up. Zippers WILL NOT unzip, throw bags will not throw as easily etc.. Stay safe and be careful around rivers in the winter.

some pfd's are short so they don't interfere with the skirt and tunnel. all depends on what type of kayak is in use. as well some pads designed for whitewater will have a 'stilton' grip panel on the inside so there's minimal ride up. very important if you're swimming frothy water. My Stohlquist has these gripper panels and they are worth the extra expense

I haven't read the entire piece but what I will say is that when Bush used the word 'Crusade' after 9-11, I thought that was a huge risk. That word is absolutely frought with history and context and it was either used specifically to invoke fear and to shore his Christian base or because it sounded tough. Imo, it was reckless to use that word and he/they should have seen that it might foment hysteria among the extremists. Why poke the bear ? and here we are today...

So while researching The Crusades, I came across this piece. Haven't look hard into the site's history or background so take it for what it's worth. http://theconversation.com/did-the-crusades-lead-to-islamic-state-54478

Never paddled that section, usually run Streetsville from the rink down to the lake in March. In spring, water can be honking and as mentioned strainers /sweepers are deadly if you can't avoid or know how to swim over them. If they weren't dressed properly (drysuit for me) then it wouldn't take long for them to succumb and a heart attack is highly probable, depending on age etc.. I hope the other paddler didn't go under the ice as he could be trapped anywhere downstream. I hope they find them quick so family can have closure.

How would you call this one? (impaired charge)

This story is in the Toronto Sun so I'm going to hold off excoriating the cops. Even though they're almost always siding with the police in difficult situations, they love a good story more and this has it in spades. I think there's more to the story than what we're reading. A man is dead so I'm not going to comment on his what ifs etc.. -
I'd be raising hell like you wouldn't believe, but to blame this on Justin is off target. Hell should be directed at the landlord who did the work and made the woman homeless. Their feet shld be scorched till they make it right for her. Yes the grass *may* be greener but having travelled and seen how little people have or stuffed up things are elsewhere, I'll take our imperfect country over any other 24/7/365. It doesn't mean settling for the status quo, we SHOULD be demanding and expecting more from all our governments, from local to federal. As people more impoverished than us would say about our complaining... "First World problems"
-
Exactly. If one is fortunate enough to travel to other parts of this giant marble, then one really does come to appreciate how lucky we truly are here.

let's hope this is an uptrend for stocks overall.

for some reason, I'm thinking of the movie "The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming"

hmm, just heard one guy talk and it sounds pretty far fetched. solve global warming by throwing particles into the air to deflect some of the sun's rays ?

6 jets is just a dog and pony show and won't make much difference if any when they're grounded. We'll be sending in troops to train the Kurds I believe and they have serious beef and won't back down and are probably one of the best hopes of fighting ISIS. So while other countries do the air war, Canada will be on the ground iirc. From all I've read from people on the ground and with knowledge of the fight, pounding them with heavy metal is doing jack squat. They're like mice and rats, they just scatter and regroup. This is not traditional warfare and military leaders and governments need to think creatively and differently, but sadly they're stuck in the sand and spinning their wheels. The MC is, imo, having influence in this fight as they're the only ones with anything to gain. Sadly this will be Afghanistan and Iraq v2.0 etc

This here is a really disgraceful act by our country. Same as the Japanese. Same as the Chinese after the steel road was built. We weren't perfect then but we've improved a helluva lot since then. We still have some ways to go but I'd sooner be here than anywhere else on this giant marble. Learning from our past shouldn't be that difficult...

can you still buy spincast reels ? that was like so many moons ago when I was a kid lol me at high park fishing for sunfish

he'd be using spinning gear if he were

this is all on the landlord. they should have to cover all her costs while her place is being renovated and really, was she even given any notice that it was being done ? I'd be letting people know who the bldg owners are and shame them tbh.to do this while she;s in the hospital is just plain mean. this has nothing to do with JT imo.

In the process of losing my brother

stay strong and I hope you get to see him soon. -
While I don't think he's fit to wear a badge, ever, I do believe that it's possible police *may not* have known if there were any people still left on the streetcar (not sure if TTC driver told them or not). But yes, they should have closed the doors and let him cool his jets and wait until a proper response team was on scene. This is basically the same thing that happened years ago to Edmund Yu. Nothing has been learned re: mental health issues. A guy waking with his junk in one hand and a knife in the other is imo, obviously unbalanced. Armchair qb'ing I know but that's how I see it and I've watched all the clips shown (had access to video and could stop, start, back up etc)
