The Land Of Giant Walleye ~ Anjigaming Lake Fly In
Kingsalmon replied to solopaddler's topic in General Discussion
Amazing as always Mike! Glad you found the walleyes. I didn't have the time last week north of Nakina while chasing moose. Just caught enough for lunch a few times and back to hunting. Going to take my three boys up after school ends in June. -
Mike, aka Solopaddler, I see you're back, you posted today
Kingsalmon replied to chris.brock's topic in General Discussion
When I fished up there about fifteen years ago we did a day trip flight to Pine lake and we fished a 500m section of river between the lake and a large pond. When I rounded the last bend before the pond, I had to stop and convince myself of what I was seeing. Huge Brookies launching themselves out of the water eating flying bugs. I didn't have my flyrod but I had my flybox and tied on the largest bug I had. I cast it as far as I could and let it drift down the rapid into the pond. Brookies were launching themselves stupid trying to grab the fly. Eventually one would mouth it. Caught over 20 fish and 2 x 6 pounders and you heard them splash like a concrete block would. Awesome fun. Maybe next year again. Mike, did you not get any of the big sea-run fish? They're usually bigger than the resident 3 pounders. -
They do sell to the public. I've bought worms there in the past. Just call ahead to make sure they have some bulk worms on hand, because of this drought.

Dusey Lake Outpost ~ Journey To A Brook Trout Zoo
Kingsalmon replied to solopaddler's topic in General Discussion
As always, awesome report. My dad hunted on Dusey back in the early eighties and said that the lake was full of weeds, but nothing about the brookies. Probably because they close on the 15th of September. Thanks for getting the blood to boil again after one of your reports. Mike G. -
If the knob is not turning at all when the spool and axle are then it is not the clutch. If it was the clutch, the knob would be turning with the reel. Let me take a look at mine and I'll get back to you
-
Icefisherman, when you test your cannon can you describe what is happening. For example, you tighten the clutch knob as tight as you can, then what is happening when the downrigger is slipping? Ie is the knob and reel turning, or only the reel. I'll try to help you figure this out.
-
Cannon bodies are guaranteed for life. MAy be beneficial to call the service centre in North Bay and see if you can upgrade in lieu of repair. It may be worth a try!
-
Better to blow it up a couple hundred miles off shore than to have it break up on a beach somewhere. I don't see a big problem with this.
-
Those washers are wear parts and if you are using the knob to lower the cannonball they will wear out more quickly. Just buy 2 or 3 sets of part 40 and you'll be set and have a spare. No need to get part 41 as it looks fine. If you were to flip the washers they may work briefly but when they cut through your cannonball will drop a 1000ft a minute with no way to stop it . Don't do it! Hope this helped
-
If you take the knob off there is a hardened washer that I am sure has been eroded by the ball bearing mechanism used to tighten the clutch. Look up the part on the schematic available for your downrigger at fish307.com and call the service centre in NB or order online the part that you need. SHould not be very expensive.

I've been going to Jeff's on and off for over 15 years now. Jeff's a nice friendly guy and is always helpful. Their prices are really good compared to others around the lake. Its not a 5 star resort but it has nice clean cottages and everything you need for fishing in June. Hey by the way this spring is going, you are going to be able to swim on the awesome beach. Fishing wise, in a normal June, you could catch as many pickerel (walleye) as you want within sight of the resort. If this warm spring continues the pickerel will be on the mid lake humps that are 5-15 minutes away. Ask Jeff for the fishing hotspots at the time. He knows where they are. I'm pretty sure he'll chime in on this message as well. Have fun.

That would be the only way they could get over that first set of falls in town, hitchhiking on salmon or trout.

I spent a lot of time there at the dam when I went to school there in the 80's. I can tell you that I've never seen that many fish jumping at the same time even when 15000+ went thru the ladder. Makes you wonder how many get left behind that cannot find the ladder. I was sure that they would have blew out that dam since it is old, but with todays red tape, it is no surprise that it is still there. I'll bet that if they got rid of that dam, the runs would increase even more. It really serves no purpose because lampreys cannot get over the rapids and falls down at the town.

I hope you're right. But there a lot of crazy variables out there that can shut down the whole industry like it did four years ago. I hope this continues as I'd like to get caught up on all the debts from the last four years and then start to go fishing again!
-
Misfish, I hear you. There is no happy medium. We have a machine shop and the last four years have been brutally slow. Right now we are so busy we are behind that it causes me stress figuring who to screw the least in terms of delivery. Everybody wants everything in two/three weeks. We are booked four weeks out. In the end we take it and work evenings/weekends because you just never know when the work will dry up. I am pretty sure you guys are faced with the scenario as me not being able to hire anybody. Nobody wants to be a machinist anymore. Anyways, be happy that there is work, as there are no guarantees in what we do tomorrow. Hang in there!

One thing that comes to mind with this mild winter, is big 40lb+ chinooks that will cruising around lake Ontario. Believe it or not this is not a record winter yet. I heard on the news that 2000-2001 was milder than this one.

My father and I saw one while spring bear hunting about twenty years ago near Kaladar Ont. We initially thought it was a bear but then saw the faint brown lines down the length of its body and long tail. We watched it from the tree stand for about five minutes before it left. Unfortunately we did not have a camera but I could have taken him at any time. I knew that there was no season for them as they were fur bearing animals. This I knew because I just did my hunting course a couple week earlier.

Truck rear wheels lock up without applying brakes
Kingsalmon replied to GoneFishin's topic in General Discussion
I don't know, but that sounds more of a rear differential going than brakes. If you are not touching the brakes and the rears are locking up at the same time, I don't think its the brakes. Had an early 90's Jimmy that gave us the same problem. Turns out it was the rear differential bearings. KingSalmon -
Glad you made it back OK. Obviously you must have seen this happen before if you took precautions like that when you built the plane.

Even in NY they lower their limit to one steelhead in tributaries (LO tribs). If the MNR would lower the limit a lot of people wouldn't bother driving two/three hours for one fish.
-
Ask Aaron Shirley about that camera. I think he uses one and is somewhat associated with Kodak.

Some Personal Views on the Attawapiskat & James Bay.

Pictures are worth a thousand words, and you have a complete story there. Amazing! -
Me thinks this is going to be bad for the fans. If you think the Leafs ticket prices are too high to begin with, wait until next year. I'm sure their economists see that demand is far greater than supply and they are going to crank up the prices even more, and turning HNiC into Hockey Night on Sportsnet or TSN will make them even more money. Good thing I never was a hockey fan. I'd rather spend my money fishing!

Mine is the same. The fake one's been up for a couple of weeks and the fresh one will come soon. When I was a kid we were happy with one. I can't understand why you'd want more than one either.
