  1. Still, threatening not to hire studends from a university that gave him am honourary degrees is getting pretty silly. Why should the students suffer because their university gave him the degree? I doubt that they were consulted. Hopefully some of the 150,000 teachers that she claims to represent make in clear that they do not support her threats.
  2. http://www.nationalpost.com/news/canada/toronto/Union+student+teachers+over+Harris+degree/3129533/story.html Philip Ling, Canwest News Service · Wednesday, Jun. 9, 2010 The Ontario Teachers' Federation says it objects "in the strongest possible terms" to Nipissing University's plan to confer an honorary degree on former Ontario premier Mike Harris -- going so far as to suggest its members will not place the university's student teachers if the ceremony goes ahead. In a May 12 letter to Nipissing's board of governors, association president Reno Melatti called Mr. Harris's degree--planned for Friday --a "misguided plan of action." "We find it incongruous that a university that prides itself on being a school for future teachers and for aboriginal students would deem it appropriate to confer any honour on an individual who decimated the funding of K-12 and post-secondary education in Ontario," said Mr. Melatti, who wrote the letter on behalf of Ontario's 155,000 public school teachers. "Given the insidious treatment of the profession by former premier Mike Harris, and his total lack of respect for its members, we cannot predict how teachers may demonstrate their displeasure should the university ... confer an honorary degree on [him]," the letter reads. He said some teachers have indicated that they may "reconsider" accepting student teachers from the university for their mandatory placements in schools. "We encourage the profession by encouraging teachers to do whatever we can to assist [the students] in their program. But at the same time, we can't compel them to do that," Mr. Melatti said. The federation has not taken a position on the matter, he said, but its executive will meet in late June to determine if a recommendation against placing Nipissing students will be necessary. The university, located in Mr. Harris's hometown of North Bay, announced in May that the former premier will receive the honour because he "was supportive to the process that saw Nipissing University receive its charter as an independent degree-granting institution in 1992." 3. It wouldn't make sense to require a boater to carry their driver's license when they are boating because you don't need a drivers license to operate a boat. People under 16 can get a boaters card even though they are too young to drive a car. That doesn't necessarily make it legal for your buddy to drive a boat... I am sure there is a law against disobeying a court order. I am not sure if the OPP would normally check that.
  4. I would be reluctant to use pressure treated would for the bunks as it is corrosive to aluminum. You may be okay with carpet between the bunks and your boat; but I wouldn't risk it. I also went the route of just putting glide slicks on wood bunks with no carpet... then my boat sank I am sure that it was purely co-incidental. My boat sank while tied to the dock during a rain storm. Other than the boat sinking, I didn't have any trouble with just glide slicks instead of carpet. I just used contruction grade wood and stained it. I sold the trailer shortly after so I cannot comment on the durabiliy of stained bunks.
  5. As previously pointed out by Jer, the additional wind resistance caused by generating electricity from the wind would cause your car to burn more fuel. The additional energy required to power the car would exceed the amount of energy that was produced by the wind; it's called the law of conservation of energy. Mount wind generators on a car would actually waste energy; not save it.
  6. The power comes from the exhaust being pushed out the back of the engine. The jet fuel requires oxygen to burn. The air intake at the front of the engine is serves to provide air (which contains oxygen) for the combustion process. If the air itself produced the power then air planes would require fuel to operate.
  7. Yes, especially if pike have recently invaded or been introduced to a lake that has traditionally been a muskie lake. It does not seem to happen as often in lakes where pike and muskie have co-existed for a long time.
  8. The Honorary Degree A rich Texan told the president of the University of Texas, "I want to set you up with a billion-dollar endowment fund, with but one condition." "What's the condition?" asked the U.T president. "I want you to give my horse an honorary degree. She's served me faithfully for fifteen years and she deserves a B.T. degree, a Bachelor's of Transportation." The president said, "I've got to consult my trustees. I'll get back to you." The trustees debated an hour until one senior trustee, who had appeared to be napping during the whole discussion, said softly, "I think we should take his money and give the horse the degree." Another trustee piped up, "But wouldn't you be embarrassed to give an honorary degree to a horse?" "Nope," said the old man. "In fact, it would be the first time I can remember that we gave an honorary degree to a whole horse!"
  9. Some people need this more than others... http://www.metronews.ca/ottawa/live/article/539102--better-smelling-farts-through-the-magic-of-exit-aromas " A Ukrainian perfume company claims to have invented a jelly bean capable of producing perfumed farts. The candies are being produced in a number of varieties, from generic “fresh office” to specific smells which mimic famous perfumes. After being eaten, they produce what the company call “exit aromas” — which are said to be as effective as air fresheners. A spokesman for the company, Dmitry Chistilin, told Metro about the product line. “We are creating a fart with a smell of Calvin Klein,” he said. “I ate (one) with an exit aroma ‘fresh office.’ It’s the same principle as air freshener. There are no digestive disorders after it and the candy works for about two hours.” The company is now attempting to patent the technology, he added. One pack of the candy will cost around US$3.25. The different aromas offered so far include Sensation, Clara, and Calvin Klein. There are plans to produce more than 35 smells in all. It’s not known when the candy will be available in Canada."
  10. For the most part Mike Harris did do what he said he would do... McGuinty on the other hand did pretty much the opposite of what he said that he would do. I think it does make a difference who you vote for.
  11. Centennial College, Ashtonbe Campus.
  12. Do you mean to the point that ever beach is safe every day of the year and people of all ages, including pregnant women, can eat unlimited quantities of any species of fish? Not in our lifetime, maybe not ever. However, Toronto does have many beaches that are deemed safe for swimming most days of the year. There is room for improvement. Separating storm sewers from drain sewage would be my number one priority. In some parts of the city they run through the same pipe with a trough to separate them. Heavy rains overwhelm the system and raw sewage ends up in the lake. This is slowly being rectified. Most fish from Lake Ontario are also deemed safe to eat. There are some limitations in terms of quantities consumed. This is a more difficult to solve than safe beaches. Concentrating on preventing more pollutants from entering the lake would be more feasible than cleaning up what is there. I don’t think that filtering the water to clean the lake would be feasible. Anything that can be filtered out or removed from the water can also drain out the St. Lawrence River. Pollutants such as mercury, which remain in the sediment on the lake bottom, will be a more difficult issue to resolve. Eliminating the source will prevent the problem from getting worse but will not remove what is already in the lake.
  13. Why would your luck change if you ate them everyday? You would have the same about of bad luck everyday. You would need to stop eating them for your luck to change.
  14. Actually deep water cooling has been in use in Toronto for several years already... too many years for McGuity to take credit for it ;-). AS for filtering the water used... the water that is pumped from the lake ends up as our tap water. Prior to making it to our taps it passes through a heat exchanger used to cool the water which is turn used to cool several downtown buildings.
  15. If you are interested in learning... I took a course on outboard motor repairs back in the 90's. In addition to learing about the motors you can also bring your motor in an work on it there; this is a great benefit because buying special tools for a repair costs more than taking it to a mechanic.
  16. I remember hearing about someone getting bit by a muskie on Julien Lake a few years back.
  17. Have you checked the plugs? I had a lack of power problem with my Suzuki which turned out to be a defective spark plug. If any of the plugs are wet after running the engine they are probably not firing.
  18. I have seen people use the plastic tie raps to secure steel pipes to roof racks to widen them. Large tie wraps should work for 2x4's or 2x2's. Just cut them off when you are done.
  19. I never though of that; maybe next time. Thanks for all the advice.
  20. My understanding is that marine batteries are better able to with stand the pounding that they get in a boat. I have never tried an automotive battery myself.
  21. Does anybody know a good place for parking near Buffalo airport? I would be looking for something along the lines for park'n'fly where I can leave the car for a week at a reasonable cost.
  22. I had glide slicks instead of carpet on my bunks for a year or two. I did notice that the hull plate was starting to gouge the glide slicks; there was an exposed edge at the transom. This wouldn't be an issue with a fibreglass boat and may not be an issue with a different aluminum boat.
  23. Thanks for the replies. It actually wasn't too difficult to fix. Definitely easier than replacing the whole unit; and about $200 plus taxes cheaper too. I did have a bit of a Homer Simpson moment though. There is a short piece of rope attached to the door to help pull it closed if you don't have an automatic opener. I usually keep it tied to the handle but it had come undone. I was just about to give up on trying to figure out why the door would reverse whenever it got to within about 8" of the ground when I realized that the rope was tripping the sensors... doh! The sensors do work. I think it had been running with chewed up gears for quite some time now. I always thought it made much more noise than it should. It is much quieter now that it has new gears. I am pretty sure that it is Chamberlain that manufactured the opener for Sears.
  24. Has anybody here ever replaced the drive and worm gears for a Craftsman garage door opener? Is there anything specific that I should be wary of? It looks like I am going to have to remove quite a bit in order to get the two gears out.
  25. Didn't the asian long horn beetle get to North America in skids? Lumber can spread insects too. I think kiln dried would be okay; but how do enforce that when the would is already cut into one foot lengths. I do my camping in Algonquin; I have always been told that I cannot have would from the GTA. Fire wood purchased from someone local to your camp site should be legal.
