  1. Nice sounds like a super deal.I will look into going to fishing fanatics for my next set up I would like 7 or 8 weight to try for steelhead and throwing bigger flies for bass and pike. Hopefully that will be christmas time. First I need to master my 5 weight. hey so far mostly just in around town here in guelph. I have only done the grand once, but I plan to get out there more frequently this year. I have also gone to the credit. If you are ever looking for a fishing partner on the grand shoot me a message, I actually don't know too many guys that fly fish which is what got me looking for club. I have not had a chance to get to a meeting for the KW club mostly because we had our first baby in March and my evenings have been busy the first 6 weeks. Anyways they meet the 1st tuesday of every month in Kitchener and have a bunch of other activities for members & non-members including casting clinics and tutorials on the grand. They have a meeting tonight which I will likely again miss at 7:30. Here is a link to the website http://kwflyfishers.com/index.html $30 a year membership which seems reasonable. Can't wait to see the pictures of those browns! LOL and if she is angry now wait until you are married man! I use to have all kinds of time to fish but now I have an endless list of things that need to be done....
  2. I have a 2 piece triumph and am also new to fly fishing. Its a decent rod for the price wish mine was a 4 piece though for easier storage and transportation. I am still a terrible caster but it takes time, better than when I started. Anyways sounds like a great deal, I would have jumped on it myself had I seen such a deal available when I went to purchase my first set up. I initially did a group class 2 years ago before I was set up at Conestoga College which was taught by Ken Collins from Grandriver troutfitters, if you can get lessons through his business I highly recommend it. My only regret was at the time I didn't have the money to get myself going with fly fishing and lost alot of what i learned. But I plan to book at least 4 hrs with one of the guides there this year and improve on my casting. Also planning on joining KW Flyfishers, its another resource that looks promising for us newbies. Best of luck
  3. Not sure they charge HST on international flights. But I would check because you definitely can save on domestic flights after July 1 if you book today before the transition rules kick in tomorrow.
  4. I just checked the regs, you definitely can not use smelts as live bait but it made no mention of dead bait, so I don't know. Never fished with them myself, I just know they sell them a food basics.
  5. I noticed that they were out walking the dog through the woods the other night. I am going to bring an extra bag with me tonight and pick some.
  6. Food Basic's in Guelph has whole frozen smelts. Cheap like 3/bag. Yeah Mackeral could work well, really quite large though. Big bait big fish they say!
  7. Hey, If you can get a copy of Canadian Fly fisher magazine from July 2007. They did a feature on it. also try the following link. I believe she has an old article from the magazine on her blog. http://flyaddicts.com/flygal/ From what I remember out Belleville way is good.
  8. I wouldn't call it refreshing. I was fishing in the durham region quite high up my local stream (well its where I grew up and fished before moving away) and there were lots of steel stacked up in anything they could remotely find as "deep water". But the levels are far too low and I have never seen as many dead steelhead in the stream as this year. I am very concerned about the low water levels this year. I also don't like the whole shooting fish in a barrel mentality. One spot I did not fish was loaded with 10-20 people by 7:00pm friday night. Granted it was full fish but I don't see the fun in being shoulder to shoulder with miles of stream to fish and hammering these poor fish as its the only spot with any real depth. Anyways end of my rant. I still managed to get some nice fish, mostly on the smaller side. My real goal was browns, so I failed on that front. But it was still nice to get out on the river.
  9. Thank Spiel for the link as well as others. Found some interesting information. I know I am very picky myself on buying fish at the grocery store. Sometimes its hard to be omnivore!
  10. Hello, Having just read a snippet from macleans on fish farming. Aquaculture (fish farming) generated 2.1 Billion for the Canadian economy and thousands of jobs in 2007. http://www.macleans.ca/article.jsp?content=n233617425 I thought the topic could provide for interesting and hopefully reasonable debate on the pro's and con's of what is a relatively new industry. I personally have mixed feelings on these farms as it has been shown to have negative effects on wild fish, higher levels of mercury and other toxins. Anyways interested to hear peoples thoughts and hopefully its kept clean doesn't go down the tube and need to be locked by the mods.
  11. stocked pond fish seem to really like berkley trout bait.
  12. Hahaha. But seriously a good message, if everyone can pick up some trash this weekend it will truly help our streams. As for me I'm heading to the Durham region to fish way upstream for browns, specks and maybe the odd rainbow on the fly rod. Hope everyone has a great opener. One final word. RESPECT. It goes a long way.
  13. Give me Bob Cole over most. Although I do like Jimmy Hughson and Chris Cutherberson who use to do hockey night in canada late game. I think he is with TSN but often times they have Gord Miller and that boob McGuire doing games.
  14. That was a remarkable story. Glad it had a happy ending and luck was on your side.
  15. Some good advice here. Guys some stuff I have already been trying and some new stuff. Good to know that her slipping is part of her maturing and testing me similar to a teenager. She has never shown any aggression to me or 95% of the people she meets. But I have seen it on occassion and as was pointed out want to make sure its dealt with. I am meeting with trainer on Friday that is highly regarded with his work with german shepherds. In fact he does most of his work training dogs for the toronto police. Hopefully he will bring me to the next level with my training of her. I definitely need to be the pack leader and I need to be more firm for her sake. I also need to get my wife more on board. She is not nearly as patient as I am with training her.
  16. I love Lake Superior Provincial Park but Solo's brings up a good idea in Achray on the east side of Algonquin. I visited that end of the park last year and despite the rain and almost being capsized on the way back across Grand Lake. I absolutely loved it. The High falls area is a blast for kids, in fact a kids camp was there the same day we were and the kids loved every minute of it. Not to mention the Barron Canyon is a true marvel. Can't wait to head back one day soon.
  17. Thanks for the replies guys. I usually take her for an 1hr a day walking throughout the work week plus playtime and random sessions of training. As well as hikes, fishing. I realize she is a working dog and probably needs even more but I can only do as much as life allows. Her original training was clicker training where food and praise were highly utilized. I found this worked well when she was a puppy but less so as she matured. She knows the commands but sometimes chooses to disobey. Some issues which I didn't elaborate on but will now. She is very protective of the yard and barks at any squirrel, person, or sound when she outside. Originally she was good at stopping when directed and recalling to the house but in the last couple months she tends to ignore the command. On walks there are for whatever reason and this is the most worrying for me, certain people and dogs that she becomes aggressive with. She has never tried to bite another person or dog but she definitely aggressive and it obviously worries me that she may one day if I can't control her. Anyways thanks for the replies, I know it takes time and patience and a 1yr old dog is not fully mature. Hopefully we'll turn the corner soon.
  18. Hi, I have a 1 year old pure bred German Shepherd and I have gone through one puppy training program and have done as much as I can on my own but feel like she is still not where I want her to be in terms of discipline. Lets just say she has her issues and as a large dog I would like her to be better. Anyways I was wondering if anyone had any feedback on a good training instructors/places in and around the Guelph Area. I am currently looking at going to Olympus out in Orangeville and Brampton as they breed and train alot german shepherd. Any info/thoughts appreciated
  19. Hahaha, I actually have some at home but I have a new born
  20. Great story.
  21. Hard to believe that trout would exist in Rice lake? Perhaps some small feeder creeks that are cold water were included?
  22. I use powerpro for chucking spoons off piers for salmon and have so far been impressed. I actually thought it took a pretty good beating and never broke. I think I was using it 10lbs test (diamter). Its weird that it breaks near the reel for you. I would check that something is not damaging it on the reel or like others said the rod guides.
  23. Be sure to check your regulations book depending on the lake. The number of exception to the general rules in zone 15 is quite extensive.
  24. Really I thought it was the other way around. Or is it wear light colours like tan, whites, and grey. Avoid blacks, reds, yellows? Anyways enjoy the trip and post pictures. Algonquin is a favorite of mine. I wish I was heading there this year but it didn't work out.
