May 24 long weekend report..Walleye non stop!!
Homer Is King replied to tb4me's topic in General Discussion
Thanks for sharing your weekend! Looks like a great trip. Good job Dad, I feel you pride!! -
Great thread. I don't have any experience but I'm looking forward to the reply. I just picked up a trolling rod from BP. It's a Shiman TDR trolling rod - 9 ft medium. They sell for about $35 cdn. Seams like a good rod for the price. http://www.basspro.com/Shimano-TDR-Conventional-Rods/product/58573/-1115831 I have an Okuma line counter on it. I haven't had it out yet but I plan to use it to target lakers using dipsy divers but hope it will work for salmon too.

Great story. Thanks for sharing it. -
Thanks guys! We really enjoyed the weekend. I'd been to that park before but never realize how much it had to offer. Here's a few of the visitors that we had at our campsite. We had several families of ducks visit us as well as a Great Blue Heron, Bull frogs, and painted turtles. I even got in on the pan fish action That's as big as I could make it look. Out fished by my kids again!!!

My oldest daughter had a soccer tournament in Peterborough this weekend so we decided to make the most of it. We booked a camping spot in Beavermead Campground. It is in Beavermead park on Little Lake right in the heart of Peterborough. Beavermead Campground The park itself is a beautiful. It is open to the public (you don't have to camp to use it). It has a beach and a playground. It has several hiking, biking trails running through it including the Trans Canada Trail. There is a medium sized boat launch and lots of shore fishing opportunity (especially for panfish with the kids). Little lake is part of the Trent Severn waterway and lock 20 is a very short walk from the park. The beach. The boat launch. You have to go under the bridge to get to the lake. There's about 6 ft of clearance. The campground itself is average. The lots are long but narrow. Some of them would be very muddy with a little rain. Beavermead park is actually on an island and there is a small river that runs behind the park. This was one of the highlights. Our site was right on the river. There was lots of wildlife to watch and small panfish to catch (bluegil and perch). We explored the park a bit and found a great spot for rock bass and pumkinseeds. It was breakwall made of large rocks that went out to a shallow sandy flat. The rocks were full of rock bass and the flat had a large school of sunfish. It was easy fishing for the kids and we nailed 'em! Our lure of chose for pan fish is a 1/8 or 1/4 oz jib head with a 1" piece of worm. The jig head greatly reduces the amount of gut hooked fish compared to a plain hook. Even a small (5") sunfish can suck down a #2 aberdeen hook! This is especially true when fishing with kids. The can be slow on the hook set and the fish has lots of time to suck it down. We caught 40+ fish and all but one was hooked in the lip. All of the fish were in excellent shape. No wounds or damage and no sign of "Black Spot" parasites. Here is a nice rock bass my oldest caught. Notice the dark colours. Even the red eyes are black. This guy must be spawning. Here's another rockie. Here's a fat Pumkinseed. What beautiful colours. She was full of roe but still tight (none would come out when I gentle squeezed her). My 5 year old learned how to cast with a spinning reel on this trip. Excuse me as a wipe a tear of pride from my eye.... It ranks up there with taking the training wheels off! Here's my youngest. She wasn't going to be left out. Caught it herself and insisted on lipping it. And the release shot

Navionics Canadian Lakes App for smart phone?
Homer Is King replied to Black_Blade's topic in General Discussion
It's a great app for the price. I have it on my iPhone and love it. Well worth the ~$15! The GPS on you cell phone is not true GPS. Real GPS units use satellites to triangulate your location. Cell phone "GPS" uses cell towers to calculate your position. -

Looking for a camp near Lake Scugog?
Homer Is King replied to Live2fish85's topic in General Discussion
There is Goreski's Landing. It is right on Scugog. It is on the north side of the island. My linkhttp://www.parkbridge.ca/prop/cottagerv/goreskislanding/home.aspx Google Map We stayed there once a couple of years back. The transient sites are on the small side but they are right on the water (the channel for the park). The park has a couple heated pools that are nice and a small water park. It's not the best park but I would stay there again. Besides, it is the only one on Scugog. They also rent boats for an OK price or there is a boat launch right on site and you can tie up right next to your campsite. The kids fished non stop in the channel and hammered the pan fish! -
Great fish porn!! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks guys! Going out with the kids definitely cuts into "my" fishing time but I is well worth it. Getting them hooked now will pay off in the future! Plus I'm getting really good at undoing tangles! LOL!! Forgot to mention, everything was caught on a worm on a hook with a 4 lb flourocarbon leader.

Sunday May 22, 2011 - The day I lost my fishing partner
Homer Is King replied to fishnsled's topic in General Discussion
My condolences to you and your family. I can tell by how fondly he is remembered by his son that he was a good man. -
Good job Ron, way to dig in your heels! To clarify, (correct me if I'm wrong Ron): Ron's not fighting to be allowed to fish in the marina. There is a by-law that clearly states that you can not. It lists several areas in the Cobourg Harbour where fishing is not allowed. Ron was fishing in an area the is not listed in the by-law, the east pier. People have been chased off of this spot and not allowed to fish. Ron's arguing that it is not part of the by-law and people should be allowed to fish there. Google Map of Cobourg Pier

A Greasy, Crappie, "GAR"bage Report.

Great report! Some beauty fish! I love the gar. Most of use don't get to seen to many of them! -
We have a tradition on heading up to the father-in-laws for May 24. He has a chuck of land south of Owen Sound. We take our trailer and have a blast. Bon-fires, target shooting, ground hog hunting and FISHING! Where he lives is in the headwaters of the Saugeen River and there are small spring feed, gravel bottom creeks everywhere. I took the kids out several time for specs. At one time I had 7 kids (10 and under) spread out along the bank of a creek trying for specs! Not exactly the ideal conditions for these easily spooked fish but you do what you have to if you want to fish! Despite the complete lack of stealth we managed about 12 specs over the weekend. All were released except 2 that were badly hooked. They made a great little pan fried appetizer. I managed to up my PB for 6" to 6.75" My boy nailed this nice 7.5" spec. The biggest of the weekend. We found a couple of pools that were loaded with large minnows. I found out later that they were Chub. Most of them were Hornyhead Chub (te he he). In the chub pools the action was non stop and the kids loved it. We even nailed a couple of monsters! Here's the "trophy" chub of the weekend. A fat 9.75" Hornyhead chub. This spawning male lived up to it's name. He had 3 monster horns on each side of his head! Here's a couple more we landed It seamed that if the pool had a dark bottom it was full of chub. If you could see the gravel on the bottom it held specs. All in all a great weekend! It felt like summer. We came home tired, sun-burnt, bug bitten but we loved every minute!
