When not tangling my line as a newbie steelheader, I play drums in an inide-rock band called Hostile Takeover. I collect vinyl records, and listen to country, bluegrass, folk, punk, funk, roots reggae, rocksteady reggae, dub and tons of rock and indie. I also love the outdoors (camping, canoeing, hiking, backpacking), and spending time with my family.

  1. I can see both sides. It's a good point about reducing traffic, thereby reducing accidents. On the other hand, BC's provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry recommends getting outside as a way get through this because it supports physical and mental health. I was out yesterday at an isolated river location. Felt great to be outdoors for a day and I didn't break any social distancing rules. The Humber river multi-use trail near my place is steady with people. On the weekends it can be challenge to maintain 2 metres.
  2. Thanks guys yeah I thought she did well and it gives her something to do to help reduce the crazy amounts of screen time that have been the result of social distancing.
  3. She's 12. The other day she asks me "Daddy can I try tying flies?" 😳 Yep!! My buddy graciously dropped his vice & supplies off on my doorstep and today she tied her first one. Wooly bugger, and well done! She wants to do more so I said I'd shop around for a vice etc. So if anyone thought they'd get into fly tying, but now their stuff is collecting dust in the basement, please PM. Adherence to social distancing/curbside pickup/e-transfer/etc.
  4. Thanks for the replies everyone. I was definitely as excited as her when the float went down. It'll be a good alternative this fall on the days the rivers are blown. I'll just head down decked out in all my steelhead gear.
  5. At 3 years old a kid can learn all the basics in and hour and a half at a simple place like Grenadier Pond in High Park. -respecting others' space -respecting the environment by cleaning up a little litter -watching the float -feeling the tug of a fish -wetting your hands before handling the fish -the importance of catch and release -having fun New Vocabulary -float -line -swivel -leader line -eye (of the hook) -rock bass -bait -sinker/split shot 2 rock bass in about and hour and a half. We had a totally great morning.
  6. My jacket from Cabela's was 17% duty. It may vary depending on the product, but I always bank on 17%. If it's an independent retailer, you may be able to get them to write "gift" on the green customs tag. This way they don't charge duty. I've had retailers do this before. And I second using USPS over UPS. The UPS brokerage fees they charge for clearing customs are significant.
  7. Going to take a couple of kids to Simcoe this spring for perch & rock bass. Ages 3 & 6. Both have never fished. I'm thinking 4'6" ultralight spinning rods ($19.99 at Cabela's) with spincast reels. Thoughts?? Is there a particular reel that's good? I obviously want to keep the price reasonable, but it has to be decent enough quality to do the job. Thanks
  8. I second both the Cabela's and the Simms. I have a pair of Simms G3 and love them. They may call them the G3 Guide now. A classic, widely used wader. I think I saw them for $300 at Bass Pro. Word is stay away from Bass Pro brand breatheables. Never owned a pair myself but they apparently are prone to leaking. Many guys speak highly of the Cabela's brand waders. If you are looking for neoprenes (good in cold weather but don't breathe), Cabela's have a great pair for US$129 in the waterfowl/hunting section. Cheers
  9. I'm planning a trip to the Sutton River and was wondering if there is another way to fly there other than out of Hearst. Their rate is $2400 and I was hoping there was something cheaper. (Well, flying to Tokyo is cheaper). Thanks.
  10. Braided line is also popular. I use PowerPro 40lb test (which has the diameter of regular 10 lb). I run a 12 lb. flourocarbon leader. For Cleo spoons, the 2/3 oz. or 3/4 oz. sizes work well too. Make sure your rod is rated for the line. A 10-17 lb is a popular size. Shimano Convergence is a great entry-level salmon rod ($70). A good time to fish is the last 2 hours before sunrise, but a lot of guys head out at night as well, say 11pm onward. Good Luck.
  11. congrtats, bly. looks like you had a great time. way to take advantage of some travelling to seek out some new waters. a true angler.
  12. Nice! Looks like I struck a nerve. Never had a problem with the fellas on generously proportioned.net. I've got tons of solid info and have never had a question go unanswered. The folks here are great as well. I guess some get a little ticked and cry snobbery when biologists post about recent research instead of blabbing about which has-been rock stars are playing which venues. Kidding. OFC is great.
  13. I haven't been able to connect at all to Generously Proportioned.net. Can't even get the main page to load. Just wondering if anyone else has had the same issue. Thanks.
