Disappointing day on the tribs....only got one!!

We've never chased carp before, but would like to give it a try. As for keeping keeping a few...we have kept a few hens for fresh roe and a nice meal. CC's lessons came with a "how to prepare roe" section...LOL. I have to admit though, chasing steel is addicting!!! -
Scott....here's my open wound....would you mind putting some more salt in it for me?? thanks....LOL

Bly and I hit an eastern trib this morning. The banks were filled with anglers when we got there, so we decided to hit spots we had never fished before and nothing was happening....no hits, not a sniff of our roe, no interest in jigs, flies or pinkies either. Every two or three drifts, we had to knock ice off our lines and rod tips and when the wind blew thru it got verrryyy cold. Talk about frustrating, consdering the water looked perfect. In talking with a bunch of guys, it seemed no one was having a great day...guys only bringing in only 1 or 2. We met up with a new member of the board out there (Douger). He recognized us from the board. He's a great guy...just learning the steel trade like we are. We fished with him for a little while before he headed on home. Near the end of our outing, I finally landed this small hen. Bly made SURE we didn't lose this one....all decked out in her new waders (birthday present for her), she practically ran out there to net it....LOL. Turns out it's a good thing she did, cause when we went to remove the hook...it was already out. Closer inspection of the hook showed that it had broken off. So...overall results of the day... Me....1 for 1 Bly....0 for 2 Cold hands: 4 for 4 Cold feet: 4 for 4 Windburned faces 2 for 2 PS....I suppose someone could find out where we were from the fallen trees in the background....but....we had a crap day out there anyways....cant see anyone flocking to that spot....LOL

Nice intro bro-in-law! I gotta thank you for getting me into this steelheading thing....the first time I ever tried it was when you were up here. Now I cant stay off the tribs....LOL. Oh yeah...the reel you got me for Christmas rocks too....thanks again! Hope you get up here again...we'll get you that elusive steelhead you've been looking for.

Scott...bly and I went out today...and I caught the only fish. Carole is pretty upset at your comment....LOL. She had some hits, but was trying to get used to her new noodle rod. We'll get out there again...it seemed everyone we talked to where we were only got one or two as well. We gotta find us a new trib!!! LOL Great job as usual Scott...you really do make me sick though....haha

I use it all the time....I'm a shore fisherman as well. I use it mostly to chart depth and structure. It does find fish...tested it in a pool where I could see them at the bottom...both moving fish and stationary fish. You can turn off the fish ID to see the raw sonar returns if you want to. It's nice cause it has sensitivity settings as well. Overall, I was pretty amazed at how well it worked...esp given the price. I have a steel leader attached to it...I simply attach it to a swivel and let it fly! I haven't been brave enough to use it as a float....as advertised in the instructions....LOL. It's a pretty expensive toy to have break off if you hook a big fish....haha. Drawbacks....will not work well/at all in below freezing temps...so you cant use it for ice fishing unless you are in a heated hut. (I tried it in a heated hut...worked fine...and tried on the open ice...didn't work). The watch battery apparently runs out quickly (from other reviews), but I haven't had to change mine yet. My package came with an extra one. The watch isn't backlit, so you need to have a small flashlight handy if you are fishing in the dark. You cant change the battery in the castable part....but it's supposed to last a TON of hours. The cost is all in the watch and apparently you can buy replacement castable parts for around 20 bucks. Good luck with it! Cliff Overall...for the money, it's worth every penny. I'm sure you'll find it very useful in your shore adventures!

I think I'm gonna go fishing and NOT watch the game. My heart will not be able to take it if the Leafs lose....plus if I catch a fish or two, I'll feel better that the night wasn't a complete waste of time...LOL

Hmmm....my dad was an avid golfer. Loved it...played it every weekend...entered all kinds of tournaments. I didn't want to learn, but at age 8, he entered me into a tournament at a local golf course. An hour before tee off time I was being taught how to hold the club. Lucky me ended being the very first golfer off the first tee...the newspapers were there...it was crowded....I was extremely nervous. I shanked the shot...it went about 10 feet forwards and 30 feet left. I shot about a 180 that day....a nice man who was accompanying our foursome tried in vain to help me...even offered me free lessons....he felt sorry for me obviously...haha. I dont golf anymore.....LOL. It's for this reason I will not pressure my kids to the competitive side of this leisure activity. Fishing to me with my kids is more about the experiences and memories....sharing the laughs and smiles. If they want to compete, then I'll support them, but I will never push in this regard.

Pretty cool to see old footage like that!

Great work Scott! I knew if anyone could pull em out of high dirty water it would be you. Nice lookin hen in that first pic! Bly and I are gonna try our luck tomorrow...I know...may be packed out there, but I'm hoping the cold weather will keep many at home....LOL. BTW...your "tough day" would be a successful day in my books...LOL

Nice job out there! Gotta love how scrappy they are...nothing gets the adrenaline going more than seeing that float go down and then seeing it jump out of the water.
-
Happy Birthday!!! I hope you enjoy your day tomorrow. I'll take care of the little one and take her to and from school. You just relax and do whatever you want to. (why do I think you're heading out fishing?? ) I couldn't ask for a better fishing partner

Hey wait...you're going fishing without me when I'm at work? You cant use my noodle rod and reel anymore then.... Great job out there...you definitely deserved this one!!!

I agree with you on this point. If you have lots of time and have the luxury of being choosy, then by all means try to get a deal and lowball. When my wife and I were house hunting 5 years ago, we saw a bunch of houses that we'd have been happy in. We were mulling over putting offers in on a few of them when we saw the house we are in now. We LOVED the house and knew it. I told her that when we saw the right house for us we'd know it....as soon as we walked in and toured, we knew this was the house for us. The price was right and was just listed that same day. By 8pm that night, we put an offer in...the offer was exactly what they asked for and we agreed to all conditions. No other offers came in that day. By 11pm, I was signing the papers. End result, the owners were ticked at their agent cause we were the first to see the house and we offered what they were asking...they thought they should have asked for more. Their agent had to explain that the price was at market value and that they were actually lucky that someone came in at the offer price so quickly. Dont risk losing the house you REALLY want over 5 or 10 grand or wanting an extra 5 days closing time. Just my opinion... Congrats again! Cliff

Welcome to the board Shoreman! I too am a shore fisherman....and just recently took up chasing bows up tribs. You'll like this board...lots of great members here!
-
You may want to introduce yourself first...you will usually get better response on this board. On that note, I know nothing of Bluffy Lake, but welcome to the board!

Thanks Spiel! Interesting reads for sure! I read an update to the chemical spill...apparently dead fish are now covering the banks alongside the river. The Walleye/Perch article just confuses me. Walleye are open year round on Erie. I'm ok with reducing the total allowable catch, but why not close the season during spawning season....like they do on Lake Ontario? Maybe just an oversimplification, but it makes sense to me....LOL.

Rat with feathers...thats a good one!!!
-
LOL....Maybe I'll try it with my waders and report back on any drawbacks I find.... Full report later.
-
Congrats! House hunting can be fun and very stressful as well. Now that the decision has been made, you get to worry about the fun stuff! Good luck with the move....oh and BTW I think I'm busy that weekend....LOL.
-
Hey there Bryce. Welcome to the board! You'll find this board very informative and funny. By the way...I'm Bly's hubby....wait til you see her Walleye reports this fall.....LOL

Pike are open all year on Lake Erie...as well as the Niagara River upstream from Niagara Falls.
