  1. here for info Kids don't have equipment no excuse, 1000 free loner rods. Worth spreading the word and perhaps introduce a few more to our great sport/activity.
  2. Thanks guys. Good luck with the Dofasco Tourney Dave, and check your PM.
  3. Headed down to Pt. Maitland this morning because of the great weather forecast. Launched at Mailand and went right out to my spot, after a 15 minute ride at 3/4 throttle my line was in the water. Soon as I sat back to relax a hit! I set the hook and began to fight one of Eries huge smallmouths. Off it went, 2 jumps in the air and it was in close to the boat. The line went loose, I felt a snap and tought for sure my 8 lb. line had snapped or the knot had failed. Neither, it had just thrown the hook and that was that, but it sure felt like a line break! The bight this morning was fantastic, I just wish my wife had today off or my son hadn't had other plans because the bass were really putting on the feed bag. About 2 weeks ago we hit the same location and nothing, today though was terrific! I lost count of how many hits I had and lost several other nice ones as well. One nice 17 1/2" bass did get boated after a pole bending and jumping battle. Unfortunately I forgot the camera but did have my cell phone camera handy. With the bouncing up and down in the waves and one handedly trying to get the camera option set up on the phone I managed to snap one picture of it still in the net resting in the water. After unhooking I took a measurement and noticed a tumor growing on the bottom side of the fish just near the gills. He swam away after being released to hopefully entertain someone again one day. Here is the cell picture, after emailing to my computer, resizing and posted on Photobucket I hope it turns out OK. The sun reflecting off the water in and around the net is distracting, sorry about the poor quality. OH Yeah!! I just remembered something. I saw something in the Grand River as I was trolling (later in the day after Erie fishing) and I was having a hard time to figure out what it could be. As I came closer I discovered it was small deer. It was swimming with only it's head out of the water. I think it got spooked and it took off to shore and climbed up on the bank and off into the bushes. It was a treat to see this on the lower Grand, I managed to get the cell camera out and got a really poor long distance picture but not worth even trying to post it.
  4. Rich and Dozer both have good theories. I think they just like shiny objects, plain and simple. I have seen them go after split shot and swivels and clips. As long as there is something that can catch their eye then they think hmm, lets get a taste of that, after all they haven't hands like we do so they can't play touchy feely first. I heard a comedian comment about how tropical fish in a tank will inhale the turd dropped from a fish above, spit it out , swim away, come back and do it all over again, same turd, same fish, same fish tank. Witnessed them do that too when I raised tropical fish. Stupid fish, that's maybe the answer?
  5. They're trying to scam you. Has anyone been fined yet for no charts? Can you imagine if it were law to have a map of every town, city or village that we would dive our car into on hand so we won't get lost? What a joke. Mind you, it's probably only a matter of time until chart makers lobby the politicians to make it law. Thanks for the clarification Rick.
  6. Went out Sunday for a drive to the Falls or where ever we would end up at. Started out nice but it soon clouded over however we were just ahead of the storm all along our drive on the old #8 HWY through the peninsula and hadn't a clue how bad things were in Hamilton. the cell phone rang and it was our son calling to say he was going to be late coming home because he was stuck in traffic as the Red Hill Parkway was shut down in both directions, probably due to an accident. Told him thanks for calling and we weren't home anyway. He says well I tried the home phone and it wouldn't work. I thought that was weird but would deal with it later. We continued on our way enjoying the drive. I called him again on the cell and he says the reason the road was closed and he was trapped was because it was flooded just ahead. He had locked the car up and walked down the HWY and saw the water and a cop was standing in it waist deep. Well we didn't arrive home until later and PH JR. was already home with lots of stories to tell. Later my wife sent him downstairs to the deep freezer to get a pizza out for a light supper. He steps down to the basement and soaks his feet on wet carpeting. The sewer drain had backed up. Now I knew why a bunch of neighbours had been standing out at the curb when we arrived home. Turns out the whole street had the same thing happen, some worse than others, but all were effected in some way.Turns out the entire east end was hit hard with about 4" of rain in less than a couple of hours falling on already saturated ground. Now it's time to deal with the insurance and the restoration contractor. Luckily not all was lost in the basement but it will have to be redone, walls, sub flooring, carpet, etc. I'm just curious to hear if anyone else in the same situation? Sorry for the long winded tale, but it is an eye opener!
  7. Summer of 1990 every weekend it rained and I had a job with every weekend off. This was my son's first year and we still had our motorhome. We didn't use it once all summer and sold it in September. What a kick in the ass that was, as you can see I haven't forgotten it after all these years. We must be setting a record this season with the unreal amount of rainfall and temperatures. I went out to the garage yesterday morning to pull the boat out to go fishing. The sky was dark and cloudy looking over the mountain and towards where I wanted to go. I contemplated it for an hour and the cloud mass got closer. I decided not to go out. Then it got cooler and in the afternoon it got really hot so I came home and put the A/C on. At 4:00 I went to pick my wife up and it was cold again, and cloudy. Decided to start up the BBQ, everytime I went to pull it out of the garage it started to rain. Put it back and the sun came out, decide to do it again and the rain started. Put it away and the sun came out! Off and on it went like this for half an hour.In the end the sun won the battle but now I find out the steak I had just bought in the same afternoon was bad, back to the store it goes and frozen hamburgers came out of the freezer! I too have joined the club of the disenchanted and want the local weatherman's resignation The weather network is no better, at least 3 times this year they were totally off as to wind direction. The last time we went out on the water they said we were to have a NW wind...it was E, N/E, on Lake Erie that can make a big difference.
  8. Just a suggestion, why not try to contact the powers that be at Dollarama and maybe OFC or they can generate some publicity? I'm sure that if this works out it could be a great stunt for either or both. Perhaps this could be a real plus for Dollarama having their tackle featured in a "derby", especially if some decent fish are caught. Maybe some good will come out of it, I mean other than some fun for those who partake. I agree with the comment regarding #6.
  9. 12' aluminum would be better, however 500 bucks is a great price. Be a nice little boat for ponds like Valens, Mountsberg or Binbrook. You might get it onto the top of a pickup truck box but the weight is 154 lbs. Weight capacity is actually pretty good at 500 lbs. A Lowe 10' Jon only weighs 80 lbs. but only has a capacity of 275lbs. A 12' Lowe Jon: 90lbs. and 330 lbs. but the wider 12' x 32" is 140lbs and 527 lb capacity. So in comparison at 500 lb capacity the little Costco boat is respectable....and cheap at 500 bucks! If I had only had a truck to put it in...
  10. I was just in a Dollarama the other day and I think the telescopic rod is $2 and the reel is another $2. That will leave you 6 bucks for dollar spam for bait and lures. I could be wrong though... I do have a few Dollarama lures and they have worked. My son actually picked up a $2 rod back in the spring because he just couldn't say no to it, I rigged it up with an old 1970's Mitchel 300 reel but none of us has tried it yet. Your dollar derby idea sounds like a good plan.
  11. For 50 bucks what the heck? But then when I think about it, Walmart used to sell combos like this one for $25 and all through the southern states, (eastern coastal at least) combos like this range from 20 to 50 bucks at Walmart, flea markets and tackle shops.
  12. Nissan outboards are Tohatsu. They are sold worldwide so parts should be available if needed. There is a Nissan dealer in Oakville and the marine dealer in Port Dover beside Tim Horton's also sells them. Is your scanoe rated for a 5hp? That would move along real nice.
  13. The taxi cruiser, that's nasty! Matttude, we've been checked twice, although not recently, by the OPP near the narrows. Not while shore fishing though but I betcha if they did they would be passing out more than one summons per day!
  14. Glad they caught some cheaters on the island. We were on the lower Grand R. on Sunday and the CO was around in an unmarked boat without any markings. I won't discuss the details any more clearly than that so as not to let the cat out of the bag as the plain look is probably what they are trying to accomplish, even though it is somewhat like the unmarked police car approach. If you are on the look out you can spot them a mile away. Funny thing was when they were around hitting up all the boats one of the boats fishing decided it was time to beach it and have a shore picnic. Hmmmmm, wonder why?
  15. Check the overflow on your sink, if it has one. This is where the odor is probably coming from. Maybe the baking soda advise may work? What happens is crud develops in the passageway and if you have the type of sink where the overflow inlet is on the front of the sink, nearest you, the odor will be more noticeable. We had that problem in the last place we lived but it didn't become noticeable until the weeks before we moved out so I let the next guy deal with it. Could try pouring bleach down it?
  16. LOL, Thanks Jocko I think it was the use of "are" rather than "our" that played tricks with my eyes.... or maybe it just messed with my brain. Good one Terry! Or maybe it's the fact that the tax is a hidden tax in the States where we pay the tax at the end source. So it's a 150 plus GST.
  17. Am I blind? I can't see where Scott says the boat is rated for a 150. I see that he says they have a 150 on it now though.
  18. You just reminded me that I do need to get my E brake fixed. Glad you're OK, but how bad is the damage $$$
  19. Hey Glenn, here's a commercial running on the TV up here this summer. OPP, Ont Hydro & Red Green Looks like you had a nice day of catching.
  20. I have a locking clamp around the clamp turn handles and a locking bolt much like that on a car's wheel through the transom. Not likely that anyone will take a 25 hp off because of the weight but I figure better safe than sorry. If it does get stolen then at least the insurance company can't say I didn't try to do anything to prevent it.
  21. Billy Bob made some good points. A lot of folks say 4 stroke or nothing, but what size motor or boat are the guys saying this running? Remember a 20 or 25 hp tiller with the operator (especially a heavy dude) at the throttle is quite different than a larger motor with a skinny guy at the wheel on a console boat. Every pound added at the back of a boat can make a difference, that 20, 30 or 40 pounds in added motor weight is a factor. BTW, I have no problem adding oil to my 2 stroke, pretty simple, just add 1/2 a small bottle to 12.5 litres of gas or a full one to a full tank which is about 24 litres just before putting the gas into the tank. As for maintenance I just change the bottom end oil in the fall, fog the engine and grease the fittings, done!
  22. Check your owners manual over carefully and read what GVW and CGVW means. When you add up what your combined gross vehicle weight rating totals you may be surprised as you will probably be over the limitations allowed. Such as total weights of: Driver, passengers, luggage, gas in the car's tank, fishing gear, boat's gas tank, trailer, motor, gear and whatever other stuff you have on board. You will probably find that you are going to exceed the combined capacity very quickly. I looked but could not find any mention about a 1000lb towing capacity, it probably does say somewhere but I couldn't find it. In the owners manual you will see that it states this: TRAILER TOWING WARNING: Never tow a trailer with this vehicle. You vehicle is not equipped to tow. No towing packages are available through an authorized dealer. Focus Manual Towing Guide That said yes I have witnessed quite a few small cars on the HWY dragging a trailer of some sort behind them. I had a buddy when I was a kid who's father used to drag the 3 of them north every summer in an old '64 VW Beetle with a 12' boat strapped on the roof, a motor in the trunk plus, their gear and luggage. So do what you want but be aware of your limitations.
  23. Sounds like a reasonable price. Is it a short shaft and pull start? I think at the price it probably is. Also are there any other charges that were not mentioned to you? My 2005, 25hp, 2 stroke (not E Tec) Johnson long shaft with electric start was more than that when it was new.
  24. All the best to him for a smooth operation and a speedy healthy recovery.
