home furnace and central air question, NF
Roe Bag replied to chris.brock's topic in General Discussion
Could just require a top up or recharge. Over time the refrigerant within the system can be gradually compressed. Guages will be required to asses the current levels. If it's an old system the refrigerant will very expensive. It will be freon and as it is being phased out the price has gone sky high. As for a 27 year old furnace, my biggest concern would be not if it will die, but when. You don't want to be stuck without heat in the dead of Winter. Currently there are grants available for upgrading to high efficiency equipment. They apply to both heating and air conditioning. I'd be taking a serious look if my unit was that old. Hope this helps. -
My previous boat was basically the same weight. Solo with all my gear it ran 23 mph with a 25 two stroke yamaha. Two guys and our gear and it fell of to about 20 mph. Three guys and our gear it was in the 17-18 mph range. An inexpensive tool in monitoring your rpm is the tiny tach. Cost about $60 and can be a big help in selecting the correct prop for your specific application. It is also an hour meter and can be useful in keeping track of 4 stroke oil change intervals. When the engine is running it indicates rpm. When the engine is stopped it shows the engine hours. A handy gadget! http://tinytach.com/tinytach.php

If you check any outboard manual they state that an outboard should be trailered in the upright or running position. If there is insufficient ground clearance between the bottom of the skeg and roadsurfaces, then the motor should be tilted and supported with a transom saver. The suspension travel on most trailer (unless overloaded with camping gear etc.) is limited by the distance of the top of the tires and the inside of the fenders. Usually ony about 4 inches. If you more than 4 inches of ground clearance there is no need to tilt the motor. And, no need for a transom saver. In all my years I have always trailered in the upright position. Never used a transom saver and never had an issue. With the advent of low slung trailers and monster motors, transom savers have become a must. For a 14' tinner with a 9.9 there really is no need. For added piece of mind, bolt the motor to the transom. That way if the thumb srews vibrate loose the motor can't go anywhere.

You can't harm an outboard running it within the WOT perameters. Standard props (supplied with the engine) are designed to keep you in that range. All outboards are designed to be run between 5000 and 6000 rpm. Exceeding 6000 will result in over reving and a blown powerhead. Below 5000, your engine is struggling. This can result in premature bearing wear, ring wear, or burned valves. If the boat suits your needs, then there it is no need to repower with a 25. A 25 at 3/4 throttle will probably burn more fuel than your 15 at full throttle. A 25 hp will not make your boat stand on end on takeoff. It will increase your top speed slightly. It will definitely increase your load carrying capabilities. Your 15 two stroke probably weighs under 100 lbs. A 25 two stroke weighs 114lbs. A 20 four stroke weighs 114 lbs. The 25 four stroke weighs 181 lbs. Extremely heavy. If you go with a 25 four stroke you should definitely have a 20 " transom. Been running two strokes wide open for over 50 years and never had a problem. Long before the advent of synthetic oils! Hope this helps.

Chucked my last pack of cigarettes on April 14, 1994. (wife's birtthday) Never had one since. Wasn't easy. Quit many many times before that. Can't imagine what it might be like to kick drugs or alcohol. Was all I could do to get off the smokes!

Dropshoting, marketing or real science behind it?
Roe Bag replied to Old Ironmaker's topic in General Discussion
Sinker. Two hooks. First one 8 inches up from bottom. Second 8 inches above that. Minnow on one hook. Worm on the other. Drop it over the side of the boat to the bottom and wait. Didn't matter if it was weed edges, weed pockets, shoals or holes. Started catching fish that way over fifty years ago. Dropshotting new or marketing? Refined a little but just marketing. -
If th thermostat is clear and you have a good stream all should be good. Happy motoring and good fishing too!
-
Time will tell. If it's a late model and thermostatically controlled you may still encounter problems. You may find your answer to: " Where did all those pieces go that i Didn't find?" Hope not! Just a heads up. Run it in the barrel for a while and see if all is good. My 25 Yamaha plugged up at the thermostat after a new impeller was installed.

A Ray of Sunshine, and hope for those who still suffer
Roe Bag replied to mercman's topic in General Discussion
You are lucky sir. Even more fortunate because you realize just how lucky you are. I watched alcohol kill my grandfather. Depression was the root of his troubles. He tried to deal it with booze. A viscious cycle that he could never break. You'll never know how much I wish he could have been the man "he should have been". Glad you made it back. -

You sir are an inspiration. Much more than just a "ray of sunshine". Congrats. -
Life time warranty against defects in materials and workmanship does not include accidents. I have two GL2 spinning rods. Jig and worm and a Dropshot. Well balanced. Light weight. Love the Dropshot. Nice soft tip for cranbaits, worm harnesses, trolling light lures, etc. My only complaint would be the handle configuration. The reel seats just feel awkward to me. I have fished many G. Loomis rods and I've only ever broken one. It was no fault of G. Loomis. Since the takeover by Shimano much has gone downhill. I've seen many Defects in wormanship. ie: blanks that aren't straight, guides not completely wrapped, wraps not completely covered with epoxy, guides that were not properly aligned etc. Bottom line is Shimano doesn't have the quality control that Garry Loomis had. They also need to take a step back and realize that haste makes waste.

Do you not think that a manufacturer (Fulton in this case) doesn't do their homework on "negligence, due diligence, qualified, expert, etc". If the risks were great, the product wouldn't be released to the general public. If installation was was such that a qualified expert was required, again, it would not be released to the general public.

I just purchased a complete package (boat motor and trailer) from Bay City Marine in Hamilton. They installed a Fulton kit (as shown) as part of my purchase. Rigged and ready to go out the door. Also listed in Cabelas. http://www.cabelas.com/product/Boating/Boating-Trailer-Accessories/Trailer-Couplers-Locks%7C/pc/104794380/c/104781780/sc/104642280/Bolt-On-Fold-Away8482-Hinge-Kits/701826.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Fboating-boating-trailer-accessories-trailer-couplers-locks%2F_%2FN-1100656%2FNs-CATEGORY_SEQ_104642280%3FWTz_l%3DSBC%253BMM%253Bcat104781780&WTz_l=SBC%3BMM%3Bcat104781780%3Bcat104642280

Perhaps, but it depends on the style of winch post. This is identical to my trailer except mine is galvanized. I borrowed this picture from a dealers site. My tongue jack is behind the winch post and the hinge is is where the jack is. This style of winch post adds considerably to the overall length. Beware because as I said, I have about 3 inches clearance at either end when I close the garage door. Centre line of my Lund 1600 is 16'2".
-
Think it's the Tracker debate Lew was referring too. Tracker vs Cracker.
-
Same here. 20' garage but the way the overhead door is recessed, it's actually 19'7". I just bought a brand new Lund 1600 Fury with a 40 4 stroke tiller. Swing tongue trailer. I have about 3 inches clearance at the front and 3 inches at the back. Just fits and that's it. Centre line of the 1600 Fury is 16'2". A 16 1/2' maybe but not a 17. The angle of the winch post can be a factor as well. Mine actually extends beyond the hinge in the swing tongue Hope this helps. Good luck in your search.

Hang on tight buddy. Those things lend new meaning to the words "Crotch Rocket". Crazy fast!!!!!!!!!

It's been a while but the last time I went it was so crowded you couldn't get a good look at the merchandise. Not sure about now but the best deals were always later on the last day of the show. Seems they would rather sell than have to pack it all up and take it home. If you establish a relationship with a local retailer he can usually order anything you want. If you deal with him often enough you'll start to see deals. At least, that's been my experience.

My buddy bought a Polar Kraft this year. No more horsepower rating. Instead. Maximum engine weight. 15' with a 15" transom. Maximum engine weight 125 lbs. His 25 Yamaha two stroke makes it just under the wire. A twenty five four would be roughly 30 lbs over weight.

My ski pole cost me a swim in the Saugeen. I was fighting a fish and turned to walk out toward the bank. Didn't realize it but it was tethered to my belt and dangling diagonally across my shins just below my knees. Feet got tangled up in it and down I went. Rod in the air with one hand and doin' the sidestroke with the other. Not a nice place to be. On the oher hand it has proved it's worth many times over on lots of other occasions. Don't leave home without it!
-
Didn't think that was possible. Two people with the same board name. Chronzey with a 14' tinner with a 20 or a 25 on it. Not likely. I see Darryl often on the Saugeen. We had mutual friends back in the 80's. We often rubbed elbows on several Ontario tribs way back when. Good guy in his own right. This thing with how everybody at the MNR is doing everything wrong. Imprinting. Fin clipping. Fish rearing. Stocking programs. Atlantic program. I've heard it all way too many times. Don't need to spend money. I'm sure I'll hear it all again the next time I run into him on the Saugeen. I give the guy credit. He's done a lot for the sport. Just heard the "same old same old" too many times. As far as the tube goes, I don't watch much of that either. It too is "same old same old". Here's a little brain teaser for you. I didn't realize it until I saw your post about winning the Caledonia Anglers and Hunters Derby but we went to school together. Can't remember if it was public school(Memorial) or high school. Maybe even both. 50's and 60's is a long time ago. Guess who???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Cronz????????? You got the wrong number buddy! As for the Straightline meeting, good luck with that. Got a belly full of Darryl years ago at the "Fishermans Evenings" he did for the Dofasco Fishing Club years ago. He had a great magazine and entertaining television show. As far as going out and spending money to listen to him rant, I'll pass thanks.
