Thanks for the replies. It actually wasn't too difficult to fix. Definitely easier than replacing the whole unit; and about $200 plus taxes cheaper too. I did have a bit of a Homer Simpson moment though. There is a short piece of rope attached to the door to help pull it closed if you don't have an automatic opener. I usually keep it tied to the handle but it had come undone. I was just about to give up on trying to figure out why the door would reverse whenever it got to within about 8" of the ground when I realized that the rope was tripping the sensors... doh! The sensors do work. I think it had been running with chewed up gears for quite some time now. I always thought it made much more noise than it should. It is much quieter now that it has new gears. I am pretty sure that it is Chamberlain that manufactured the opener for Sears.

Has anybody here ever replaced the drive and worm gears for a Craftsman garage door opener? Is there anything specific that I should be wary of? It looks like I am going to have to remove quite a bit in order to get the two gears out.

Didn't the asian long horn beetle get to North America in skids? Lumber can spread insects too. I think kiln dried would be okay; but how do enforce that when the would is already cut into one foot lengths. I do my camping in Algonquin; I have always been told that I cannot have would from the GTA. Fire wood purchased from someone local to your camp site should be legal.

It always seems that when I hear about someone with a cracked hull that it is a Tracker boat. I refer to them as Cracker boats. I have seen others do the same. I hope that you do some restitution.

Electric Lawn Mower and small engine repair
John Bacon replied to charlesn's topic in General Discussion
I have been using a rechargeable since the mid nineties. I generally don't have a problem cutting an average sized yard; but mine is not self propelled. I do find that the condition of the grass makes a big difference though; long wet grass will wear the battery down pretty quick. I can cut twice as much lawn when the grass is dry. If you still are having problems, take Big Cliffs advice and get it fixed under warranty. Sear's wanted $180 for a new battery for mine. I have seen rechargeable mowers sell for less than that. -
While it is true that cooling the battery will reduce the amount of current immediately available; it actually prolongs the life the of battery (assuming that it doesn't freeze which according to another post occurs at -60 for a fully charged battery). Since the post is about storage not about how to maximize the power for immediate use; the cold is actually beneficial.
-
COLD is good for the battery. One of the benefits of storing a battery on a concrete floor is that it will help keep the battery cooler which prolongs the life of the battery. Keeping it charged is the most important thing.

I dropped off a Minn Kota motor for repairs at Boat Tech in Pickering. I showed up to pick the motor yesterday morning as it was supposted to be ready. Unfortunately they motor was ready. So the owner dropped the motor off at my house early this morning before I left for work. It is nice to see that some places are still willing to go the extra mile to help the customer.

I wouldn't be surprised if it is of prety good quality. Costco often does have some incredibly price deals on seasonal items.

Generally speaking navigable waterways are public. There are some exceptions such as Long Point and the south end of Scugog. I doubt that he had the right to kick you out but wouldn't be 100% certain.

You could rig a switch into the wires that connect the batteries in parallel. Flick the switch to the off position when you are charging; the batteries would not be connected to each other with the switch in the off position, so using both banks should be okay. I am not sure what would happen if you forgot to switch the connection off and left the batteries connected in parallel while they were both connected to the charge.

What about your handle... will you be FWBASSMAN next week? ;-)

When I was looking for boats last year I was told that 10% of the motors a manufacturer sells do not have to meet the latest standards. This is why traditional two strokes are still sold. This is what I was told by the salesman; I didn't bother to verify his comments. I did check the Legend site though; they still offer two strokes.

Where to catch suckers in Scarborough?
John Bacon replied to Fisherpete's topic in General Discussion
I think further upstream or in Highland Creek would be better suckers than the mouth of the Rouge. Have you considered M.C. Rockets as a substitute for cut baits. I know some of the charter boats are going this route. -
Yes, but so is spending $3,000 less on the motor in the first place. When I said that they wouldn't save; I meant that after taking both the price of the motor and the price of gas into consideration they won't come out ahead. I figure that I spent at most $500-$600 a year to put gas in my 55hp 2 stroke. If I take interest and time value to money into consideration; a four stroke would never save enough on gas to compensate for the extra three grand on the initial purchase. Someone who's running their boat eight hours a day for a hundred days a year will probably save with a four stroke; I think the average fisherman will save with a 2 stroke.

Long enough to remember when you didn't have to be a member to post ;-)... I think it was 1999 when I first posted here.

I checked the Legend web site; there is a $2,600 price difference between a 50hp 2 stroke vs. a 50hp 4 stroke. That is almost $3,000 after taxes and more if you are financing it. I don't think the average fisherman is going to save money by buying a four stroke.

I don't have experience with Seylor but I have enjoyed taking my Sea Doo inflatable to a lot of back lakes. I use a 2.5 Nissan with mine; it would be useless to paddle.

All of my Ray Bans have been great. My friend used to get me a 67% discount when she worked at Bausch & Lomb; otherwise I wouldn't have quite so many pairs. I think Bausch & Lomb has sold the brand... I am not sure if that has effected quality.

It is the Finesse line that they are selling.

Bass Pro is selling Rapala fishing line for $1.99 a spool. They have an assortment of 6 to 17 pound test... mostly 8 pound test.

Trolling Motor Help! Minn Kota Edge on a Legend Boat?
John Bacon replied to Minnow's topic in General Discussion
I had a cable steer Minn Kota on my 34" deep Alumacraft V-hull and it worked fine. I am not sure about the new models but my cable steer Minn Kota only required four bolts even though it had six holes. So it really didn't require a large area to mount it to. That was a 1994 model so it may not apply to the newer ones. -
Does this mean I would need two licences if I bought a hand held? A base license for the radio and an operators license for me?

Backing up into waves is a bad idea... probably worse than having your cannon balls snagged.

I remember reading about some kids (I think it was in Florida) who got 15 in years in jail for removing a stop sign. They were convicted of manslaughter after someone was killed at the intersection. Something for these kids to keep in mind... Why the citiot comment though? Could they not have been rural idiots or suburban idiots?
