  1. I was told by my Johnson dealer to use Johnson's own brand of stabilizer and I wouldn't have warranty issues. I do know from experience if I don't use it in every tank I will at some point in mid season end up having a rough running motor that will not clear up until I either run the tank dry or dump it and start all over with fresh fuel. So I put it in every time I top up the tank to avoid trouble out on the water. And yes there is a difference between Can. Tire stabilizer and the brand name, the smell alone of Johnson stabilizer will almost knock you over. Talk to your dealer and see what they have to offer in the way of an additive that won't compromise your warranty.
  2. As quoted from Steve's website. When you heading down this way Cliff?
  3. Yep, 2 cyl is smoother. Yep Merc is a Tohatsu which is an OK motor but if you set your mind on the Merc then shop around at Nissan outboard motor dealers for a better price, there's one in Oakville. Compare the weight factor before your final decision. If weight is important, which it probably is, then the 1 cylinder motor may be a better bet.
  4. Really nice Lew You're going to have many many hours of happiness!
  5. Great read and many fantastic photos. Now time for an old joke revamped to suit the situation: What's the difference between Angelo and a canoe? A canoe tips!
  6. Your first priority in adult life should have been to treat the old guy with a lot of respect and admiration and you should have stayed married to her. If you had then you would have enough funding to support your fishing hobby. I say this out of my own learned experience! :wallbash:
  7. All shows and exhibitions like this are on the decline. The cost is a lot for some companies to bear for the actual return on the investment. Company I used to work for did the Burlington, Oakville, Hamilton, mall shows and other Home Shows all the time, now they do none. The public has become tired of the same old thing year after year after year, another drawback of an aging majority. As some said on other related threads, why drop 30 to a hundred bucks on just getting in and getting there when they can spend that money at a local shop? As for lodges can you imagine the cost for them to set up a display? Transportation, lodging and meals would be a lot to dish out. Those that went before have probably decided to make their presence at the Sportsmens Show instead, the Granddaddy of them all and most guests of the Fishing and Boat Show will go to the granddaddy anyway. Don't forget the power of the internet, we no longer have to go to a show to find out what is out there, how much they charge and what openings are available, we can sit in a big comfortable chair and surf the offerings and travel the world with a beer or coffee in hand. For viewing new tackle we now have the big stores like BPS, LeBaron and for most Ontarians a short hop across the border fills that need and we save money when we fill the tank up in U.S gallons as a bonus. The shows are dying, their time has come and gone. However, I just might go to the Sportsmens Show this year if I have the time and something or someone encourages me to do so.
  8. Depends on the size of the motor you need. Evinrude hasn't used this technology in the smaller motors yet. 30 hp or less and you have either 2 stroke or 4 stroke as the only options. For the amount of gas you use in a smaller motor a 2 stroke is OK, just make sure the wind is from the bow. But then I have seen smoke coming from some 4 strokes as well, maybe there are some bad valves or piston rings on some motors.
  9. Unfortunately probably not worth as much as you would like it to be worth or think it's worth. We just sold off what was left of my father's coin collection. We had some pretty old coins including several mint sets like you have and there was enough coins to fill one of those big plastic storage bins you can buy at Walmart plus some more. Trust me, for what we got none of us got rich, if I had my way I and the room for them it would have been as well to have just kept them. My share was enough to buy a tank of gas, some groceries and a case of beer. Enjoy the set for it's beauty and don't ever disassemble the case and touch the coins. Like said, put them away and maybe someday...
  10. Definitely one of the top TV shows of all time. I never started to watch it though until it went into it's first round of syndication back around 1980 or so. Loved the theme song too, and on the big screen version of Mash the words were sung not just a music track. M.A.S.H theme
  11. Thanks for some of the comments guys...Lew, Gerritt. I was not disturbed by the cleaning. It was like a couple of you said maybe a bonk on the head first then on with the rest of the job. I don't know if the eel is still alive after decapitation or it is just nerve reflexes? Either way I don't think none of us are expert enough to say for sure as I don't see anyone with an MD after their name. It was the eating of the beating heart that was strange. And I said above in a previous reply I can reminisce about being less than 5 years old and witnessing the chicken and goose killing in my own back yard and didn't take offense to that. BTW, no offense taken from the negative comments, all have their right to opinion, however some comments are a little bit on the offensive side but I can take it, after all I've been married twice so no matter what is said it's no worse than my ex has said before or what I have to endure everyday at home for the past 22 years
  12. You all may be right. Just eating the beating heart that got to me. The cleaning OK, not bad after all gutting is not for the squeamish, but the gasping head was well.... And barbaric might be too strong a word for this. I can still remember my father killing chickens by lobbing the head off and seeing the body running around the yard. But the still beating eels heart was what did it and made me post as it was still on my mind this morning. And yes we have many cultural differences in this world.
  13. Flipped through the channels on the tube last night and came across the show F Word. I have seen it once before and have seen some of chef G. Ramsey's other shows. Other than his controversial nature this show was really barbaric. It was based on his desire to bring eels back to the popularity they once had on the British menu. OK, so what's the big deal? Now I don't usually criticize how people handle their catch, whether they enjoy shore lunches, catch and release or keep the allowable quota but I have to say I was almost sick to my stomach at how the eels were handled and had to change the channel. The show showed an interesting scene on catching eels in the Thames River, pretty neat. But then went on to show the how they are cleaned, OK I'm have never known how eels are eaten cleaned or prepared but this guy on the show grabs a live eel, chops it's head off, slices it down the gut and takes the eel in one hand - the knife in the other and rips the the innards out. OK, bad but not so bad as to switch the channel. Then he goes into a restaurant with some famous Japanese chef in the kitchen. This guy does pretty much the same but is really barbaric. He grabs a live eel, chops it head off, runs his knife from the neck to tail ripping it in two, scrapes the guts out while the bodiless head is sitting on the block gasping for life. He then separates the still beating heart from the rest of the eel and offers it up to Ramsey for a treat! He is standing there with the eels beating heart in his hand and was about to eat it and then I hit the remote and killed the show so I really don't know if he ate it or not. Now I have no clue as to what is acceptable or somewhat normal but this seemed came across to me as really barbaric and inhumane. Am I looking at this the right way or am I being overly sensitive? I just googled this and got a you tube link, I didn't copy and paste it or watch the whole you tube version but if anyone wants to see it you can find it on the net.
  14. YEP that's exactly what it is. Pt. Colbourne Marine has been selling fish camp motors for years. I considered one but decided to buy new from a different marine dealer. After reading some stories about used camp motors I decided to run like the wind....well at least a light breeze
  15. She must have had a colleague pretty p-ssed at her to pull her over, can you imagine an OPP ticketing another OPP? But second guessing, I imagine she was grabbed by a radar and radar cameras don't discriminate between cars. So then there is temporarily one less cruiser on the roads. LOL
  16. What No shooting! How else are you going to get the slowpokes off the ramp?
  17. Steel boat? It must be pretty old? I can remember fishing at Port Maitland at the mouth of the Grand with my father and there was a guy there renting steel rowboats. Man they were heavy! And they were old even then! No motor and rowing in a river current, that was work. The only other steel boat I have seen (other than Wayne's photo) is at LaSalle Park in Burlington when they put the docks in the marina in the spring and out in the fall. Like Wayne said, a good work boat.
  18. OK, I know I'm huge, but I have lost and gained more weight than the mass of a blue whale. I know what works for me and how to do it, or at least what has worked. First off your own personal state of mind, determination really helps. Not some outsider telling you to slim down. Several years ago I dropped over 60 lbs. in less then 3 months. It was not the result of exercise I'll tell you that. It was diet, I would have 3 to 5 bread type products (whole wheat, flax seed multigrain whatever) a big glass of fresh made vegetable juice in the morning containing carrot, celery, ginger and an apple, if I had fresh parsley it went in sometimes too. Lunch would be usually a multigrain wrap with lean ham, lettuce, onion, peppers, lettuce and either mustard or ranch salad dressing, it was usually stuffed and bursting! Supper was 3 or 4 vegetable servings and meat was eaten with supper about 3 times a week, the other days was either cheese, beans or tofu for protein substitution. For evening or lunch I would make a smoothie from fresh fruit, juice, yogurt, ice and a teaspoon of regular white sugar (I hate sugar substitutes! Yech! and they are not good for you.) I was did loose the pounds, this choice of diet was not really intended to just loose weight, I wanted to eat this way. I continued to eat like this for about a year and slimmed down quite a bit. That was one way I did it, like I said I didn't go to the gym I was off work on compensation for an awfully long time during all of this. The other method that worked was to just follow the Canada food guide and record your daily food intake on a chart. It's amazing when you do that, there were so many times that I would go to grab a snack, stop and look at the day's intake and then put it back and grab something else that I could have. It is very easy to forget what you have eaten in the morning when it's 8 PM in the evening. The Canada food guide does work! Good luck on your quest. Now my own problem is to get my mind in the right psychological frame of mind to do it all again and to stay with it! That is truly the hardest part of it all!
  19. If the water wasn't aerated then they could have died from a lack of oxygen. A bucket doesn't hold that much water and whatever amount of oxygen was in the tap water would be quickly consumed. An aquarium air pump with an airstone or an airpump for a minnow bucket may have helped them survive. The chlorine in the tap water also may have been the final blow but likely lack of oxygen did them in Don't forget that when they were frozen or partly froze their metabolism was slowed right down to a deep sleep hibernation and this is why they recovered when warmed from the tap water, hypothermia? I'm just guessing
  20. Amazing! Did you have the heart to eat this one after all that? I think I would have 2nd thoughts about it. Although I know you aren't legally allowed to transport or release live fish I'd be tempted to take it back to it's home. That is one determined fish.
  21. The Rangers are a good deal right now, but just check out all the financing details with a fine tooth comb to see if the low interest rates are really good and check with your bank before signing on the line. You are better off with a brand new truck than a used one especially with the deals now. If you are going to spend up to 20 G's then why buy used? Get a new one, it might have a couple less bells and whistles but there is nothing, NOTHING like a brand new car! Remember the Ranger is a Mazda with a different tag on the grill. Keep us up to date on what you buy and happy motoring.
  22. Spiel..... overhead crane operator. You wouldn't accidentally drop a coil on that green hat down on the floor now would you Just joking...damn Stelco US Steel foremen. Just remembering a bad boss I had in the old 1210 mill in the late seventies. But joking aside I now work at the big orange box in Ancaster advising customers on windows and doors. I no longer work on commission and the pay is not great but the benefits are good and there is a paycheck in the bank every other Friday!
  23. Won't gp wrong here. Mariposa inn...formerly Keewadin Inn Stayed here many times but not in the last couple of years since it became a Best Western. Used to be reasonble and would give a deal if pressured. But with the big chain in there now who knows? As said the Highwayman is decent too.
  24. Very sorry to hear the news Lew. All the best to you and your family. You and your mother are in my thoughts and prayers.
  25. A couple of you may remember I was inquiring with fellow board members about driving to Myrtle Beach away back this past July. Well we did make the trip, loaded up the old Ford and headed south. Not a problem all the way there and back, the old box on wheels performed fantastically! We took our time going down with one night stopover. We didn't have a motel/hotel booked and I'm glad we didn't as we ended up in a nice smaller beach front motel with the pool right outside our door and the beach a few steps away, perfect. Didn't get any fishing done, talked a lot about it though. Played a few games of golf, (we are all novices BTW) and a game of mini put. Spent lots of time relaxing and enjoying the water and sand. Found a good deal on salt water fishing gear at a couple of nearby flee markets but that wasn't until the last couple of days that we were there. At the Myrtle Beach Indoor flea Market you could give a $25 deposit and return the gear at weeks end, if you decided to buy the pole and reel combo you just forfeited the dough, if you should decide to give it back then it would cost only $10 for the rental. Wish I had known that on my first day and not the second to last! A bargain and a half! Hope you enjoy the pictures, this is only a few of the 200 or so that were taken! Harry I just had to get my picture taken with this sign! Couldn't resist it, with a name like that it just had to be a great place to eat! Some of you that have driven I95 may know this place. The nightly fireworks show was a treat, what better can it be? A beer, pool, nice and warm water and night air. Right out the door and into the pool. Baby stingray caught on the State Park Pier which was quickly unhooked and shown to the kids by the park ranger. Pikehunter Jr and I couldn't resist striking up a conversation with a girl surf fishing, my wife wasn't too pleased though... The moon......and the sun Myrels Inlet JR was pretty pleased with himself doing 90% of the driving on the way back home.
