  1. A hammer because if you can't fix it with a hammer it must be an electrical problem.
  2. Living in the kawarthas, Iron and Sulpher are very common problems even in drilled wells. When we bought this place 11 years ago they had a system in place that used potasium permangenate (dangerous to have around and to handle). I got rid of that system and put in an air injection system with a holding tank. Looks much like a water softener but you never have to add salt or anything. It injects air into the water as it is coming into the house and the iron and sulpher percipate out and are trapped in the holding tank. The filter (I'm not sure what the filter media is)then back washes (at what ever it is set for) just like a water softener does. I believe installed, the system cost me about $1200.00 It has been 10 years now and the system is still working perfectly there is never a hint of iron or sulpher in our water and it use to be really bad, clothing would turn orange from the iron, and the smell of the sulpher in the water would almost make you afraid to use it. Hope this helps, it would be a lot less expensive than drilling a new well. Cliff
  3. Thanks Michael, So far everyont that has reported back on the NokOut has been very pleased with it. Got my first 8 point with a bow while using it a week ago. That is one beautiful buck you got there, were you hunting in a stand or on the ground? Was he chased to you or did you catch him moving between bedding down and heading out to feed?
  4. Well, I have had both Hummingbird and lowrance units, I currently own an HDS 5 and love it and I haven't had any problems with it other than messing up my settings a few times (my own fault). As for accuracy, I figure that if it can get me within 20 or 30' of where I want to be, that is pretty good, my boat is only 18.5' long so if the GPS can put me within a boat length or so I have no issues. I have checked it out for accuracy on several occasions and found that within 10' is normal (1/2) a boat length! As for speed, it seems to be pretty good but I haven't really had anything to really test it against. I do find that even when stoped it will fluctuate by .0 to .3 or .4 mph but when underway it seems to hold steady. I hope Hummingbird comes through for you, it would sure be good business on their part!
  5. I guess I have been very lucky as there isn't anything on your list that I haven't done yet. If I could have my dream trip though it would be for my son and I to fly into some remote upper scale camp c/w a chief, and guide. I would want the plane to pick us up at our dock here on Sturgeon Lake, fly us into wherever it is that we go and fly us back here when our trip was done. I would want us to have to do nothing but catch fish and eat fantastic meals for the time we were there! Nothing but first class all the way. Saddly I can't ever see that dream coming true, money and time just won't allow it but it's ok to dream sometimes. Why not, how many people dream of winning the lottery every week! Locally though; I'd like to go sauger fishing with Marc Thorp again, Fishmaster for cat fish, Lloyd for BOQ walleye, Bruce for smelts, CPH for Simco perch, the list is just too long LOL.
  6. I'll try to figure out how to get the pictures from my phone into here so I can post them but that will have to wait until tomorrow. I am dog tired!
  7. A few years back when I decided to take up bow hunting I decided I wanted the fastest, hardest hitting crossbow I could afford. The idea of deer running around in the bush with an arrow sticking out of it didn't appeal to me. I hunt for meat! After much research I decided on a Middleton. Made in Canada, guaranteed for life, (even if you dry fire it) rated for 375'/second but consistantly delivers 383. To top it all off, they have the best customer service of anyone I have delt with. I have never had a deer stay on its feet for more than 30 seconds after hitting it and you'd be amazed at the accuracy of these things. PM me if you want more information about why I think they are the best bow on the market. And no, I don't work for Middleton and I don't get anything for promoting their product LOL!
  8. Well, I still have the text messages on my phone if you'd like to see them and a picture I took with my phone of the dead deer a few minutes later so you can believe it or not but that's the way it happened LOL!
  9. Oh I've got one every year for the last five years but this was my biggest deer to date with my bow. It was text book perfect, I'd heard a squril going nuts about 15 minutes earlier and about 100 yards away in the bush so I knew something was around. My son and I were texting back and forth, I had just told him about letting the doe and fawn go by me. He had commented that I had lots of time now that I was retired. I joked back that sure I had lots of time, it was still an hour before case time. Then I heard what sounded like antlers on a dead cedar branch about 20 yards behind me in the swamp so I figured it was a buck and he was coming my way. Sure enough 10 minutes later he walked right out in front of me, put his head down right where the doe had been standing and that was the end of that. He had no idea that I was even in the area. I think he might have had other things on his mind The other thing was that I had just built this new stand. I had prefabed it in my garage then hauled it over to the farm set it up and re assembled it there. It is a big one, it will seat two big guys comfortably. My buddy had joked with me about having to take your boots off when you go in it because I had put carpet on the floor. It was one that I desigined myself, very heavy, very solid, and it worked out perfectly. As far as the hunt being over, I still have my anterless tag and my hunting buddy still has both his tags so I can get more bush time in if I want and I probably will. Shotgun opens here on Monday so I'll probably hunt a few days in there. Anyway, thanks for all the replies and yes Symon, I have the tenderloins and will save them for your visit LOL.
  10. The short version: I built a new deer stand over the last few weeks, pre fabed it in my garage then took it over to a friends farm to set it up. It took a bit of work but sits 12' off the ground (to the floor) and is a box stand. Got up in it at 2:30 this afternoon, about 4:00 pm a doe and fawn walk out, the fawn was too small to bother shooting and I figured that if I shot the doe the fawn would only end up dieing. 6:15 a nice 8 point buck walks right out in front of me broadside. He had no idea I was even in the area. 30 seconds later and he was dead on the ground. Dear hunting is so easy! LOL
  11. Symon, we didn't kidnap him, we adopted him! Thanks for posting the pictures! I have had the pleasere of fishing with a few professional guides on this board, all were fantastic and Lloyd sure didn't drop the ball either. I'd recommend him anytime!
  12. Well, being the stuborn old bugger that I am and being that Sue really liked her Kobo and had her heart set in the new Kobo Vox, I decided to give it one more try. Yesterday after leaving a message on their receptionests voice mail and not getting any response from her, I dialed the Toronto office number again but this time went into their directory by name. Since I didn't have a name to work with I just started entering random letters until the automated system gave me a name and told me to press star if this was the person I wanted to talk to. Good, now I had an idea of the format for their extension numbers! I just kept calling and entering extension numbers in sequense. It took several attempts but I finally got a person to answer the phone and after explaining my problem they forwarded me to a very nice young lady named Erin. Erin was very helpful, apologized for the problems we'd experienced and within a matter of about two minutes was able to confirm that yes they had in fact received our order and the unit would be shipped as soon as they could. She then sent me a very nice email confirming our conversation. Thank you Erin! I have now earned enough brownie points to go hunting or fishing just about anytime I want for the rest of this fall!
  13. Thanks, I'll keep that in mind, I'm kind of working on a limited budget so I'll have to see what my other options are as well. I was hoping to get some printer sheets of aluminum but so far I haven't been able to find any.
  14. There is a church on the site now but I'm not sure how long it has been there. It was also taken over by new managers about a year or so ago, very nice young man, Ben and he has made a lot of upgrades to the place. I was there last summer and it was beautiful and seemed to be very well run.
  15. Boy that looks like a real beauty, nice job! Where did you get the aluminum? I just finished building my new deer stand so the next project is an ice hut and I would like to use aluminum for the outside skin.
  16. Here is one that might be worth looking into, it is a beautiful place and they have a chaple right on the resort. Viamede
  17. Oh it just keeps getting better, I called head office this morning in Toronto, all I could get was a voice mail so I left a message outlining the situation and my number and asked for someone to call me back. That was 4 hours ago and still no call back. Nice to see a Canadian company that cares so much about their customers! I can tell you one thing, Sue will be getting a new Ereader for Christmas and it won't be a Kobo!
  18. Good to see you all getting out there and enjoying this beautiful fall weather with some nice fish thrown in as a bonus!
  19. Thanks! Pikeslayer and Lloyd took all the pictures, hopfully they will add them to the thread shortly.
  20. Well, it started out at 2:00 am last Friday, our much anticipated fishing trip with Lloyd of U & Me Fishing Charters which he had so kindly donated for the Fishing for Tyler fund raiser. Pikeslayer Jr. and I met up with John at the Fifth Wheel truck stop in Bowmanville about 3:40 am for breakfast (Simon would have joind us but got Bowmanville and Bellville mixed up and had already passed us by the time he realized the mistake). Introductions, a hearty breakfast and we were on our way to Picton shortly after 4:00. The trip down was pretty uneventful, but it was nice to have a chance to catch up on things with John. There isn't much traffic on the 401 at that time in the morning and we made really good time. We arrived at the dock in Picton at 6:00, it was cold and everything was covered in frost but Lloyd had the boat all warmed up for us so it was quite comfortable, he has a really nice set up there. More introductions, got our gear all stowed, Lloyd gave us a brief rundown of safety gear and where everything was located if it should be needed and away we went before the sun had even started to come up. It didn't take very long and it was "fish on". A large sheephead, boy can those things ever fight. Lloyd had told us before heading out that fishing had been really slow and that no one had been catching any numbers of walleye. We really didn't care, we were fishing, that is all that mattered. The fishing conditions weren't exactly perfect, very light winds, and bright sun, a nice day to be on the water but tough to get the walleye to bite, we were marking lots of fish but they seemed to have lock jaw. Lloyd kept working, changing lures, changing speed, changing depths. A couple of more sheepheads, a couple of missed hits then our first gold. A beautiful 7 lb walleye in the boat. Lloyd kept checking with the other charter boats but they weren't having any luck at all. As the sun got higher in the sky I kept thinking perhaps the wind would pick up a bit and give us a bit of a chop which would help, they had been forecasting winds of 15 k out of the NW. I don't think they had even reached 5K by lunch time. None the less, Lloyd's hard work was paying off and we were putting fish in the boat, more nice shephead and more gold mostly in around the 7 lb range. Alas, a fishing trip can't last forever and the day was done. We headed back to the dock with 5 beautiful walleye landed (I don't know how many sheephead) and everyone talking about what a wonderful time we'd had and how much we had learned from Lloyd. All in all it was a wonderful day, good friends, some nice fish in the boat and I learned a few new tricks from Lloyd that I am anxious to try here on Sturgeon Lake. Thanks Lloyd for your generous donation to the Fishing for Tyler auction without which I probably would never have had the chance to meet you and for a wonderful day on the water. I'll be back again!
  21. No, it hasn't gone through on our credit card, if it had, then I would consider it proof that they had received the order.
  22. Thanks Paul, I don't know much about them. Apparently the Kindle can't down load books from the library so I wasn't sure if any of the others could or not.
  23. Well, I just called Kobo's customer service again. I ended up talking to a very nice young lady who couldn't do anything to help me except escaliate it to Tier II. I explained that it had been escalated to tier II twice now and four days later we still didn't have an answer. (Tier II is supposed to respond within 24-48 hours) I then asked to speak to a supervisor, I was told that none were available. I asked to speak to someone in Canada, (Kobo is a Canadian Company) I was again told that no one was available. So there you go, try to buy Canadian and support our economy and this is what you get. Finally after a lot of searching I found a Toronto phone number for Kobo, I'll be calling them tomorrow morning. In the meantime Sue is going to check with the library and see if they support the Sony or any other Ereaders. Too bad, Sue loved her Kobo but this has really turned her off of dealing with the company.
  24. It sure is Lew, they have a wonderful product and Sue loves the fact that she can download books directly from the library for free right over the internet. She really appreciated the fact that if she had a problem or a question she could actually talk to someone that would help her and that she could understand. Saddly, her last comment was "if there was an alternative where she could down load the books from the library, she'd change". Unfortunatly as far as I can tell Kobo is the only manufacturer that offers that feature right now.
  25. I bought Sue a Kobo for Christmas last year and she loves it. About two weeks ago they came out with a new unit with a lot more features on it than the one she now has so I decided to get her the new one for this Christmas. They even have a deal on where if you owned one of the older units you'd get $10.00 off the new one if you ordered it before Oct. 28. That's when the fun started. We went on line and ordered the new one on Oct. 19 but never got a conformation from them that the order had been received so last week Sue tried to phone them. Their customer service has changed, what use to be fantastic customer services with polite knowledgable English speeking people has now been farmed out to India or somewhere. Sue did her best to try to communicate with the lady on the other end but got no where and ended up hanging up in frustration. Next Sue sent their customer support Dept. an email explaining her problem and her dissatisfaction at the new customer support system. She got an automated email back telling her that her question had now been upgraded to teir II support and someone would respond within 24-48 hours, that was 4 days ago and still no response. I have tried to find an alternate contact for Kobo on line without any success, every phone number I find ultimately leads me back to their off shore support team (for lack of a better description) and am hoping that someone on here either works for or knows someone that works for Kobo or can help me. Sue loves her Ereader but she sure isn't very pleased with their changes to customer service.
