Braided line for sure!
I asked the same question a few years back and tested both braid and mono. I was much happier with braid for a couple reasons.
The main reason is that you wont stretch you line while untangling unavoidable birds nests. This menas you line will last long and will be in better shape to cast.
The second is that i foudn it easier to untangle. With braid you can often pull really hard and get a nest out, with mono you stretch the line again.
Another tip, dont fill the reel with line. This often can create more of a mess (although an experiences baitcast user will get great distance with more line, he may loose some accuaracy) I say fill the spool half way and practice.
And another thing, why does everyone compare bass fishing to pike fishing??? I dont use anything less then musky gear when I fish for pike.
